The Irish never forgot the kindness of the Choctaw people during the famine. To be going through such hardship themselves and to think of others in a far off country........such selflessness and compassion.

I'm part Irish through my paternal grandmother, who's family from Ireland came over as a result of the potato famine. She was the first to tell me about all of that and she and I have been involved with Native American charities as well.

@@CoachIreland mexico never forgot the Irish. The Irish stood beside mix breeds called Mexicans and native american Pueblo indian. They help fight the u.s. calvary to protect women and children and stop the massacres and theft of land. Mexico wasnt allowed to send Ireland money so they send them grains and other foods. In Mexico the irish are honored during Saint Patrick's Day. San Patricio Battalia. The native americans honored them by giving them a native tribe name, Los Chapulinas. The Grass hopper ppl. They were the only Europeans considered native americans. Children of the Land(America). No other european is considered native ppl who belong in america.

@@Castlecoke I would ultimately be guilty by association in that my Irish ancestors were the first to come over as a result of the famine. The rest of my family came over just before and after the turn of the century so they ultimately had no part in, say, the Trail of Tears or the Native American wars or anything related to the oppression or genocide of the native peoples.

Before Europeans went to America, the native people lived of the land, had a more harmonious way of life....living the dream. I feel this is how we should all be living now.
But now life feels so plastic and fake.

I wasn't taught from a young age how to dance or what tribe I was from or what my native heritage was. I found out only about three years ago that I was Aztec Yaqui. My grandmother then taught me how to dance and I have took place in about seven different Pow Wows so far and the amount of energy and openiness is amazing. The colors are beautiful and the people are amazing. I was welcomed in with open arms and nows my first year as a fancy shawl dancer. Anybody who is of native heritage should get to experience. I may not look like a native american because my skin to light and my eyes are not dark enough but my DNA has more native than I thought. Found out I was almost 57% Native American.

That's awesome. I didn't find out until after my military service and my DNA test. Then the internet happened and showed all of the culture that was still alive, not just with my great grandma. You are born native if you have the DNA (ancestry) as your ancestors are always with you, its in your lineage. Your culture is native once you learn it, and you can learn things at any age.

I remember everyone was so nice and they painted my face and gave me my own little feather band. One of them invited me to dance with them but I was extremely shy. I remember that now as an adult and it makes me appreciate everything they do and what their culture had been through.
