    The Hornby BR Standard 2MT was announced all the way back in January 2020... a lot has happened since then but today I've finally got my hands on this long awaited 00 gauge model to see if it was worth the wait!
    Featuring a metal boiler and running plate (despite not being part of the Hornby Dublo range) the BR Standard 2MT certainly appears to be a high quality 00 gauge model. But it is lacking some of the features of Hornby's more recent 00 Gauge models - the BR 9F came with a firebox LED and crew figures included while the new LNER P2 improved on that further by adding in a brand new tender connection.
    The BR Standard 2MT does have a slightly lower price tag though so will that help its chances or is this already an outdated model? Watch on to find out if it was worth the wait!

    I know some find the 2MT "plain" or "boring," but there's something so charming about it that way. It's perfectly proportioned, like the exact middle-of-the-road locomotive.

      I definitely agree with you on that one! I've always loved little black tender engines like this. The very fact that they're not meant to be special makes them so much more interesting to me. Thanks for watching 😃

      I’ve actually always thought the 2MT had a bit of an odd shape. I really don’t get why others think they are so boring (it’s honestly one of my favourite prototypes).

    The one thing I've always found off putting is the gap between loco and tender. In reality, the poor fireman couldn't keep jumping over.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If that bothers you then just shift up the drawbar for a closer connection. The issue you'll have is that it may not go round tight corners or through small radius points. Remember Hornby have to cater for a large variety of layouts. Thanks for watching 😃

    Great review! I’m definitely going to pick one of these up! Despite the missing features, I actually think this is one of Hornby’s best models yet, even if it is a bit overpriced… Even though many people find the prototype quite boring, it is actually one of my favourites as well, which is partly why I’m so keen to get one!! Also your layout looks fantastic! The flower effect in the one field is amazing, and I really like the rock face too! And the backdrop makes a huge difference as well!!

      Yeah definitely, if Hornby had released this a few years ago (as originally anticipated) then I think we'd all be amazed by this loco. As it is we've seen what Hornby can do now so this seems a bit old hat but certainly by my standards it's a great model to have on the layout.

    We were over at Loughborough last weekend at the gala run, and this loco featured strongly. Although not a great fan of British trains, I must admit that it caught my attention as being a bit like a little busybody, bustling around with its little consist, and making itself useful. I'd like to see one in Gauge 1, my preferred scale, and in live-steam as well - 'natch!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    An excellent revview as always and looking forward to recieving 78006 in green in due course. You can tell it is an "end of an era" model as it is, I think, the last new release from Hornby that doesn't have firebox flicker etc. with the delays its a shame they couldn't work some in such as 21 pin DCC

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Awesome, hopefully the green ones don't take too much longer! Yes it's definitely the last loco in this transition period. I spoke to a couple of people at Hornby about this and they said going back to rework certain features would have caused even more delays. I very much got the feeling that they just wanted to release it and shift focus onto new models.
      It's still a worthy model though and in my opinion having an 8 pin VS a 21 pin connection doesn't really make much different on a steam loco anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

    When a boy in the 1950s, my bedroom overlooked Yarm Tunnel on the then extremely busy Leeds Northern branch. Most mornings Ca. 08.00, the tiny goods yard and coal drops at Yarm would be shunted by one of this class - that would finish each shunt actually within the short tunnel. I recall the loco was chiefly No. 78015 of Northallerton MPD (Shedcode 51J). Once she had departed with her "pickup" northwards, steam & smoke would drift through into view for quite some time afterwards. I'm unable to recall any of this class on a passenger working. I later modified the basically similar "00" LMS 2-6-0 into a passable representation, but shall very likely purchase one of these highly cute (Yes, "CHARMING"!!! of models.)

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome, as long as you're happy with it that's all that matters! I think this is often the case with newer releases these days. If you already have an existing model from the last 10-15 years then the new one isn't much of an upgrade (assuming there were no major faults with the original).
      I think this is why manufacturers are starting to add the additional features now such as the firebox LED, pre-fitted stay alive/speaker, etc - to make the upgrade more worthwhile. Thanks for watching and subscribing too! 😃

    The Ivatt 2mt is one of my favourite tender engines. Hornby's model looks very nice. My only criticism with this is: The tender being attached and not uncouplerable. This is a common thing with newer models from Hornby.

      Hi there, newer models from Hornby (such as the P2, upgraded A3 and Dublo A4) actually have a plug in tender so it can easily be detached. This 2MT model has the standard drawbar Hornby have used for many years now, though it's still possible to separate the tender by removing a single screw and unplugging the wires. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

      @@NotSoSpookyGuy I think it still counts as a new model from Hornby, since this is its first release. After all the Accurascale Deltic was announced in 2018 and that only arrived last year... I think most people would still consider that a new model. Thanks for watching 😃

    This looks like the prototype, and appears very well detailed. It is not suitable for my "southern" likes, but I do have a soft spot for them, and the original Ivatt! It's just that price that stops me from buying one now! So I will wait for the retailers offers!

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I definitely think Hornby have done a great job on them... you can always make a Rule 1 exception, perhaps it's on loan. 😉
      If the past is anything to go by, little black tender engines don't seem to sell that well for Hornby (in comparison to The Flying Scotsman or cute little industrial engines) so if you're willing to wait a bit I'd say there's a really good chance you could pick up a bargain at some point. Thanks for watching 👍

  • @tagsdm
    @tagsdm 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well, personally I think they've done a bang-up job on this and I wouldn't hesitate to get one (maybe two!). A quibble or two, like the lack of a footplate crew, can be overcome. Looks and runs beautifully, I'd say. Especially for the smaller layout where a 9F, A4 or the like might seem out of place. Doesn't it look great with the three coaches, or maybe 6-7 goods wagons? Very tough to top. Wonderful review and great looking layout with the backdrop.

    Personally, I think this model runs a little too slowly. I'm not expecting a rocketship by any means, but on DC at 50% power it is a bit slower than I'd think it maybe should be.
    Having said that, that is my only criticism of the model. The build quality of the model is fantastic and there isn't any stray glue or bits dropping off.
    It's a really well made, good model. Hornby have done a good job with it.
    Cheers

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting, personally for me I always think having more range in the low end makes for a much more controllable loco. On my Gaugemaster controller I had it moving a nice trundle at around 30% with the crawl kicking in around 10-15%.
      Definitely can't fault the quality of the model, it definitely appears as though Hornby have got a handle on their QC and supply issues now. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @OlivierGabin
      @OlivierGabin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Compared to the continental Ho engines I have, German and Italian, OO UK models are always overgeared. With this model less speedy than the average OO engine, I think Hornby takes the right direction. This is a branchline engine, not an HST.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@OlivierGabin I couldn't agree with you more Olivier, it's definitely nice to see Hornby going in this direction.
      I think the best slow running 00 gauge loco I've come across so far is the Planet Industrials Victory - that has such amazing slow speed that I actually had to increase the CV settings on the decoder as it was SO much slower than all my other locos 😅

    I believe the delay was caused by multiple covid shutdowns to the factory. Some regions of China were affected by these more than others and I assume this was one of the worst hit. I believe there may also have been some delays in materials reaching the factory for similar reasons.

      Can't say I've seen any wobble from this model - unless you're talking about on the rolling road? Pretty much everything wobbles on that (it's more to do with how I've set it up rather than the model itself) so I wouldn't use that as a benchmark.

    I don’t know, as you suggests, how a £16 price increase would change someone’s opinion about this apparently great model. You like it, you have the money for it, you get it. If the knowledge that you could have had it cheaper stops one from buying it, that would be a bit sad.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

      You're comparing the old RRP to the current retailer price there. If you compare the original RRP and current RRP there's a difference of £38 which is a bit more significant. Similarly the retailers would have originally had these for pre-order at around £160 but have had to increase that price to the current £196 mark to still be able to make a profit. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

    Im surprised British Railways gave such a small tender engine lining, then again they wanted their standard locos to look smart as in the mid-50s these things were brand new, heck all the Standard locos got padded seats for the crew 😂 Looks like a nice model but I'd rather get a used Ivatt Class 2 from Bachmann (and not the tank engine version I had one of them and its own valve gear shredded itself)

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    @paulkandi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think Hornby has far to many other business interests, they need to scale down their involvement in non railway products and get this better as many other manufacture's are going to leave Hornby well behind, hope this is a turning point, they need to get back to their roots, which of coarse was model railways...great review...

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So what happens to those whose hobby is Scalextric or building Airfix kits? Hornby is flying the flag for a lot of different hobbies out there. Furthermore I suspect that if they suddenly dumped everything but their model railway range, the investors would immediately pull out and Hornby would simply cease to exist at all.
      I would argue that Hornby are starting to make big improvements already. The P2, the Turbomotive and the recent 9F were all received very well. The latest sample of the upcoming Black 5 indicate that will be a very impressive model too. Thanks for watching 👍

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes, fully understand, But other model railway manufactures, such as Bachmann, have had consistency in the quality of their products, they have always had better finish and build, have stronger motors and last more than a few runs before parts brake off, or just plain burn out, something Hornby has had a great deal of trouble with over the last 10 years or more...and really cater for the more serious modeller and not following stupid trends, such as steam punk and other TV related rubbish...

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@paulkandi I suppose it all depends on your own experience. Personally I've had to send back more Bachmann locos for return/repair than Hornby locos. Bachmann are generally one of the more expensive brands out there too.
      As for Hornby chasing trends, perhaps they are spread a bit thin but they're also the only manufacturer who caters to the whole market: from beginners buying a train set, to the Railroad range for those on a budget, right up to the full fat detailed models. I don't think anyone else is doing that and they're bringing a lot more people into the hobby as a result.
      There's no simple answer either way but personally I don't think Hornby focusing purely on it's full fat Railways or Dublo ranges is the solution.

    T.b.f. I think that the lack of flickering firebox, engine crew and boxing just points towards cutting corners, does not justify the increase in cost. The gap between tender and engine ,, well you would have to jump across . Where would the TTS sound speaker go?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it's really cutting corners if those features were never stated to be part of this model to begin with. The increase in cost is more likely to be associated with materials and workers wages.
      For the tender gap you can easily close up the drawbar if you prefer a closer coupling - but this will affect the models ability to run through train set style curves and points.
      The speaker goes in the tender with the decoder although I would recommend using the new TXS system rather than TTS now, especially as there's a dedicated 2MT sound profile due for release in a few months. Thanks for watching 👍

      I wouldn't say they're "missing features" since they were never announced to be part of this model. Hornby has upped their game for their more recent announcements but obviously going back (again) to rework this model would have caused even further delays.
      The drawbar and wire connection is the same system Hornby have used on all their tender locos for the past 10 years or so. As I said in the video, there was always going to be a transition period and this should be the end of it. Thanks for watching 👍
