I don't know why but I like that Gareth, despite being obviously weirder than Brent, has friends and an active love life because he's willing to hang out with people on his "level", while Brent thinks he deserves a better "class" of mate and ends up with no one.
@jm-np4mu There's the woman on the answering machine asking him to "bring the toys" and he goes home in a sidecar with a woman and her weird husband after a night out.
The ability to write this would be enough. But to be able to convey the range of emotions shown here, and to direct the camera and cast to such effect, is beyond genius.
29:38 When me and my mum first watched this episode and this happened.. Ricky Gervais standing up in that costume.. I think me and her laughed for about 30 mins non-stop. Hardcore laughter. The most hilarious thing ever put on television. I don’t know how the actors got through it. Must’ve had to record themselves staring while Ricky wasn’t there because.. 😂
It’s a good job Eric Hitchmo wasn’t present for the introductions at the beginning section. There’s a lot he wouldn’t agree with, especially in the workplace.
26:55 I’m amazed with the amount of detail that went into this that they kept the lady in the red dress breaking character in the Final Cut. I’m guessing it was because it would be very difficult to recreate that dance with each take lol
You just don't get this level of humour in the American series. My sides were splitting when Gareth interrupts by saying, "...I dunno Jennifer. I could show you lots of [proof]...".
It's worth pointing out that he really was trying to perform a meaningful appraisal. A lesser boss would have gone along with Keith's 'don't knows' and considered it a job well done
As brilliantly written as it is I find series 2 unwatchable. Series 1 is funny, there is cringe but Brent isn't ever obliterated. Series 2 is about a man's world imploding, it's too uncomfortable.
No, series 2 is about a lazy, self-aggrandising, irritating twat getting his comeuppance. Plus it’s only a sitcom. You’re not meant to take it seriously.
David Brent is refreshingly laid back for a man with such responsibility.

No it wouldn't, it makes sense within the scene that she'd laugh as what Brent is doing is obviously funny, so there was no need to cut it out.
Also people laugh at stuff in real life
“I like your little beard”
What a gift working for Brent within team individuality. 😂
They were haters in that first scene that never come over a little quire line was hilarious

It's the delivery. A lot of the jokes would be good in the right context but his sweaty, desperate, graphic delivery makes it awful.
