  • Is your transmission getting hotter than usual? Is your truck overheating more at low speeds? It could be your fan clutch. Watch this to find out!

    My truck was def red lining at the temperature gauge, and I bought the truck with it over heating…(def wasn’t overheating in the 200 miles or so when I bought it from a sketchy girl) has a new water pump so I assumed truck was maintained
    200 miles later engine over heat and coolant was draining so fast. Lost story short, I pulled out the top radiator hose. Used a water hose to spray in to see if any leaks and sure enough a leak in the bottom radiator…. Then I noticed they reused the old clutch fan so I just replaced the whole water pump, and a new clutch fan…. And when you do that particular job, you gotta be sure to bleed all the air correctly and fill with new coolant correctly! You don’t just pour into reservoir and call it a day….( you gotta pour the gallon into water pump hose line directly and then fill the radiator directly , then put the top radiator hose together, button it all back up, and then finally fill the reservoir…)
    (But I removed my clutch fan by using a large crescent wrench, and a rubber mallet hammer and just hit it a few times till large but came loose, that’s all I wanted to say) truck works great now and have no idea which I did to fix the over heating issue lol oh I did change water pump thermostat too lol

    I changed mine in an 04 Suburban. My coworker said I should upgrade to dual electric fans. I told him I'm not spending over $400 for that kit. Plus when that clutch engages, it puts out around 8000cfm. I'll stick with the $60 clutch and the noise. I'm not worried about HP loss, it's a Suburban.

      Yea - not sure what to say about your coworkers opinion. I suppose lots of stop and go in a hot climate might be a good idea to have elec. fans or if you do a ton of towing maybe? Although I bet if you asked a GM engineer they'd tell you the fan clutch, if working properly, moves more air than elec. fans - just speculation on my part! I live in an area that's pretty cool most all the time so fan clutch set-up has always worked fine for me + I don't really work it that hard towing and such.

    Thanks for the video it helps out alot.i bought the clutch because I had a hunch that it was the culprit from the same symptoms but i wanted to make sure that was it.i already took it off and will be purchasing the new one shortly wish me luck.oh and i think mine was probably due for one anyway.its a 99 Silverado with about 300k miles and still has the original clutch.probably time to change .lol.thanks for the help.

      Here's how I look at it as the approach to all my vids: if you are a DIY'r and you're on youtube looking for solutions, you likely don't have diagnostic tools and you don't want to bring it to the shop to pay big bucks. The only diagnostic you have is the symptoms your car is having and how those compare to someone else's symptoms. Those exact details are important + I'm a mechanical engineer and I've designed many, many things so details from A-Z are very important. Thanks for the compliment!

    wheres your plastic cowl to direct the flowing air directly on to the engine ?

    • @paulhaines5755
      @paulhaines5755  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Its removed. I put it on after I finished the repair. If it was on there you couldn't see any details in the vid and I'd be pointing at a fan cowling the entire time.

    No fan shroud. Every vehicle will overheat without one. You drive that truck with no fan shroud in a warm or hot climate, it will overheat instantly. Your killing your truck!

      It's a Chevy it can take it! Actually, I took the vid while in the process of putting it back together 100%. I had not put the shroud on yet so you could see better what I was talking about in the vid. The shroud would have been in the way making it hard to video some details. I suppose I forgot to mention that when I was talking during the vid. Sorry.

    It doesn't help that you don't have a fan shroud.

      You are quite gracious to respond to that comment. Anybody knows the upper shroud has to come off for this job.

      @@rohitsvs1 Thanks for backing me up! I try hard to make these vids useful. One of the things I strive for when I do vids is offer lots of details. That way, if you are trying to diagnose, you can compare your situation to what I experienced. Also, I'm a mechanical engineer and details are important in all things I design or try to fix.

      For some reason, you've drawn all the idiots to this video. Thank you for the details. I have a 2005 plow truck doing almost the same thing with the gauges. Going to change the clutch.
