Oh yes, phenomenal for sure, but I'm gonna raise my hand and say it's arguably Reginald Dwight, closely followed by the much maligned and derided Philip Collins.
Hard not to cry whenever I hear this. Reminds me of my dear auntie who passed away this year. I remember visiting her in the nursing home after the Alzheimer's took control. To see someone you love like that can only break your heart.
after I learned the back story on this song it always brings tears to my eyes now, it was written for his grandmother who had Alzheimer's just so sweet of him to do
Thank you SO much for that, both my parents developed dementia, possibly Dad's due to (in his mind 'posh') alcohol but Mum went down HARD. I was staying at their place, so helped when I could. The worst part was when she KNEW it was happening. I've nursed and worked respite care in the community. Definitely sad and unfortunate... but when you just didn't know the backstory... It ripped me to pieces, away from them since my sister enacted POA and just packed them up and moved them out. (anxiety disorder, clinical depression PTSD...) But she didn't inform me. EVER. I'm not in it for the money, Mum used to joke 'money can't buy you happiness but it allows you to be miserable in comfort'! I have fought since I was 12 years old for my mental health issues. Dad never chlorinated his gene pool before breeding and Mum didn't know that much, isolated and with my Sister, glorious woman, having a fall onto a hard carpet. Nowt was thought. Until.... Intellectually disabled, a grand mal epileptic and the happiest person in my family. I'm old, you're only young once but you can be immature forever, but a hairdresser plucked out my first grey hair in my late teens. Stephanie has yet to sprout one! Long story but I pray she's happy.
So glad i came to the comments. I cared for my grandmother and she also swore that someone had stolen her blue dresses... Thank you for the back story, brought tears to my eyes too (the song) and bless the lady below that cared for her father and mother! 👍😘🥰
An Absolutely Brilliant Collaboration Between Two Genius Gents. Mr Costello Thank You For This Amazing Great Classic And Also Many More Majestic Memories You Have Given Us All.Your Autobiography Is Just Belting Cheers.
i like both versions elvis and steve nieve can really pull the heartstrings......what a voice...'SHE SPOKE HIS NAME OUT LOUD AGAIN!"...............he just kills it....
Elvis Costello is an absolute legend of music To all those overproduced, shite, 1D type mediocre at best artists, have a look here, this is what real talent looks like
I like this acoustic version better than the version that was a hit. The hit version made the song a poppy happy peppy little thing. This song has a lot of depth, a lot of sadness and a ton of pain. The acoustic version captures what the song really is about.
I fell in love with old ladies memories as a child speaking to the ladies I spent time with as they slowly died, My Grans friends , As I wheeled my lovely Gran round the ward to see her friends
My grandmother Marie recently passed away at age 108, in Livermore, California. My Father had not seen his Mom in 25 years yet. I deeply regret that I was not the to listen to her.
The Boat That Rocked tells the story of a British pirate station. The one I listened to was a Dutch one. I'm from Holland you know. You can find the Radio-Veronica story at wikipedia.
My good friend, my best friend's name is Jane or as I call her Veronica, she is dead now she died very young to young. I love this record . I love you Veronica and always will. R.I.P. x
Thanks for the upload, love this song. By the time I was 5 all my dolls were named Veronica ___ , as in Veronica Marie, Veronica Louise, etc. Naturally, I wanted my Confirmation name to be Veronica instead of the patron saint for my birth date, which was the normal practice. My mother said I could only if I could find the name in the Bible. I didn't look in the Bible, but I knew it was in a book of Bible stories that we had so I showed her that and Veronica is my Confirmation name! LOL
Most casual fans have no idea that this song which one could argue is his most commercial hit was actually co-written with Paul McCartney! In the late 80’s Paul’s then manager mentioned to him how well his caliber of songs were when he worked with a collaborative partner. That of course being John Lennon. So around 1987/1988 some names were tossed around as potential collaborators for Paul to work with. He of course ended up working with another fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello. This particular track was a co-write between the two. There are also some greatly joint written songs on both Paul’s solo albums Flowers in the dirt and the album off the ground. And if any of you are completist fans like myself: just google/youtube McCartney/declan macmanus the later name being costello’s real name and you will find a plethora of acoustic demos that they made around this time period. Nearly two albums worth. It’s a shame that only a handful of their amazing collaborations only trickled out here and there over just an album or two period for each of them. Would love to hear way more stuff by them!
They made a series of around a dozen demos together which were intended for a joint album that was never produced because they couldn't agree on how to produce it. You will find them on You Tube. They are the nearest thing I have heard to a new Beatle album. Magical.
You are right the movie was about Radio Caroline. I believe several of the dj's went on to work with BBC radio 1 when it was set-up. Mainly transmitted to UK but of course some parts or Europe could receive this.
In Holland we could receive radio Carolie also. I think our Radio Veronica was inspired by the things they did. Both stations operated in territorial waters and after the law was adapted they were doomed to die. By the many protests of the listeners our Radio Veronica got a place in the national broadcasting. By the way: in mean time I've seen 'The Boat That Rocked' : A must!
Oh no, I love YOUR story - a pirate radio station named Veronica on a ship in the middle of the North Sea!? I love it! Imagine the irony if they were really pirates, too. lol
Yes, Steve Nieve on the piano :) This concert was released on DVD as "Elvis Costello - Live (A Case For Song)" and can be had for about $5-$20 if you look in the right places (eBay, discogs.com) www.discogs.com/Elvis-Costello-Live-A-Case-For-Song/master/883347 (US Version) www.discogs.com/Elvis-Costello-A-Case-For-Song-Live/release/5898778 (Europe) 4 More Songs Than US Version www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/Live:_A_Case_For_Song
So many of Elvis' songs are more meaningful when performed solo, with only one or two instruments. This is a good example and so is "Accidents Will Happen."
@MaeNotEast. When I was about thirteen I had a little transistorradio under my pillow. Veronica was the name of my favorite hot pirate-radio-station.It was a ship in the middle of the NorthSea. Your story is much better and Costello's version of the story makes the name unforgettable isn't it?
Hope for your mom he did this one on that Whish I Was There party. @ your fades: I'm glad it fades in 23 times also, but don't blame me, I'm only the uploader. The music didn't fade at all and that makes it an evergreene isn't it?
I always hated my name. Some of us are just never happy. lol So what to you think? Costello's music is pretty diverse and his voice is definitely different. I liked his early stuff, but never really got into him until an ex made me a tape (argh - dating myself) and I'd listen to it in the car on the long commute to work. Got rid of the ex and got some Costello CDs of my own. heheh
The fade outs are really annoying. I feel like it 23 clips pasted together. My mom has a habit of going to parties where she meets people and has no real idea of who they are. She went to one about 3 years ago and Elvis was on the piano. Were about 100 people there so she had a nice chat with him.
My grandmother just turned 94. She was the one who named me Veronica ♥️
So powerful and such depth of emotion. Best singer of the modern era in my opinion.
Totally agree.
@@ianhollingsworth2638 Me too....
Co-written with Macca, of course.
Oh yes, phenomenal for sure, but I'm gonna raise my hand and say it's arguably Reginald Dwight, closely followed by the much maligned and derided Philip Collins.
What can you say. The most underplayed star of our time.
Fabulous lyricist, singer, song writer….unlikely rock star. That said, for what it’s worth easily in my top 5…a unique poet in every way
Hard not to cry whenever I hear this. Reminds me of my dear auntie who passed away this year. I remember visiting her in the nursing home after the Alzheimer's took control. To see someone you love like that can only break your heart.
Simply outstanding……what a lyricist…..
With a little help from Sir Paul...
And also thank Sir Paul
Every time I watch another video...I fall in love with this man all over again. He touches my soul with his voice.
Me also....
I've had a crush on him since '78...Musical of course!
Moving version of one of my favorite songs. I dedicate this song to my mom who died on 4/24/12.
I wasn’t even prepared for how good this is tbh
In this song and in Allison Elvis Costello shows a deep love and tenderness for vulnerable women. So beautiful and so anguished.
Elvis sung it deep it came from his heart. What a performance. Awesome.
Beautiful version of such a sad song. It makes me think of my mother. Thank you for sharing this.
Beautiful! This longer version is so emotional and what a voice!
This is Everything. ❤️
I love this guy.
after I learned the back story on this song it always brings tears to my eyes now, it was written for his grandmother who had Alzheimer's just so sweet of him to do
When I saw the video of this song when it was first released, I instantly loved it. I figured it had something to do with alzheimers.
I named my daughter Veronica after my grandmother
I never even knew that’s beautiful thanks 🙏 for telling
Thank you SO much for that, both my parents developed dementia, possibly Dad's due to (in his mind 'posh') alcohol but Mum went down HARD. I was staying at their place, so helped when I could. The worst part was when she KNEW it was happening.

This is still fantastic.
Outstanding! Outstanding!! Outstanding in any way!!!
Nothing else to say than the greatest Bravour for the Performance and Lyrics.
Always loved this. Spent a lot of time in an Alzheimer’s facility, watching someone’s plight get dimmer everyday. Excellent phrasing in this song.
I Love You Mister Elvis Costello. 💔🙏🙏🙏
An Absolutely Brilliant Collaboration Between Two Genius Gents. Mr Costello Thank You For This Amazing Great Classic And Also Many More Majestic Memories You Have Given Us All.Your Autobiography Is Just Belting Cheers.

I love his slow songs best. His voice is so soulful and honest.
I love him.
That takes a lot of talent to pull that off in such a way as this and make it sound so good.
Elvis Lives!
Such a beautiful song. My grandmother had bad Alzheimer's.
elvis the great !
What an artist!
Utterly beautiful
I have no words... no verb can express my thoughts... a heartfelt thank-you for this upload.

This version is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Love the arrangement especially the piano parts. Is that Steve Nieve on piano?

Yes I think its him with a strange pudding bowl hair cut
The one and only.
Though I like the harmonies on the original, it's too overproduced imo, so this is indeed a great different version
Let's not forget Sir Paul, who Elvis credits for smoothing out the chorus and making the bridge more dreamlike.
Let us salute the camera man (or woman). Well done.
by fuck he's good !
I used to have the whole concert on DVD, but some asshole stole it! WTF?! I need to buy this one again! Great artist!
More than any other individual, Steve Nieve had much to do with Elvis' musical success,
So many of Elvis' songs are more meaningful when performed solo, with only one or two instruments. This is a good example and so is "Accidents Will Happen."
Timeless name
Professor Nieve 😍
@tiarasin2008 you got that damn right

This arrangement is so much more moving than the one on Stunt.
Is that the radio station they made the movie about - Pirate Radio a.k.a. The Boat That Rocked?
"When the world was the street where she lived"
