1. Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport. Can't play Waterdeep without it. More Lords, buildings, cards and board and a new mechanic (risk & reward with the skulls!) 2. Viticulture: Tuscany EE. Makes the game better in every way possible. Also you might want to throw in Visit from Rhine Valley too. 3. Feast for Odin: The Norwegians. Replaces the main board with a lot better board. Also, moar stuff! 4. Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm. Variable building rows? Yes. Variable way to do combat? Yes. This one has lots of modular stuff in it but it makes the game a lot more interesting. 5. Champions of Midgard: Valhalla. The other expansion is a hit or miss, but Valhalla gives you new powers depending how many of your vikings die. It introduces a strong luck mitigation element into the game. 6. Orleans: Trade & Intrique. The new beneficial deeds is really great but the best thing is the randomized events. In base game, the events were fixed to an extent, now there's lots more variability. 7. Teotihuacan: Late Pre-Classic Period. Fixes the building the pyramid board as it now follows the same rules as the other boards. Also, moar stuff! 8. Great Western Trail: Rails to the North. It introduces a new board which balances out the strategies in the game. Also, luck mitigation! 9. 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon. This one fixes the "There's only one card I can get and I don't want it" bottleneck situation. Really good stuff. 10. Scythe: Rise of Fenris. Rise of Fenris is by far the best way to play Scythe. Just get Invaders from Afar and Rise of Fenris and that's all you need. After playing the campaign, base game Scythe feels really, really boring. (11. King of Tokyo: Power Up! Power Up introduces player powers with the cards, making each monster truly unique. Amazing expansion but just missed my Top 10).
Agree. We have the base game, but have yet to get it to the table. I think we will enjoy it but other games have been wanting to hit table of late. Now you actually have me interested in the expansion.
1- Viceroy: Times of Darkness. Basically a pack of cards, 3 modules that could be sold as promos. Absolutely the best expansion BANG ever, imo. It turned a boring base set into a very enjoyable game that is also a pure joy to play solo... Really, I was just a few steps away from selling Viceroy at a big loss until this arrived. Now its my top 10 games of all times. If you own Viceroy, you MUST get this. This is the only instance in my board gaming career that an expansion radically changed my opinion about the base game. 2- Commands and Colors: Ancients or Napoleonics - Just any expansions for these two games is a home run. Some include 2 armies and over 30 scenarios. For comparison, base game comes with 2 armies and around 20-25 scenarios! Insane value for money. 3- Leaving Earth: Both expansions. Adds amazing new game play mechanics like space stations or deep space exploration. If you enjoy solo games this is a must have. 4- Evolution : Climate. Agreed with you guys! 5- Space Empires: Close Encounters. Turns a rather flavorless space game into a very deep and gritty space opera. With all expansions, this game tops Twillight Imperium for me, not even a challenge. Honorable mention: Neuroshima Hex! armies. At 10$ a pop for a brand new army, you get a very expandable game system with very distinct and asymmetric factions!

Great list. I completely agree with Norwegians & Tuscany. I've been lucky enough to only ever play Viticulture with Tuscany. I actually only found out it was an expansion after our 2nd play of the game. I vividly remember saying 'why would you play without this?!' My 'must have' expansions would include: Underwater Cities New Discoveries (for the boards alone) Tzolkin Tribes & Prophecies (mostly for the tribes part) Teotihuacan Late preclassic period (again more for the variable powers but it also fixes game balance) German Railroads (for Russian Railroads) Other Great ones: Food Chain Magnate Ketchup Mechanism Concordia Venus & Salsa Flamme Rouge - Peleton Takenoko Chibas Scythe Rise of Fenris Also looking forward to the upcoming Tapestry expansion. I'm hoping beyond hope it can improve the buildings and use of the tech cards. What do you think about 'expansions' that are included with the base game? For example: All versions of Trickerion come with the Dark Alley 'expansion'. Personally, if it comes with the game, I don't see how that is an expansion.

Good list, although I haven't played all of those. My favorites that I have are Wingspan, European Expansion...I love how it integrates seamlessly into the game. Space Base, Emergence of Shy Pluto...also just adds some nice new content. Quacks...Herb Witches...maybe not as essential, but still good.
Abyss Leviathan has been available for over a month now. And unfortunately, Abyss was reprinted in January with a new cover and the place where you put the remaining cards is full color now, however, no Leviathan added to the base game. :(

Viticulture - I agree that stuff in "Essential" (Mamas and Papas, Fields, all the extra visitors) is definitely required. But I still love the 2-season board. I've not had the chance to use the 4-season Tuscany board much yet but really want to use it more (we've not tried Structures or Special Workers as yet)
Great list! I’d add the Hall of Heroes expansion for Raiders of the North Sea which adds more variety to an already great game. And the terrain expansion for Lords of Hellas.
Mike you said a half hour less for prelude, I think it's closer to an hour and a half! I refuse to play the game without it! I played with the same player two games, first without was 4hrs second 2.5hrs with the expansion! It is the very definition of an essential expansion!
For me the most essential expansion,without doubt, is Scroudrels of Skullport for Lords of Waterdeep. This is a necessary expansion. The base game is so generic but with Skullport the game is elevated to a whole new level. I also think that Foresaken Lore for Eldritch Horror is highly essential.
I have more expansions than different games, so I guess I do get more excited for expansions. Essential for me are Norwegians (would never play Feast for Odin by itself again), Agricola + Farmers of the Moors, Stone Age: The expansion, Village: Inn, Concordia: Salsa.
Orleans invasion slipped by me. I recall seeing at one point but never looked into it until now. Both my wife and I enjoy orleans with Trade and Intrigue expansion. Invasion sounds interesting especially the co-op option so might have to track it down through a trade or whatnot
You might still see it in the odd shop (and Shakespeare too), but good luck buying backstage pass online, it was the last thing super cute Ystari made before they were acquired by the Napoleonic Asmodee, since then they've been in placed in limbo while their people are churning out escape room games, hopefully in chains
I totally called 1 & 2... I got these because of your recommendation and they fit in perfectly. Both games should be printed with these... it is the way to play them. I also just got Kegs and More for Heaven and Ale... cant wait to give it a try. BTW: 2 best new games played this year La Stanza and Awkward Guests... if you get a chance you guys will love these.

I have no idea how they make it work... but it does. You could play 1000s of games and none of them would be the same. Solitaire is solid but putting humans in the mix really brings it to life. But dont discount La Stanza... this seems like y'alls jam. Maybe I can hit you up at DTE.
I don't play Terraforming Mars without Prelude. Ever. Other essentials would be Among the Stars: Ambassadors, Viticulture: Tuscany, Cosmic Encounter: butt-ton of alien races and Rewards Deck.
But... But I like the new look for Suburbia CE. 😅 It was mentioned in the beginning, but I do find I'm usually more excited for expansions vs new games. For all the reasons y'all mentioned, but mainly for the fact that some expansions "patch" games in that some problems I have with base games get fixed. I think, when a game is famous the publishers take advantage of the hype and produce expantions just to make more profits because they know and suppose are more easy to sell than new unknow games, but most of the time those expantions are really not necesary. IThat is why I made the decition to not buy expantion unless a lot of the community really show the expantions is necesarry and elevate yhe game to other level and is not just more stuff of the same experience.
There definitely is a business element to that, we see it in Hollywood as well with a ton of remakes and sequels. It's nice to have a known quantity and publishers can hope for a similar level of success with an expansion if the base game is super popular but I like to think most every game designer designs from a place of genuine interest in their game, hoping to bring a new element or a twist rather than simply grabbing at money.
You bing bongs are twisting my arm on Orleans invasion. Have trade already and will only play that way. Also have Stories and played twice. Way crunchier which may not be a good thing.
I am wanting to pick a game that has several expansions out there and going all out for my tax check. I know at least one of you are not a big fan but I am thinking of Talisman. I am wanting one I dont own the main game for yet so besides the Arkham files or Arcadia Quest games, do you have any suggestions for games with lots of expansions that may be cool. My favorite theme is Fantasy and Horror.? I have a lot of deep games so I was thinking Talisman cause its less deep so much easier to get to the table.

I'm hesitant in purchasing expansions. I would enjoy a new game much more than I would an expansion. This was reinforced recently when I purchased the expansion to wingspan. It was good, but did not increase my enjoyment of the game at all. I would have rather have put that $25 towards a new game. It would have given me much more pleasure.
Tim Teigen that’s totally fair. Something like wingspan might simply be “more” and maybe that’s not enough. Case in point, we haven’t got that wingspansion yet and we aren’t in a huge rush
I felt the opposite about the European Expansion. The base game alone is too focused on one common strategy, while the expansion opens the doors for multiple routes to victory. Replayability went through the roof and some other small issues were fixed too. It's essential to me.
Im in the minority Im sure but after many many many plays of Champions of Midgard, with and without, Im not a fan of Valhalla at all. It makes the game fiddly, destroys the balance and lengthened the game. I really don’t get the hype. I do like the leader die though
I own only 1 expansion (Danger Circuit), and find them to be overpriced and non-essential in nearly every case. Great designs do not need expansions. Looks over at Ra, Modern Art, and Through the Desert.
ExoRcisMo Frost INC we haven’t tried state of emergency and in the lab is good. We have that expansion and play once in a while, it definitely changes the game significantly which is cool but we usually just default to playing on the brink
I'm generally against getting any expansions, they tend to dilute and overcomplicate the original, tight design. If the base game is streamlined, I seem to enjoy much more just playing that and know that I'm playing the designer's original intended vision, if that makes sense! Evolution climate and Quacks of Quedlingburg are probably the two that I like.
Manus Noble that’s fair. An expansion we like but complicates the game is Pearlbrook for Everdell. It’s nice and all and we play it but if I was teaching the game to someone, it just adds stuff that isn’t necessary and I’d probably leave it out.
I honestly like the intro - I think it sets up the video nicely, and gives useful caveats to the content. Compared to the half hour lead-in on live streams, that intro was frickin professional.

It's nice to have a known quantity and publishers can hope for a similar level of success with an expansion if the base game is super popular but I like to think most every game designer designs from a place of genuine interest in their game, hoping to bring a new element or a twist rather than simply grabbing at money.

You bing bongs are twisting my arm on Orleans invasion. Have trade already and will only play that way. Also have Stories and played twice. Way crunchier which may not be a good thing.
I am wanting to pick a game that has several expansions out there and going all out for my tax check. I know at least one of you are not a big fan but I am thinking of Talisman. I am wanting one I dont own the main game for yet so besides the Arkham files or Arcadia Quest games, do you have any suggestions for games with lots of expansions that may be cool. My favorite theme is Fantasy and Horror.? I have a lot of deep games so I was thinking Talisman cause its less deep so much easier to get to the table.
I'm generally more excited to get expansions for games I don't own than I am for getting extra copies of games I don't like.

I'm hesitant in purchasing expansions. I would enjoy a new game much more than I would an expansion. This was reinforced recently when I purchased the expansion to wingspan. It was good, but did not increase my enjoyment of the game at all. I would have rather have put that $25 towards a new game. It would have given me much more pleasure.
Tim Teigen that’s totally fair. Something like wingspan might simply be “more” and maybe that’s not enough. Case in point, we haven’t got that wingspansion yet and we aren’t in a huge rush
I felt the opposite about the European Expansion. The base game alone is too focused on one common strategy, while the expansion opens the doors for multiple routes to victory. Replayability went through the roof and some other small issues were fixed too. It's essential to me.

Im in the minority Im sure but after many many many plays of Champions of Midgard, with and without, Im not a fan of Valhalla at all. It makes the game fiddly, destroys the balance and lengthened the game. I really don’t get the hype. I do like the leader die though

I own only 1 expansion (Danger Circuit), and find them to be overpriced and non-essential in nearly every case. Great designs do not need expansions. Looks over at Ra, Modern Art, and Through the Desert.

ExoRcisMo Frost INC we haven’t tried state of emergency and in the lab is good. We have that expansion and play once in a while, it definitely changes the game significantly which is cool but we usually just default to playing on the brink

I'm generally against getting any expansions, they tend to dilute and overcomplicate the original, tight design. If the base game is streamlined, I seem to enjoy much more just playing that and know that I'm playing the designer's original intended vision, if that makes sense! Evolution climate and Quacks of Quedlingburg are probably the two that I like.
Manus Noble that’s fair. An expansion we like but complicates the game is Pearlbrook for Everdell. It’s nice and all and we play it but if I was teaching the game to someone, it just adds stuff that isn’t necessary and I’d probably leave it out.

I honestly like the intro - I think it sets up the video nicely, and gives useful caveats to the content. Compared to the half hour lead-in on live streams, that intro was frickin professional.
