As a corporate employee of 15 years, I had never thought much of entrepreneurship more than "it's too risky, I can't do it!"... until today Zarna, when I heard you say "you spend your peak productivity years, when you have least liabilities, working your ass off for someone else"... and 15 years later, you really only have some savings (that are never enough) and the feeling of "thank god I atleast have a job" because people around you are getting laid off in droves!!
This is your best podcast so far! Thanks for lighting this thought in my head... Hopefully I'll not force my daughter into corporate life when she's that age

you can make a case that pineapples are being used to entertain clients for the sake of business purposes -- then it is legitimate :)

As a 35 year old who walked the corporate path, Zarna is spot on!! I'm on team Zarna on this issue all the way. If I had the insight then that I do now, I would run to my 21 year old self and save her from the disillusionment of corporate.

I love how all your kids are such workaholics and know so much about finance and seem so driven. You have raised your kids really well. They've done you proud and set new standards for me.

The parents are so eloquent with fantastic vocabulary and enunciation. The children are all following in the same pathway and it a pleasure to listen to them.

Strolling through my late thirties, I have hit a funny realization: I totally skipped my calling as an entrepreneur back when my spirit animal was more 'fearless adventurer' than 'cautious planner.' I have been like a brand whisperer, turning every project I touch into gold, yet the thought of starting my own thing? Paralyzing. It's like realizing you're a gourmet chef who's only ever cooked with a microwave. Had I taken the leap in my invincible twenties, I might be dictating this from a hammock on my private island by now. But no, I have been playing it safer than a turtle in its shell. The irony? I am convinced I could conquer the world if I just stopped overthinking every possible outcome. So, here's a shoutout to all the late bloomers: It's never too late to trade in the 'what-ifs' for 'why nots.' Let's make our 'someday' today. Because honestly, if we can make magic for others, it's high time we start our own show. This podcast is truly a mental stimulation. I could realate to so much you guys discussed!:)

🤣Every time Shallabh brings up IIT, it sends me on a laughter trip. My husband, a proud IIT and IIM alum, wears his credentials like a superhero cape. He's convinced that these institutions eclipse Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and the like. In his world, they're not just universities; they're the ultimate badges of honor. I mean, who needs Hogwarts when you've got IIT and IIM, right? It's like comparing a gourmet meal to a home-cooked feast; he insists the latter is Michelin-star worthy. Bless his cotton socks!

I completely agree with Zarna and I did exactly what she said … I started my own company right out of college and that is why I could do it … their is no way I could have taken that risk at this older age…. My friends have exited from these startups and made millions … so it is a risk reward and you will learn from TH-cam and figure it out and get business and accountability coaching. If you want to make something work … you will!

There is a difference among these 3 mindsets: profit-minded, passion-living, and both. If you have both, you're an entrepreneur. If you only think of making money, you are a business person who may not have a passion for managing. If you're a passion-living, working for companies that devalue you is detrimental.

A+ for Zarna - I just love the way you speak about entrepreneurship: you know it, you live it and you inspire others so much when it comes to business (I'm an entrepreneur now in my 40s). A+ for Shalabh too, because he did create a comfortable life for this family with his corporate work (in my 20s and 30s I also did a corporate career, and I totally respect using the corporate scene to secure one's immediate needs).

Just as I thought what has the world come to - Aunty Zarna hosting an entire podcast episode with nuanced opinions, not showing who's the boss and even putting in the effort to sound like ordinary other citizens to explain her pushing for the kids to learn computers.
And all the way at the end 44:15 when the tiger mom sabre was dangled the balance in the universe felt restored! 😂

What was missing in your discussion was what would bring you the most satisfaction at the end of your life - a dedicated single minded life and time in earning money (that is what entrepreneurship is) ignoring all the time for yourself, or your loved ones need with you or a life that involves doing what you enjoy doing and leverage doing it for the comfort and the future security of your loved ones. The latter course may not make you super rich but you’ll feel richer when you turn back review your life.

Zarna is correct. Working for yourself is better than working corporate. However, most people don't like the stress of unpredictable income or lack of affordable benefits, which can be problematic for a lot of self-employed people.

small and budding startups helps you learn a lot. it doesn't necessarily have to be a big corp. think about it if you were in NVIDIA 10 years ago and stayed there, the experience and profit would be phenomenal

I appreciate Zarna's humorous take on being regressive, right-winger, doctor-'endorser'. Also got a chance to see her live, it was truly fantastic! However, labeling an employee as "a sheep" is regressive. As a Design Director in a family-owned business, I value the autonomy to make decisions and take ownership of them. On the other hand I agree to your point that one must have an edge to not get replaced by the younger generations. The simple solution to that I feel is to be a 'Life-long learner'.
Secondly, It's crucial to consider factors like mental health, stress and anxiety along with all kinds of health problems, are increasingly prevalent among entrepreneurs. For instance, Nithin Kamath, CEO of a Billion Dollar company 'Zerodha' recently had a stroke, underscores the challenges of entrepreneurship. I guess my point is both employees and employers are essential, one's life priorities and personal acumen should be the ultimate guiding force in deciding what path you want to take. Undermining either, I feel, is in bad taste!

As someone who has been on both sides of the table, I'd say that you must be passionate to succeed in the entrepreneurship. Without passion, you'll break down soon

A+ to Shalahb because he always praises Zarna! I think this act by men of his age group is rarely done, as they have major insecurities when it comes to even being ok with women in leadership roles, never mind talking about it in public.

Restarted my career in 2022 in Engg after a decade of break for child rearing. It's tough, ruthless. My experience also entails where nobody will believe you and will do everything to demoralise , destabilize, alienate, gossip behind your back. Always missed the work, not the office politics.

A grade for Shalabh . In my opinion, any work or job encompasses us to do certain things we don't love which we need to do. therefore its important ti have love for the core job so much so that we can get up everyday and give our best to things which we are required to do and which we love to do.... And I strongly believe that we make money in things which we do whole heartedly with vigour and enthusiasm

The defense industry is a really good industry here in the US to start working with. Tons of experience is taught. Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, MBDA , bae systems all pay very well and teach valuable skills in the i.t sec. They also value there best employees and doesn't matter the age.
