I was a university professor for over 30 years(not at OSU). Looking at the congregation on this tape and others on you tube, I see very few students, i.e. 18-22 year olds. Most of them look like they are the parents or grandparents of students. Perhaps a lack of young people is part of the problem here???
The parishioners do not guide the Church. They are encouraged to be obedient to the gospel. When they are not they can reconcile through confession and penance. The bishop is right.
2:00 - 2:11 The bishop offers the Paulists the opportunity to stay and act as chaplains, as long as they "answer to the diocese." They decline the offer because they don't want to be obedient to the bishop. All priests are under the authority of their local bishop and/or religious superior. If the Paulists are refusing to recognize the legitimate authority of the bishop of the diocese in which they are ministering, they *should* leave in order to retain their integrity. Otherwise, they would just be lying about being in good standing in the local church.
Colleen, there is no reason for him to speak to members of the Newman Center. He is our Bishop, and he made it clear why he wanted to have diocesan priests at the Center. When the Paulists decided then did not want to be under the direction of the Bishop, they were making the decision to no longer minister at the Newman Center.

That he is surprised by the negative reaction of the parishioners, who he never even talked to (because he was scared of the bad publicity) prior to his decision. He may not be technically lying in a legal sense, but he is not being truthful.
It would be refreshing if he would just admit that he is trying to drive out more progressive elements in the Catholic church. It's not like there isn't a base of supporters for this kind of action. He is not honest about his intent.
That is why I Left this church! The Catholics are going back into mid evil times, you do as I say I am the church, when God says We together are the church.

The main issue here obviously is lack of obedience.

They were welcome to stay but didn't want to.
Extremely bad form for a priest to complain to the media about being moved. Imo that alone takes away a lot of the sympathy I might have had for them.
