    When he drops the first Canary onto the connector and says "It works!" I'm hearing Doc Brown from the past seeing the Flux Capacitor work "IT WORKS, IT WORKS, I finally build something that works" I know, I know, Splitsie has a much better invention completion record than Doc, but it's what I hear :D

    Love the new printer!
    The angle to each of the canary parking spots is more or less fixed by the angle the projector assembly to the individual spot. So if you wanted to, you could replace the hinges in the floor with rotors that could then rotate the freshly printed canaries to face directly out of the hangar door instead of a wonky angle.
    Although, part of me also wants to recommend putting in a rotisserie there for when your birds are finished cooking.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, replacing them with rotors seems like a good idea 🙂

    • @marcusdirk
      @marcusdirk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now, what would be the most dramatic shot for that: all simultaneously swivelling to face front, or doing it in sequence?

  • @edelmiroschnackaragon9296
    @edelmiroschnackaragon9296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you replace the hinges for advanced rotors you could set it up so it corrects the orientation automatically when you lock each Canary!
    Great episode, it made me want to play Space Engineers! Maybe some of this days =)

    • @ryan_rands
      @ryan_rands 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, since the printer arm is already on a rotor, you could have used the rotor offset to move the printer arm up and down to match the height of the connectors.

    First, THANK YOU for continuing this series. Survival Impossible was the first "Splitsie" video I stumbled across when I got into SE almost a year ago, and I binged it for weeks, until it just stopped... Have been satisfying my Splitsie (and now, Capac) addiction with Wrong Way Up and others, but have been praying you would continue it someday.
    That aside, if you replace the hinge under each Canary Connector with an adv. rotor, you could spin the Canary to face directly outwards after it's connected...

  • @Its_just_Dave.

    I’m so glad you came back to this series. All the work you have done on this base is phenomenal. The improvements you’ve made are great. One suggestion to improve the canary parking, replace the hinge with rotor. Another idea would be to put the merge block that’s on your piston arm onto a rotor. I love the time lapses you put at the end also. You truly do a great job at what you do. The way you explain things so others can implement into their games rather than just building and keeping information to yourself. Keep up the awesome work.

    This is hands down my favorite scenario, played by my favorite SE player (with MadMavn and co. a surprisingly close second) I am so glad SI is back Splitsie. I love all your shenanigans, but this series is like a waypoint. Something I look at as a thing to keep me grounded. While it's here, I can look back on all that has happened since it started. Playing episode one, takes me back to a different time.
    Since it started I've gotten my career off the ground, after 10 years of pouring blood, sweat and tears into it, I've gotten married to a woman somehow patient and kind enough to have me. I've moved cross country, at the request of my company, moved back to my home state. Now, my wife is pregnant, with twins. I know it's silly to relate it all back to this series of TH-cam videos, but I can't help but be taken back through it all when I hear "g'day and welcome back for some more Survival Impossible!"
    Thanks Splitsie, for doing what you do :).

    What if, to diconnect the forts from the printer, you have a little small grid fixed gatling gun aimed at the little connecting plate, and on the opposite wall you have an armour block of some kind with a welder. Taking inspiration from your... creative problem solving with the hand rifle last episode.
    And that way it can be automated with timer blocks!
    A fittingly violent engineering solution for an evil looking monolithic build >:D

  • @DecPlays_
    @DecPlays_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great episode and engineering. For the Fighter Canary building piston arrangement I feel like a hinge (just before the merge block (turning left/right)) would be useful on the end of the arm so that when you line up each Canary with it's connector you rotate to the left so that the Canary front is perpendicular to the hangar opening rather than somewhat facing the wall. The would allow more flexibility to launch from either side of the hangar too. Smashing!

    An idea: create a local storage to your fighter printer, that requests enough materials for between 1 and 3 fighters. this serves a double purpose, first so you can print quickly if necessary, second so if the connection between is severed, you know you still have enough to print a few.

    Hmm... the new printer system is probably less likely to spontaneously disassemble itself, but there's something about a giant tool arm that I really like.
    Having the welder on an arm makes the system more flexible, in that you can use it to weld/repair pretty much anything within reach _including_ the hangar building itself.
    This obviously doesn't mean that "you're doing it wrong", just that I have a preference for versatile systems.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It may have been more versatile but it was insanely slow to use, and this system should be able to print anything that fits inside a 2x3x2 large grid area so it's still pretty versatile :)

    • @patrikhjorth3291
      @patrikhjorth3291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Splitsie I know :-)
      As a _printing_ device, this is certainly the better choice, I'm not even questioning that.
      I just think it would _look_ cool, and maybe be useful, to have a general purpose robot arm in a hangar for repair and maintenance.
      Not that repair and maintenance is going to be a priority with the Canary Mk 2 class drones anyway, given their disposable nature.

  • @Cyberguy42
    @Cyberguy42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Scripts can access the projector to find out how many blocks are left, but there is currently no way to tell the difference between an incomplete armor block and a fully welded one (the same applies to all blocks that don't show up in the grid terminal system)

    • @DFPercush
      @DFPercush 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IIRC, the CubeGrid member of a block lets you query a damage/completeness value for blocks on the grid tree given its local coordinates in the grid. You just have to identify which subgrid is the one being printed.Since he's using merge blocks it's probably the same as the projector.

  • @AngryDuck79
    @AngryDuck79 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:00 I know it's early in the video and I know you have probably already done whatever you're going to do but when it comes to antennas on large grids, I almost always use a rotor or hinge to create a "computer bank" of small grid blocks for the build, including timers and programable blocks and, of course, with a beacon and an antenna. I don't think small grid antennas have any disadvantages when compared to large grid antennas. They have less power need and a smaller space footprint, and have the same range, so I haven't run into a situation where I'd need a large grid antenna because despite being on a subgrid it still connects through to the console and as a relay.
    1:20 Nevermind.
    8:20 A better method I've found is to turn off dampers instead of the whole thruster group, mostly because the hotkey is outside of the hotbar, and it means you can easily reactivate them after disconnecting.

    13:33 I really like the overall design of the Canaries, as a light combat drone. And the slotted metal plates around the front are a very good bit of texture. Makes me wish there was a skin that was specifically slotted plates, so you wouldn't have to add extra greebles or get lucky with grid coordinates for that sort of visual effect. I use a lot of battered plate in my designs and often the best solution I can come up with for texturing things that way is to stick some retrofuture panels or corner bits down, and just hope the metallic effect blends in from a distance.

  • @armastat
    @armastat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You know, with all your cockpit contraptions. what we really need is a mod which places a camera output onto an LCD panel. So you can stay in cockpit view and just look onto a display to see a camera overhead to the projection pit. I think I saw one at one point.
    On the other hand if we had one which did something simple like taking the distance between two objects (we know the sensor does this) and allows you to push that number to a simple display routine which moves an icon across a LCD display. IE., A box (representing the crane load) and a line (illustrating the back wall)

    One thing that might make small subgrid connectors safer if the don't need to move is to mag plate them to the large grid so they can't go crazy when you doc to them. Won't help your Ft. Capac situation, but can make your Canary dock less dangerous to park at.

    I’m actually staying awake to watch this…
    Regarding the reverse thrusters on a second hot bar: I cultivated the habit of having a launch/park hot bar and an in-flight hot bar. I started doing this when I accidentally toggled half my batteries in-flight (upgraded power, but didn’t upgrade the battery group) and accidentally toggling all thrusters while in-flight. Battery, thrusters, connector toggles on 0; reverse, ore detector, cameras, ship tools/weapons, etc on 1 or higher. Then it’s just ^0: 3, 2, 1 Launch; return: ^0: 1, 2, 3 safe to get out.

    About your drone fac. I think you ought to put three connectors on each side of your printing arm instead of four on one side. You might need to extend your hangar a bit to allow that.
    I would consider making some changes to your canarie design to improve it.
    - The merge block might be better placed ocming out horizontally instead of vertically though that might mean changing the tail feathers.
    - A more substantial change would be the connector since it looks like Keen is finally changing the small grid ejector into a connector (see the ore delivery drone teaser). To futureproof your design you could consider adding your ejector-to-connector mod to the game for a few weeks to allow the canarie to have that option early. This would also allow changes to some of your other vehicles. to remove rotor head recharging. To overcomplicate things you could even consider building one or more small grid small refueling/ore unloading arms at your base.
    - A last canarie change, in conjunction with the connector change, would be to add three or four mag plates to the underside. These should allow it to land on a large grid connector without klanging or selfdestructing. The game will allow small connectors to connect to connectors at about a half (small grid) block's distance.
    One last thought about the fort printer. Why don't you use a merge block to link that to the projector? That way you could remotely detach them from the Panini and only have to get near them to load ammo, which you could even do after delivery.

    Here is me after watching all 75 episodes of Survival Impossible that Splitsie will make some new episode with that "plenty more to come" soon(tm). Luckily he has more SE content to watch
    Ideas for future episodes:
    1. Repurpose the Gufy into a cargo hauler, so that the Rock Lobster can remain at "Steve's Hole in the Wall";
    2. Build aerial personal transport vehicles and place them at the main base, the Nickel mine (Reggie's retreat), and "Steve's Hole in the Wall". You can use these to fly to the other parts of the base. Then use AI blocks to automatically return the transport to the start point. This has the added benefit that when you die(tm) you don't have to run back from the Nickel mine to the main base but you have an aerial transport vehicle there so you can fly back.

    You can use timer blocks to turn off thrusters and park at the same time (or put batteries on recharge, tanks on stockpile etc.), that way you don't have to remember to do it every time.
    Also, those pistons look great!

      Personally, I prefer to use a custom script for that. Rather than 'lock connector and turn off thrusters', you can have 'attempt to lock connector; if locked, turn off thrusters', it makes things safer.

    odd suggestion to consider the "spatula?" at end of arm that hold the ship. put a hinge at each end and run them in opposite directions. they will maintain level and lower the drone.

    Wasn't there a trailer planned for the Rock Lobster? Would be better to leave the Lobster in the Mine location and have a Armored cargo truck to transport all the mined materials!

    Having a sensor to turn the welders off is safe, but it doesnt really fit in with the theme of awesomely over complicating the heck out of everything. OSHA says you need railings that lie horizontal so an engineer can enter the building but are vertical preventing access to the building while the welders and projector rig are active :) Warning lights and LCDs that change text when active too :D

    sounds like a fun plan coming up with the combat. After that I'm craving for you to go out revisit the asteroid base and find silver and uranium. Maybe you would have to set up the asteroid base as a refueling depot as well with some trips out to get ice from the asteroids.

    I would suggest to add hinge just before small merge block, so you could swipe left/right Cannary after printing. That way it will be easier to quickly use it from connector.

    Put a self destruct sequence into your drones. Set it up for up to 5minutes after launch unless aborted. Just in case an antenna gets destroyed or you use them for cover and escape with larger ships, this way you have no loose grids dragging on the server

    yay, si!
    btw you can show the details (from the terminal) with AutomaticLCDs which for projector will show unbuilt blocks :)
    (steam doesn't do anchor links, but it's in the guide and super simple)
    DetailsX variant can be used to skip first line which should be the "Type: " line
    DetailsNoN variant hides the names of blocks. (can also be used as DetailsNoNX)

    So, I have a pretty interesting thing to say about about the autocannons and assault cannons. The autocannons do more damage per shot than the gatlings ofc, and, I'm pretty sure they're more accurate, but their slower fire rate is not so desirable, but apparently, if you add a bunch of them they start to fire off sync and so you get a pretty high rate of fire, it chews through Assert bases like it's nothing.
    And for the assault cannon... it's powerful and it's got longer range, but, since it has to reload between shots, there's a lot of time that the enemy spends not being shot. Which is not good, gives them more chance to do damage. The solution I found was Whip's weapon salvo script. It will fire the guns on a salvo group in sequence, instead of all at once. I've made a custom turret with 6 autocannons, using that script. the result was amazing, the potential a continuously firing assault cannon turret has is immense.
    Whip's salvo script also works with rocket launchers, artillery cannons, and the railgun if you add custom firing delay to account for the reload. it doesn't work with the autocannons and gatlings but thankfully they don't need the script. It will also work with modded guns but it's not guaranteed and you may have to adjust stuff by yourself, but, overall, really nice script.
    On my current playthrough, I've bought the Cursor fighter at a station, and modified it to be a weapon to surpass metal gear. I removed the four gatlings, added small conveyors where they were so i could add even more guns, and added a whopping TWELVE autocannons, and an assault cannon instead of the rocket launcher, right below the camera for accurate long range shooting. Assert stood no chance.

    Automatic LCDs 2 will show you how many blocks still need to be completed on a projection if you use the "Details" command in the custom data.

    It really is a magnificent complex of edifices (edificii?) you've built there, Splitise. Those overhead 'spider-cam' shots really show it its glory - love the street light effect from the pylons from the 'spaceport' to the main complex.
    BTW - If I remember correctly, it was the 'old' radio-control script used for Manny parking in the grinder-shed ... it was _that_ long ago!!! I ~~copied~~ ahem, _was inspired_ by your Manny connector and used the same script and approach in my playthrough to drop my main "inwards goods" connector into the floor so that large constructions from the 3D printer behind it could more easily get out.
    (I've gone pretty much "full Badger" and have a fairly compact base ... given the aim is to get _off_ the planet ASAP! ... Well, it is until the planet drives you loony/evil 😜)

    I have an idea.. I’m at 35:00 so not sure what happens in the remaining 10 but before I forget… what if you used a rotor to put a small connector and use a timer block to lock, AND rotate the rotor 15’ or whatever it takes so that the canary is lined up and ready to fly out of the hangar.. granted you would need a timer and different degree for each dock… but your a smart feller I know you know what I’m trying to say and you probably already know of a reason why it won’t work but 🤷🏻‍♂️ was just a thought haha love the videos regardless

    I have designed a fairly compact drone printer for expendable drones which fit in a single large space (like a torpedo tube) and can be pushed out by a piston once ready to rock. Currently there are 5 combat variants (with different weapon load-outs) , and a utility (lifter) variant of the drones, all with a 5x5 small grid cross section.
    Also when did you turn a canary into a lift/welder combo? Did I miss an episode?
