The Pennsy T1 Turbine from Lionel is a wonderfully performing Old „Lady“ … when I was living in Florida - nearly 40 years back - I got it and I am running it once in a while … however not in such a superb lay-out than you - Jowolar - Holger from Mannheim, Germany - since last week …

671 with the smoke bulb and a non-smoking 333. Cool tinplate passenger cars too. 😎👍

An attractive and fine running model... the first year the 671 was sold, 1946, Lionel used a special light bulb to melt a pellet that would make smoke. However the substance easily splashed out of the bulb and made a mess inside. The original pellets were made of a somewhat dangerous substance and Lionel quickly replaced the system in 1947 with a much safer one using a nichrome wire to heat a safer formulation of pellet. Often these units work poorly because children ignored the instructions and stuffed more than one pellet in at a time.
The mechanism also changed from 1946 to 1947- originally the motor was horizontal with a spur gear, that drove a shaft inside the chassis which engaged with worm gears on the front and rear axle. The reverse unit could be disengaged by use of a plug on the brush plate of the motor. This design was expensive to make, and was redesigned with an angled motor that only drives the rear axle. The reverse unit was reconfigured to have a lever that sticks up through the top of the locomotive, to replace the jack on the brush plate.
I worked on one of the 1946 models, it was very interesting inside and I quite liked the mechanism, aside from the poor performing light bulb smoke unit. Lionel sold a kit to convert the 671, 2020, and 726 models from 1946 to have the better smoke unit that was introduced in 1947- many engines were converted, but many still remain unchanged with the light bulb smoke unit.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! My locomotive had a complicated construction to make it smoke. With a kind of cap that moved up and down to simulate puffs of smoke. The thing was causing problems so I disconnected it from the electricity and the locomotive has been running perfectly ever since.
