    One of my favs is: "Marx never was even a worker, but still always goes on about the working class!"
    Yeah, and you dont have to be mentally ill to be a psychiatrist, and you dont need to be an alcoholic to study the effects of alcoholism on society.
    And before some smartypants cuts in, no i didnt say that workers are mentally ill or alcoholists.
    And damn, ive never been a woman but i wholeheartedly support the struggle for equality, cause i have eyes and brains, i can observe the world around me and see how women have been and are being oppressed.
    So please dont say: "How can you support feminism when youre not even a woman!"

    in addition to being before the civil rights act, 1964 is also before primaries required actually following votes, They held the primaries and then had the conventions, where party delegates would pick the candidates for president and vp. And if they felt like it they'd pick the person who got the most votes, but they could also just not.
    The 1968 Democratic Convention is a particularly famous example.

    The argument about collectivisation is infuriating to me.
    Because this event of a country transitioning from small farms as primary agriculture method to large scale farming is not unique to USSR.
    And when this economic transition happened in the UK this ended up in a huge amount of former farmers becoming landless, and thus homeless and poor ond the government response was to make vagrancy punishable by hanging.
    Compared to that collectivisation was really humane.

    57:16 Just as a note about 'caught by surprise by the Nazi attack'. I'm assuming the point in the documentary is that the Soviet Union was now friendsies with the Germans that it did not prepare. Which is complete nonsense. You can actually trace a lot of what Soviets did internationally as reactions to German moves.
    However, surprise was a critical element of Barbarossa and its initial successes. Without going into the political manoeuvring and the actions the Soviet government took before 22 June (or about 12-14 June when the imminent attack became evident), the reason for what happened was that the Red Army did not have the time to properly mobilise, and was moving in multiple echelons towards the western border when the attack began, with the bulk of the army still far from it. The Germans initially always faced a small part of the Red Army as a result.

      That gets into the ancestral splits and divisions among Leninists, and between Leninists and other Marxians. There are a number of Internationals on offer, made up of differing traditions, both Stalinist and Trotskyist (at least a couple of each), and two or three among alleged social democrats and Marxian electoralists. Attempts to build broad lefts are very much like movements for church unity. In the end no-one seems to be prepared to merge with anyone else or to disband their party to help form a new, class-wide one. If you're lucky you get a new party which is moderately popular, like Podemos (which did merge with the previous electoralist communist Left Unity, so now they are the same ticket of Podemos Unidos "together we can"). But for the most part ML parties don't play well together, because they areall hoping to get to play the Bolsheviks in their country some day, and snatch power from all their rivals.

    Y'know... I wouldn't say a basic reading would refute thoughts like "Carl Marx said the revolution is pre destined." That one... arguing *against* that idea isn't such a basic level understanding because Carl Marx economic life work was basically illustrating how capitalism (like very other system before it) is a finite "game" rather than a infinite game and will grind itself to a halt in a crash. As the profits fall the leadership desperate to retain their flow of power squeezes the workers more and more until there is nothing left to squeeze out of them and the whole system collapses. Marx dialectical materialism ( "material reality determines ideas" as opposed to idealism's "ideals determines our reality" ) is this huge argument about our paths being pre determined by the core rules of whatever social structure we are currently in. Saying it is not arguing that we are on a pre determined path, or pre destined path actually seems... to be a misreading of his work...

    • @Ajente02
      @Ajente02 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Revolution is not pre-destined because, though dialectical materialism posits that material reality determines social consciousness, it doesn't eliminate the subjective agency of the social classes in historical processes. Thus, it's perfectly possible for capitalism to continue running (at least until climate change kill us all, or overexploitation/depletion of natural resources leave us with nothing to survive), despite having cyclical crisis and squeezing out every single surplus possible from the workers, as far as workers don't acquire consciousness of their situation, and deliberately organize and mobilize to destroy the system.
      In a nutshell: revolutions are not spontaneous events, they are consciously organized by the revolutionary subjects in history (given, of course, the proper material conditions for them to flourish).

    • @colonel__klink7548
      @colonel__klink7548 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ajente02 I think your first paragraph actually really helps demonstrate the point I was going for. Material reality determines social consciousness "the world determines all ideas" instead of Hegel's "Ideas determines the world."
      This viewpoint has some philosophical consequences. For one it denies at a fundamental level any human agency (and the existence of man as a precious living thing with will, instead of a mere chain of chemicals reacting to stimuli with no more moral value than a shiny stone) and therefore falls into believing in social determinism. Ie, the revolution is inevitable because capitalism will change the environment, which determines social consciousness. At least that's the logical conclusion of dialectical materialism. It's also one of the reasons why even as I find myself sympathetic to various Marxist causes I'm not a supporter.

    • @Ajente02
      @Ajente02 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@colonel__klink7548 We are both in the same page with the DiaMat's material determination of ideas. What I was clarifying to you is that, contrary to what you're trying to expose, this doesn't mean human agency is denied, or that historical events are fatally determined. That would be a mechanicist view of materialism, not a dialectical one.
      Both Marx and Engels, and well as Lenin, recognized consciousness is not just _"a mere chain of chemicals reacting to stimuli",_ but an emergent phenomenon *produced* by such chain of electro-chemical reactions. Some examples of this can be seen through their works:
      *_"Men make their own history,_*_ but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past."_ - 18th Brummaire of Louis Bonaparte, Karl Marx (1852).
      _"With the seizing of the means of production by society, production of commodities is done away with, and, simultaneously, the mastery of the product over the producer. [...] Man’s own social organisation, hitherto confronting him as a necessity imposed by nature and history, now becomes _*_the result of his own free action._*_ The extraneous objective forces that have hitherto governed history pass _*_under the control of man himself._*_ Only from that time will man himself, with _*_full consciousness, make his own history_*_ - only from that time will the social causes set in movement by him have, in the main and in a constantly growing measure, the results intended by him. It is the humanity's leap from the kingdom of necessity to the kingdom of freedom."_ - Anti-Dühring, Friedrich Engels (1878).
      Revolution is "inevitable" only insofar as capitalism (due to its inherent internal contradictions) lays the material conditions for revolution to happen eventually. But, again, as I said in my previous comment, for revolution to happen *_someone_* has to make it happen; it won't happen spontaneously nor automatically, it must be deliberately and consciously organized by the working classes. If there is no revolutionary consciousness, no revolutionary organization, and no revolutionary action, the constant spontanous revolts and social upheavals during the cyclical capitalist crisis will pass and go without a fuss. If this work is not done, if class consciousness is not raised, if revolutionary organizations are not built, and if revolutionary actions are not taken, capitalism will continue to reign free perpetually until the Earth is made uninhabitable thanks to overexploitation/depletion of natural resources and antropogenic climate change.

    I've got no problem with the idea that in most cases the rule by communist parties had majority approval, or at least acceptance, but that it was "what the people chose", as if there was a monolithic consent, is much harder to demonstrate. Elections as well as opinion polls do give you some periodic data about who supports what and who. So like with Russia "the people chose" when and how? The Bolsheviks lost the elections for the Constituent Assembly, for instance. They previously won all the elections to the soviets, especially in Petrograd and the Supreme Soviet (a structure itself made up on the spot by the Bolsheviks and others to house the revolutionary party leaderships that didn't have to be made up of delegates from the local and regional soviets). You can argue that the October coup expressed the revolutionary will of the Petrograd proletariat, and perhaps the whole Russian proletariat, but only at that moment. Indeed part of the reason for Trotsky's haste in particular was the recognition that such revolutionary zeal could wane away if Kerensky was left in authority much longer spreading despondency by setting up interminable all-party conferences that could never come to any firm decisions about how to move forward due to the obstinacy of the Cadets and other bourgeois representatives. So this issue of consent doesn't go away because there was a revolution once that created a government of one party but which went on to ban all opposition. The claim of consent thereafter is unverified by the kind of elections that happened in the soviets during 1917. Without competitive elections there's no range of candidates to choose between, and no means of recall of anyone who was previously elected or subsequently appointed. Recall being another of the proletarian demands made since the Levellers and the Chartists, to keep elected people obedient to those who voted for them. But their primary demands were for the vote, and frequent elections, annually, in the case of the Chartists. Elections where voting is mandatory and there is only one candidate for every position don't tell you anything about what the people want or believe in. That isn't the people being in charge. Whoever selects the candidates before the people are compelled to vote for them is. "Who do you think makes up the party?" Well, obviously only a small minority of the voting age population, and then you have a membership which is largely by appointment. Membership is given out to those considered deserving, not to all who apply even. Like famously Putin was made a member of the party as a job requirement to graduate as a lawyer. He hadn't previously applied because he didn't believe in Marxism, but he said the right words and signed the correct documents so he could progress in his career. Membership was conferred by local party leadership on whoever was considered necessary, as having leadership ability or administrative talent. So increasingly the membership of ruling parties had a different class character than would be expected for "the dictatorship of the proletariat". Increasingly pmc, made up of white collar professionals, managers and bureaucrats, more than ordinary workers, continuously pruned for loyalty to the incumbents above them rather than proletarian consciousness, or understanding of and enthusiasm for Marx.
    Of course Reagan says "pitiful social progress". Conservatives always denigrate social gains because they fundamentally don't give a shit about workers and poor people, and resent being forced to think or talk about social problems, and despise any money or help being given to ordinary people rather than to bourgeois. It's always a minimised afterthought, because the whole of conservative political thought is an exercise in hiding from the elephant in the room of the distribution of wealth and income, and the human consequences of the system that enriches them, and making mountains out of molehills of cultural this and spiritual that to shift attention and priority away from class conditions.

    55:44 I love you Hakim, but that's a silly argument. Poland was reborn after more than a century of partitions and was in territorial conflicts with almost all of its neighbors. Do you think that all these neighbors had the same right to regain the territories they lost to Poland (hint: Germany was one of those neighbors)? Would the same apply to Poland and its pre-partition lands, or is a century too long? What is the cut-off date?
