    Just in case of any confusion:
    Trigonometry will tell us how tall a tree is.
    Treegonometry will tell us how far Splitsie can send a tree when he knocks it over.
    Dendrochronology is the science of dating tree rings to the date that growth occurred.
    Deadgrowthchronology is the science of dating trees to the episode in which Splitsie knocked them over.

      @@chrishoppner7875 LOL. So what's the study of how evolved with adaptive camouflage a forest has become in order to make it's trees invisible to him. He seems to be encountering more invisible trees lately.
      Conversely Splitsie mentioned his rover seemed a little wide but he was fine with that, which makes sense in terms of natural selection at work - wider vehicles seems like a reasonable hunter adaptation to counter such a prey defence. Not so much survival of the fittest as survival impossible of the fattest, perhaps?

    I usually turn off progression, because the game already has one, based on resources.
    My example:
    Tier 1 - You can only refine stone, restricted to blocks, that doesn't use cobalt and tubes, wind/solar power.
    Tier 2 - You have basic stuff, still no cobalt, rovers can be built. H2 powered stuff.
    Tier 3 - Cobalt era, you can refine most materials, first space missions. You fly everywhere. Still planet bound.
    Tier 4 - Platinum and uranium era, space travel, ion thrusters and jump drives (basically end-game).

      I also play with progression off. I less feel there is a progression tiers though. If you can start out near cobalt and iron you can go so fast through stuff up to refinery/assembler that the tiers 2/3/4 are more waiting then working steps.

    1. Build a Thing (usually a large ship)
    2. Use the Thing for its intended purpose
    3. Find out Thing is not very good at intended purpose
    4. Tear down Thing for its incompetence
    5. Goto 1 with some hopefully retained knowledge of why Thing didn't work so well

    I agree that progression is a pain...for experienced players. It's not a bad guide for beginners. I'm noting that you're in at the 2:00 mark and you already have an automated mining system. This means a geometric progression in your capabilities. To me, this is one of the issues in SE...you reach the top tier within a day of playing tops. After that, it's modded enemies and trying to build cool stuff. I think the game needs more at the low end and mid-game as well as better performance when ships get bigger and you go multiplayer.

    Hrm, you have a misunderstanding about ship welders there. They're not slow, they're *bloody fast*, they're ungodly fast. But they are, however, terrifyingly, horribly bulky. They just feel horrible to use for repairs if anything that isn't a drone-type ship you print out of them already because to repair something, like, say, Kanajashi's land carrier from his rover series, is impossible with ship welders.
    Removing the necessity to spend three hours fixing your complex ship after an engagement is part of the reason people like build & repair, because that just feels like grunt work (sometimes it's fun doing grunt work, sometimes it's not). But it'd take some... Work. Some work that I can't really see as fun myself at least, to make ship welders do that, since they'd need to be part of the ship.

    One of the reasons a lot of big servers use tiered thrusters is for the performance gain. Big ships require a lot of thrusters, lots of big ship require a LOT of thrusters overall, and each thruster has a performance hit. Tiered thrusters allow you to build a large ship with far fewer thrusters than would otherwise be required. In a single-player or small co-op PvE experience like your streams and games, I would agree that tiered thrusters aren't required. But on big PvE fleet warfare servers, they really help.

    • @MMuraseofSandvich
      @MMuraseofSandvich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rebaav For drills, you can right-click to use its secondary function, to dig a hole without spewing stone and ore bits. I'm thinking "grind to frame" would be a legit secondary action for the hand/ship grinder, hence the right-click.

    • @aetherbeetz
      @aetherbeetz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That could also work well with the hand welder and projectors: right-click to only pop in the frame. A lot of my large grid constructions that are built from projections involve a "turn on projector, pop in a layer by hand, turn off projector, weld up the layer with a welding ship, repeat" work flow to avoid missing blocks or popping in blocks that block others, and it can be frustrating to just pop in a frame for 1 plate rather than your whole stack of plates.

    Series idea... Rovers on Pertam, add enough AI opponents to spice it up. Teams of two with one rover each. They each get a basic shell to speed the start. The start is a common base where they may build up their rover or head out right away. Many check points, some AI hot zones, and the end is is not clear. PVE only, the AI will be hard enough, will they coop to fight the AI or not? BIG Kicker... the rovers are 4 5x5 wheels only, no thrusters. The team That hits all the checkpoints and returns first wins.

    The only progression I would like to see is a progression for your space suit. I think the ability to extend your energy, o2, h2, like maybe a tiered system for higher capacity tanks / upgradable sub systems for energy efficiency. At a certain point the suit restrictions really slow down being able to build or travel and it feels like you never get beyond that limitation no matter how far you have gone in the game.
    If you want to feel like you've progressed to a higher level then having the early game be more difficult based on consumable use would make that early game feel like much more of a hurdle to overcome, and once you've gotten the suit upgrades and tool upgrades you can really look back and see that difficulty change.
    On the other hand it might feel like my current state of affairs when I get some plat and then die. I either want to jet back and get my dropped pack with all my tools and weapons, or I just pick up a spare set of 'good' tools and weapons I created as backups and just continue about my business. The only resources that I feel like I have lost on a death is Uranium if I have some one me, or Plat and maybe those energy rechargers.

    I think I have a good idea to help with the penetration of Railguns: Concrete Armor.
    Concrete Armor would be very Heavy and brittle, anything bigger than a gatling would destroy the Concrete Armor in one hit, it would also be very susceptible to splash damage. However, Concrete Armor would stop all penetration, so a Heavy Railgun would kill one block and stop. Further this armor would be very heavy. You don’t want your ship covered in Concrete Armor, but it would be invaluable for protecting important components like ammo storage, Jump Drives, and Hydrogen Tanks.

    Hearing you talk about improved ship tools makes me wonder about grinders with an AOE so everything within the Aoe is disassembled rather than one item at a time....
    Perhaps instead of a "meaningful" energy draw make improved models require super conductors and other rare materials to build? Since a grinder is basically a motor with a blade attached having it take too much energy just makes me wonder where than energy comes from.
    As for welders I'd love to see them with a larger radius for improved 3d printing and higher penitration.... on the topic of welders I'd also love to see improved projections and ways to help ships repair themselves so players arent so afraid to have their ships damaged.
    The ai bot idea makes me think about super small grids and building mini drones that follow you around like gun or drill drones or maybe even a small repair bot!! Roomba charging stations x)

    @Flipsie this is why I loved Eve Online before it became a second job, they were actively making every ship usable.
    I’ve suggested this before, but a way to make the basic assembler more useable is if it could repair scrap components into good components. This would work a lot better if used in conjunction with the scrapped components mode.

    I think tiered stuff can work, if there is a story/lore/similar reason for it to exist. For example, if a minecraft mod has a tech progression from stone age -> bronze age -> iron age -> steam age -> electricity, then the tiered stuff is sorta required. A bronze sword is always going to be worse than a steel sword, but the bronze sword is needed because you cannot make the steel sword to begin with. BUT bronze remains useful throughout the progression, making bearings in the machines later on for example. It just needs to be thought through and make sense and not be frustrating.

    idea for a wrong way ___ type series - rather than a rover, have the large grid only allowed to have atmospheric thrusters for propulsion and never being able to touch the ground directly once it takes off - not even for resource gathering, which you'd either have to make drones/smaller vehicles for or do by hand
    also its max speed is artificially capped at around 25-30 m/s, and ASSERT attacks are restricted to flying vehicles only so they can actually reach you consistently, as well as having bases that are floating in midair around the elevation your flying base tends to stay around
    *maybe* it's allowed *one* downward-facing hydrogen thruster to help it stay airborne

    tier blocks make sense on a server because a lot of them allows you to use less blocks and get the same effect. tiered gyros,engines,solar.. if you can use 1 rocket per direction instead of 4 thats a lot of blocks the server doesn't have to keep track of. there is a hangar mod a lot of servers use as well that just stores your ships when you aren't using them and that also saves on server processing. so for that reason I like tiered blocks.

  • @dennislindemann9057

    Regarding the progression discussion:
    1) Progression in the game is helpful to beginners as it prevents them from setting their sights too high until they have basic infrastructure established.
    2) The progression provided by KEEN is not burdensome and easily achieved.
    3) SE has an enormous modding community. If you don't like the vanilla progression, you can likely find an acceptable and even enjoyable mod that adds progression to your taste.
    4) The Industrial Overhaul mod (I/O) and its ancillary submods adds complexity and progression. The assembling bench is awkward and slow, but is simple, easy to construct, and will allow a step up in production ability/speed from the survival kit. Every other block in the mod has a unique use. The smelter (basic refinery) does not become obsolete, since the ores it smelts are different from the ores the refinery refines. The fabricator (basic assembler) does not become obsolete, because no other machines can make the components it makes. The mod changes the stats of blocks to allow you to choose how to optimize your constructions. A few examples: H2 thrusters are weak, but rocket thrusters are 10 times more powerful, but require rocket fuel, which requires refining oil. The four tiers of armor blocks (aluminum, light armor, heavy armor, and composite) each have a different component cost, weight, and durability. Many players despise the I/O mod because they see it as adding unnecessary complexity but if you just want to skip the whole "build machines to make parts" and get on with base building and ship building and shooting the other guy, then why aren't you playing in creative mode? The mod definitely has its drawbacks like needing components to make other components but machines cannot draw from their own production inventory) and figuring out which machine to build in which order, but hey, this is a game about playing creatively with building blocks.
    Regarding tool progression:
    1) Hand tool progression acts like a reward for the hard work getting the required materials.
    2) Ship tools should have progression (like in I/O), like expanding speed and effective radius.
    Weather:
    Lightning targeting the player and striking underground or through grids is bad. Weather effects inside sealed structures or underground is bad.

    Your view on things like Build and Repair I can understand. I like to limit myself to one or two and I won't use them as weapons (they are OP for that), I wouldn't mind if they changed to only work on static grids.
    I like to build big, last big playthrough I did was with Kanajashi's current season setup. I decided no static grids but build a ship that housed a machine for each component, with industrial overhaul (copper wire, gold wire, girder, steel plate, everything) each was setup with the queue system mod he had to make only one thing the ship ended up being the length of two build and repair fields (600m I think?) and wide enough to allow for some spacing in between with 5 large hydrogen engines across the back. there were points that due to gyros (added mod for bigger so I didn't have hundred of them) and hull I was setting it up to make batches of 20,000 steel plates each on 4 or 5 presses at a time. with that scale and building as I moved an arm would not have been feasible without tearing it down and remaking it over and over just to build. then as brought up repairing would have been a nightmare due to not having space to move around a flying welder unless I had gone even bigger or hand welding everything inside the hull.
    Even just building the ship I had hours of time just waiting on components to be built where I would just fire it up, sit in a seat, and let it go while watching an episode of Wrong Way Up.
    Yes in vanilla I could have used multiple assemblers with speed upgrades, but the fact that in IO machines will not use things in the output to make an input causes massive issues for some parts like MOTORS (so much time waiting on motors only to find out that the system was locked up with the magnet in the output so it couldn't use it to make the motor). Even in vanilla imagine welding a hull of a ship that is something like 30 tall, 240 long and 30 wide with the sides 3 thick (2 of the layers were floatation cells for my ship). that is 7,200 for the top and bottom, plus 21,600 for each side. 57,600 armor blocks, light need 20 steel plate each so 1,152,000 steel plate, or 3,456,000 L worth of components (for comparison that is 8.2 large grid large cargo containers). I'll admit I was lazy and converted that to a rectangle for these numbers.

    Regarding ship grinders:
    Reduce the imparted force,
    Retrieves battery components, instead of trashing them like hand grinders do,
    Small grid should be as fast as a top tier hand grinder,
    Large grid should have some kind of upgrade module like a grav draw upgrade slot that pulls in nearby vehicles that lack thrusters.
    Edit:
    Potential upgrade blocks should be about a half block in size.
    Grav draw, gently pulls stuff towards you, can hoover up parts (intended for collectors(?), drills)
    Speed, more power, more stuff (intended for welders, grinders)
    Penetrative, more range on welders, grinders, and drills
    Power save, reduced effectiveness for less power
    Large blocks have 4 upgrade connections, small blocks 2

    My thoughts on the progression system is that it makes a good "tutorial" for the game. Experienced players will know what blocks to use with their builds. However, new players may need some guidance with this, and I think that the progression system is a good use for this. I also think that there should be an option to disable progression by default on new worlds, either by reaching a certain progression level (e.g. building Ion Thrusters) or from the main screen options menu.

    • @Flipsie

      It's not horrible but I do wish it was more integral to the game as in not having cobalt gates you to certain blocks, once you refine some then others get revealed in your G menu. That way it would be tied in more concretely to what you're doing rather than some of the arbitrary chains that are there.

    • @thomasbutterworth5222
      @thomasbutterworth5222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is another aspect of mods like Tiered Tools, Tiered Engines etc. If you want to design a ship in vanilla SE that is larger than a few hundred thousand kg you have to have so many thrusters designs start to look like flying engine blobs. Consider it like this: You only have access to jet engines from a lear jet but want to build a 747.

    • @Flipsie
      @Flipsie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My counter argument would be to just modify the basic block to have more power, why do you need tiered anything other than to extend the Skinner box element?

    • @unfluffydave8798
      @unfluffydave8798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flipsie that would be the best approach IF we had more throttle control. As it is now manual thrust is either 0% or 100%, increasing the thruster block power when lightweight or small ships are involved is going to be explosive at best if the slightest thrust forward takes you to 100 m/s in less than a second. Imagine trying to dock some of those aircraft in WWD using thrusters rather than manoeuvering on the ground with wheels. Keen need to have a good look and update the control systems, heck we havn't even got decent joystick support in a game that involves a lot of flying vehicles. If we had variable throttles we could increase the power of engines tenfold (with a matched increase in fuel/power use) and they would still be usable on a wider range of designs. Using overrides helps a bit but not much for precision.

  • @dblaikie
    @dblaikie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Re: Hand Tools V blocks: I could see that going either way: If hand tools are faster than block equivalents, then there's a tradeoff of "I can do that slower, but without my involvement - so I can go and do other things/increase my total output, but if I want something done ASAP it's still better to do it by hand" or "blocks need to be faster because they immobile/limited compared to doing it yourself". But either way, as you say, there are tradeoffs.

    Very cool to have the stream recording available on YT since Twitch has become... annoying at best. W4sted's perspective in the last WWU stream was very fun to watch, though.
    Progression feels like an odd solution to a design problem from the early version of the game-- it's _a_ way to motivate players to continue playing, it's probably one of the better ways to do it in the SE open world framework, but it's not a very good one. I'm fine with it, I'll just weld up the prereq block with a ship part way, then finish with the hand welder (because it _has_ to be the hand welder... I know why, but it always feels a little silly). I feel like the rarity of certain materials (used to be platinum, currently it's uranium) was enough of a motivation, I dunno.
    I also think that this progression mechanic fits certain play styles better than others. I tend to play games to relax and chill, and "important decision here" feels a bit like the real life I'm avoiding while playing games (granted, the in-game decision is always easier, and I remind myself that the game is only playing with numbers).
    If there's a SE2 in the works, I really want a graphics engine that can render the game reasonably attractively and doesn't turn my computer into a jet engine. I'm hoping the Deck will play SE reasonably well, but I'll keep my expectations low.
    I think you can do a blind let's play series of the Homeworld series. I've used the BGM from the first mission for every sci-fi game including SE.

    This is a bit counterintuitive, but it's not really more stable to mount the piston to the rover in the middle, because the mounting point isn't what really matters. What matters is the overall centre of mass. Suppose the objective is to have "at least one piston-length of reach past the rear of the rover". To do this, at least one piston must hang off the back of the rover regardless of where it mounts from. Whether that means three horizontal pistons extending from a middle mount, or one extending from a rear mount, the same amount of mass will be extending past the wheels. Mounting from the middle just means more pistons, which means less overall stability and higher complexity.
    Of course there's some weight to the vertical component of the mining arm, but the pistons themselves, at

    @Splitsie There is one BIG reason why ship grinders are not more powerful and that is because of balance in warfare. If the grinders were more powerful than it would create a new meta of just having grinders at the front of ships or creating grinder missiles. Grinders would become the new weapon of choice if they could just cut through things like butter. This is also true in reverse for grid welders. If the welders were faster, then they could be used to make insta-repair ships where they could repair themselves so quickly that they negate all damage.

    I wouldn't mind some tierd thrusters in SE.. but like refinery makes iron, for iron plates for standard thrusters.. and then you need iron to build the arc furnace to make steel, which takes longer and more resourced to produce steel plates for a bigger better thruster.. etc.. lock the advanced rotors and things like that behind steel plates. progression is good in most games, and keeps newer players from being overwhelmed by the ammounts of blocks available.. but the way SE did it, where you just build a couple blocks and have most of them unlocked from the beginning.. doesn't make much sense.

    I agree with the tiered item sentiment, it leads to artificial longevity and longevity of a given playthrough. I find the presence of heavy armor v light armor to be more genuine unlike in games like ark or Conan exiles where you end up swapping your wood wall to stone or in rust your stone walls to metal and so on with no consequences. In space engineers you get better protection from heavy armor BUT at the cost of more materials and a heavier less menuverable vehicle.

    1. For some reason I'm terrified of causing a CLANG explosion with a repair rig. I really need to master blueprints in this game.
    2. There was a Repair Bots mechanic in Homeworld Cataclysm/Emergence, although TBH it felt like a bit of a half-baked solution to the problem of having to hunt down your heavy warships with repair corvettes (better idea would be like StarCraft 2's SCV auto repair).
    3. Yeah, I feel like a personal bot (like Dyson Sphere Program) would be a reasonable solution to the build/repair tedium and introduce a possible upgrade/tech tree path for the game. At first your bot is slow, consumes H2, has a limited search radius for components, and you only get one. In late game, your bot has pretty good acceleration (though obv no jump drive shenanigans), uses ion/atmo thrusters powered by uranium in an RTG, is equipped with tier 3 tools, will defend you from enemies, is only limited by antenna range on your stations and ships, and you get 3 of them.
