@@olliecoke traditionally, anime is colored while manga is black-and-white
so technically I’m neither when it comes to rendering but it’s more of an anime face shape. Also yes, I dabble in animation so it does count as anime.
not an anime illustrator but I feel you 😭I work more with lines than areas and I try and try to do this but it never works because my brain is so set on lines

This is actually a really common practice when making realistic artworks in digital painting. You start by putting down the general idea of what you’re putting on your canvas and begin to gradually add more and more details until it begins to look like a clear and very realistic image.
This is the beauty of digital art where you don't have to completely abandon the traditional style. Your not obligated to use layers and if you do use it as minimal as possible. Plus you have the added benefit of never ever running out of a certain color and you can print your art any size you like with any type of paper.

It’s wonderful that you were doing it with the computer, but I prefer paper and the feel of a pen in my hand and the way it feels as I go across the actual page and never switch over to any kind of computer generated art for myself but you’re doing great
