Thank You very much for your 3 part video on replacing the cylinder head gasket on the Jetta 1.8. I have a 2002 and blew the head gasket do to the water cooling line to the turbo leaking. It took me a week to complete the repair but the car is running in the driveway and sounds great.

Excellent work, you are the only one who could explain the operation of the tensioner of the chain of the camshafts and the reason why the marks are misaligned

your videos are super informative! Great videos. Im going to be doing this same job. not because my timing belt snapped. its because my mechanic botched the whole repair when i had him do the timing.

For anyone watching this in the future note that the triangles MUST point to the slot on the camshaft. You need to count the number of chain links inbetween the triangles. Google how to do that. The tensioner doesn't change or correct the timing, it just keeps tension.

Just thought I would add to replace the 3 turbo to exhaust manifold bolts. These are stretch bolts and not recommended to be reused. Great posting as usual by RNR.

Great video you are very articulate one thing I would like to mention is to check the inlet oil screen that is under the chain tensioner for debris that is very important if you are not installing a new one.

A trick that I've found that works really well for cleaning a block for a gasket is to take Marvel Mystery Oil on a rag and rub it onto the surface and cover it with a piece of plastic wrap for a few hours. Come back with a plastic scraper and all the junk just comes right off. Once you've gotten all the junk removed take another rag with brake cleaner on it and rub it down a few times to get rid of the MMO. I know it's an old guy's cure all. But, I swear it's one of the handiest things to keep on the shelf.

I would never had attempted this job if it wasnt for your video! Thanks for doing it!!
I am to the part where i take the valve cover off. My 2004 A4 is a little different.
There is a coolant hose going down through the intake manifold. When i was trying to take it off, the fitting snapped on whatever it was attached to, so i have to figure out what that is and order a new one. I hate that the plastic parts get so brittle over time.

I was going to skip your video because I'd like to see the job done on a transverse-mounted Jetta motor (mostly how to get to the exhaust manifold). However, you did an outstanding job. One trick I like to use so that I don't pinch the head gasket when I'm placing the head is to put 4 wooden dowels in some of the bolt holes to reduce my chance of messing up the gasket. Thanks for the Excellent Video.

    Hello!
I appreciate this video and are currently working on fsi 2.0t cylinder head just finish assembling but i was hoping for some advice!
I placed cams off lower block on bench. Lining up using a cam alignment tool some of the lobes on cam are compressing some of the vavles before installing the cylinder head on lower block. Is it normal timing to have some of the valves slightly opened with the proper timing mark$? Thank you for your videos!

  • @krissrock

Question for you. I just did a head swap my 1.8t. I followed the same instructions for the head bolts. But I still ended up with oil slowly weeping from 1 corner of the head. I was able to tighten the head bolts more..maybe another 30-45 degrees. So my question is do think the head bolt process is sufficient with an aluminum head that expands and contracts so much? or would u think any slow oil leak at the head points to warpage?

Hi, I would like to congratulate you for your video! I have a doubt with the socket that you used to remove the screws of the head, are RIBE M11? several people use the M10, however in the ETKA indicates that the screws in 2.8l, V6 engines are M11! this is very similar to the TORX T55, which one really should be used?

  • @mikepalmer1770

You really shouldn't use brakleen cuz it takes all the oil away from the cylinder walls and the the Pistons I find the WD-40 works quite well and lubricates it and prevent rust if you're going to have it open for a while

(Exhaust side) arrow on cam cap should line up with notch in cam gear. (Intake side) notch will be just past the arrow on the cam cap to the right. Starting above the notch on the cam gear (exhaust side) there should be exactly 16 rollers between exhaust and intake cam gear notches. Or looking down at the top of the chain tensioner split 8 rollers to the left and 8 rollers to the right. Your last roller should be directly above the notches on both cam notches on either side. Cam cap arrows and notches should still be as stated above. Looked like he had it right. Main thing is 16 rollers between the notches. Also, another indicator are the lobes at the front of the cams. Exhaust is at about 135 deg. Intake is at about 45 deg. Both lobes should be pointing inwards at those angles towards one another. They should (almost) point at inner cam cap bolts but, if you drew straight lines from the crests of the lobes towards the bolts you should not point directly at them but just befor them. Hope that makes sense. This can be really stressful until you do it a couple times. Good luck.

Recently my mk4 gti 1.8t timing chain broke...caused damage to 4 of my valves and one cylinder head...so my mechanic sent the head to a shop where they smooth out the damage? i guess? from what he said and replaced the 4 bent valves. and a couple of other things like the water pump and pulleys, tensioner, chain etc. i get my car back and it runs soo slow. it revs up but its like it struggles to push up to 20. my acceleration response is so slow...could this be because of work done to the engine? the job costed me 1575...he says wait two or 3 weeks for the parts to settle but will my car go back to normal or am I doomed to have to get new engine? is it a computer thing? no light or anything are on. I'm so stumped. its only at 97k miles. if anyone could give any info. I would greatly appreciate it! thanks.

You're never supposed to lubricate/oil the threads on any bolts that require a specific torque rating as it drastically changes the way the bolt holds the torque.

The old bolts would have stretched, that is why you have to replace them, yes that would a reasoned for the mixture or the head & block surfaces are scored or warped.

Depends on the engine code of your a4 and the engine code of the donor vehicle.
Click yourself through this site [1] and see if maybe the part number of your cylinder head matches with the donor vehicle.
I know the cylinder heads tend to differ in intake port size (some have a larger intake port, some a smaller).
But i have no idea what else is different.
