When Himmel and the Hero Party meet Frieren, she isn't wearing the earrings. She is, however, wearing the earrings in flashbacks after joining the party. I believe that she had kept Flamme's earrings after her passing and decided to wear them when she finally went out to kill the DK. It's how she brought Flamme along with her to show Flamme her dream. Freiren continues to wear the earrings to show Flamme the 'peaceful' world she wanted.
Yes, they look a bit different, but that's what happens to things over 1k years.
Pay attention to Serie's ears, rumor is that she is wearing the other part of Flamma's earrings.

During the flashback the amount of screen time starting from Flamme's death to her conversation with Himmel represents the lengh of time Frieren lived throughout that and the quick flash of frames showing their journey represents the time she spent on their quest so it gives a good reference just how short her time with them was compared to the rest of her life.
You're right. The pacing and the use of flashbacks in this show is phenomenal.

Look at the book Frieren has to translate in the first episode.
I think the Scales of Obedience skill depends on Aura's perception too as it is cast. So when Frieren's suppressing the mana she's suppressing it from the skill too and she slowly lets it out.

The orphan reveals so far. Fern is an orphan of war, Stark is an orphan of a demon attack, Eisen is an orphan of a demon attack, and now it's revealed that Frieren is an orphan of a demon attack.

Flamma as well. She tells Frieren that she is the same when Frieren says the demons took everything from her. Maybe not confirmed, but certainly it strongly suggests that Flamma was orphaned by a demon attack before Serie took her in as an apprentice.

Himmel and Heiter are also orphans, they even grew up in an orphanage.
Himmel in one flashback mentions his mom though and I think he said she died of a disease.

Himmel and Heiter were also orphans, having known each since living in the orphanage together. It is unclear to me if they were orphaned by demons also or human wars.
That short flashback, that shows so much in so little time, is a masterpiece. You can see them fighting Aura in it, too.
Nuking a hill without even the need for a wand out, so satisfying.
One of the important themes for this anime is the lines of teachers and apprentices. Here we see more of Flamme and her teachings to Frieren. And there's an interesting detail, Flamme regretted that in the end she had only taught Frieren to fight. In my opinion that means Flamme was regretting she couldn't teach Frieren how to live, and that lessons came later in Frieren's life, when she met some idiot who loved the spell to create a field of flowers. Flamme taught Frieren how to be a great battle mage. Himmel taught Frieren how to live.

In the end, Fern was correct in her prediction. Frieren doesn't fight Aura directly but uses deception and trickery.
RIP Tanaka Atsuko, the VA of Flamme. She passed away August last year.
The epic soundtrack when Frieren releases her full mana is called "Frieren The Slayer" and is her personal boss theme
Note the differences in the master-apprentice relationships between Flamme & Frieren vs Frieren & Fern.... Such as Flamme had Frieren address her as "master", but Frieren never did that with Fern....
It's probably my favorite episode.
In episode 2 you can see Frieren drawing a circle around Fern. It might mean the teaching of concealment.
Fern seemed to have an innate ability to suppress her mana from the get go as Frieren said in episode 1. But she certainly helped Fern refine it and build up her mana reserve.

I think the demon king wanted all elves dead because the ones who become mages, as theyre long lived, could pose the greatest threat to demons.

Such an awesome arc that builds the world so good. Love the flashback with Flamme telling Frieren to just lie low and not do anything until she has the opportunity to kill the Demon King. It's like she knew the future. And the party going to find her was great with Himmel and Frieren trading lines. This show is amazing.

love the way this anime portrays time and how frieren perceives it. The timelapse of frieren's life from the death of flamme to the meeting of himmel is roughly 100x as long as the flashes of their 10 year adventure right after. that one is like half a second. blink and you'll miss it. that's how it felt for frieren. yet that short blink of time had a bigger impact on her than the 1000 years before that, because of the relationships she built.

And perhaps this gives insight into why Frieren is often so destructive to the landscape herself. 😉
@@blshouse Honestly its just how she shows her emotions. She seems calm and collected and rarely shows much emotion, but every once in a while when she casts a spell, you can tell how she is really feeling.

recall when Qual was shooting Zoltrack it was BLACK, whereas when Frieren and Fern shoot Zoltrack its WHITE.

I think she's just lazy, because Fern also suppresses her mana for life and doesn't sleep in as much.

@@LoricSwift lazy is probably too harsh a term, but I maintain it's a part of her personality not the mana suppression.
@@kumogekkou Fern's been doing it for a little over a decade, whilst Frieren's been holding it in for more than a millennium. That's a couple orders of magnitude's worth of fatigue there, so chances are that it's a contributing factor to her sleeping a few extra hours every so often.
@@kumogekkou When you have thousands of years, what's the hurry? And of course all of this can be simultaneously true to a greater or lesser extent - it doesn't have to just be down to one reason.
