It honestly feels like we missed a game in between Origins and Odyssey where Layla joins the Assassins, meets her team, becomes friends with Olivia and which ends with them learning about the Staff and pointing them in the direction of the Eagle Bearer.

@@the0thersyde725 That's why UbiSoft has all those comics that take place in the Modern era, so they don't have to address them in the games.
In fact, there have been some teams who outright said that they tend to focus less on the overarching narrative, including character growth, in favor of presenting an interactive experience focused on historical locations.
Basically, outside of people like Darby, who no longer works at UbiSoft, the rest of the company is very open about not giving a fuck about making a consistent, coherent story so long as they get to crank-out history-based RPGs in the end.

At long last Loki got the last laugh.
Something that immediately jumped out at me when you said Alethia’s moniker: Goddes of Truth, I immediately found it so important due to the fact that Loki is the God of lies, and together they become the embodiment of “true manipulation”, using lies to manipulate the truth.
What’s more, Loki/Basim seems to have taken a move from the Reverse Flash’s old play book, he is the only character that’s managed to see the future, and actually manipulates it so that he gets what he wants, no one has ever managed to pull this off this well, to my knowledge.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the DLC‘s, it’s going to be a bloodbath

The thing is, everything Layla did do and learn did lead her to that moment, and that is a very key plot point, it is basically the whole reason for the Isu plots of Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla
I think the line was alluding to a sort of deterministic viewpoint that Layla has been very specifically directed and manipulated to end up in just the right place and just the right time to drop the staff where Basim would fall
That is the only reason Basim would guide her into going through Eivors memories, instead of just, telling her where to go

    • @Gameservatory
      @Gameservatory 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Agreed. Though I suspect ATA's point isn't so much that the line on its face isn't true, rather that meta-textually its clear the writers from Origins to Odyssey weren't cooperating to tell the story as concluded in Valhalla. Had there been any forethought, both Origins and Odyssey would have properly foreshadowed a more nuanced version Aletheia and perhaps hinted at Loki's influence as well. Imo, every effective story shows its cards just a little; its a great way to engage the audience and make those who notice the foreshadowing feel clever. It's pretty apparent that Origins' & Odyssey's teams weren't cooperating in this regard.

    • @AccessAnimus
      @AccessAnimus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@Gameservatory Yep exactly, that's what I meant (although I put it in a joke-like form). What Josh says is correct, what Layla did (more than what she learnt imho) *did* technically bring her to that moment and that place, but it's more like "the plot wanted her to be there" rather than having a more consistent flow of events bringing her there, with proper foreshadowing like you said. In that case it would have made more sense for the player to realize that indeed Layla's whole path had been leading her to the Yggdrasil all along

I just wanted to say I've enjoyed this series so much! I already was so impressed by Darby and the narrative team for managing to fix the mess of the modern-day lore and present a compelling new direction. As well as to tie so many disparate threads across the series together. I am sad he is gone but he clearly adored the series and cared enough to satisfy long-time fans like me who have had to endure confusing directions (I was a Layla defender up until she killed a favourite character of mine from the books and comics, Victoria, and then seemingly taking Otso Berg off the board. Though seeing how they wrapped up her story, I am so thankful. The best way really for her to go) for so long because I care so much and I don't want them to ever abandon the modern-day or Isu plotlines. They are AC. I just really want them to go fully on board with this Basim storyline. It's so thrilling to actually have a playable Isu character!
Your videos made me appreciate and understand the finer details. Somehow, it wasn't until these videos that I realised Eivor's dream sequences were her interpretation of Odin's Isu memories. I remember being slightly annoyed at these dreams which I assumed were just retellings of Norse mythology and that's it, but my eyes were seriously opened when I started watching this series and I felt so stupid for not realising the whole time I was seeing a time in the Isu era.
Every time a new video has shown up on my feed I have eagerly clicked it. It feels nice to be in a space where so many hardcore fans like myself can discuss the story that has gripped us for years now. So thanks for all your hard work and it's appreciated!

The modern day definitely was not front and center in Odyssey...it only really became relevant at the end of the game and throughout the Atlantis DLC. Origins pulled you out of the animus multiple times during the story to have Layla discover more about the cave and Aya as well as learn that she had been lied to by Abstergo. The worst part of Origins' modern day was not following through with anything in the DLCs.
Yes, those messages were optional and very cryptic in Origins, but Odyssey should have at least referenced them (even if only in emails).

Based on the final words from Layla where they are talking about finding a timeline where Desmond didn’t sacrifice himself I suspect the finale of this new plot line is to bring Desmond back.
I don’t yet fully understand Loki’s goals my mind is racing but the secret scene where he can sit by the camp and sees Eivor smiles at him and he smiles back I suspect his intentions are good. We shall see, they actually got me super interested in the modern day storyline again tho - I just hope in the next game they give us a few extra breaks from the animus I know people complained about that but I think if you want to tell a consistent story that method is much better then the current one where we get 15 minutes sort of mid-way through the opening and then 15 - 30 minutes at the end.

Oo I have been waiting with bated breath for this video since the last! Love your lore analysis, ATA.
You do such a great job outlining the treacherous narrative mountain left for Darby & his team to reconcile in Valhalla. Honestly, I'm impressed at how much they were able to make work, not just technically, but as if these seemingly discordant threads were part of some greater intent (they should have brought Darby on to write Rise of Skywalker lol).
It didn’t fully register upon first play-through that the Nornir are humanoid manifestations of the Yggdrasil digital intelligence working on behalf of of the user - brilliant. Round of applause to Darby & co for using these visual allegories to connect the lore back to Norse mythology, while resolving so many lingering mysteries in AC lore.

Also noticed when watching how much the Grey resembles Revelation’s dark room corridor Desmond can be found in before unwinding his personage from Ezio’s & Altair’s.
What excites me most about your analysis is that, either on their own or with help of PoE’s, humans figured out a way to read the calculations of time by inventing the Animus, even without having the sixth sense. That’s a powerful & inspiring message about human ingenuity… and something that would certainly piss off Juno to no end :P
Question for you now that Layla’s journey is over. Odyssey at least, uh, _attempted_ to contextualize the fantasy realms as training. But what was the point of Curse of the Pharaohs? That DLC, while beautiful, feels really disconnected from the lore to the point of contradiction. Were there subtle inferences to the point of the Apple & the violent havoc it caused in Thebes from your research?
PS- as a huge AC fan & as a game designer myself, I’ve thought a lot about AC’s writing over the years. I recently released a video exploring how writing influences the context of gameplay, using the plotting of AC: Unity as a lens to better understand that influence. Would love to hear your thoughts on it should you have in any interest in checking it out:

Ahhh thank you so much! Comments like this are fuel for our fire!
Darby actually said on Twitter that the game would have provided us work for months and he really wasn't wrong :P But yeah, we also admire the creative team's work to make all the various lingering threads make sense in a cohesive story.
We also loved the use of the Nornir - that says *a lot* about what they represent without actually ever saying it, that was really ingenious ^^
As for your question... we'd say that every time they are trying to find new (or old) justifications to put fantasy / magical elements, and for Curse of the Pharaos the justification was that it was all an illusion created by the Apple, both the "shadows" of the pharaohs that appeared in the real world and also the afterlife realms that Bayek could access... but even with that DLC there were some issues, like Bayek being able to bring tangible objects to and from those realms (which they amended in Valhalla)
Thanks for sharing the link! We're going to try and have a look at it as soon as possible! We're super busy prepping some cool stuff for next week but we'll do our best for sure! The production value looks really nice from the very first moments in the video!

@@AccessAnimus Haha well I can see just how right he was. I plan to go back and play Valhalla with this series in mind. It was always one of my favorite parts of AC, going back to see all the pieces I missed the first go-around.
Yes! Visual inference is so powerful and too often left under-discussed. I like that it pushes me to learn more about the real-life mythology too. I suppose those who were already familiar had a leg up in this regard.
That's good insight, thanks for answering. Can you help me understand what you mean by how Valhalla amends bringing objects to and from the simulations? I think I'm forgetting something from Valhalla (though I vaguely remember leaving Odin's axe in the Valhalla simulation... but I don't remember how this was justified).
"We're super busy prepping some cool stuff for next week but we'll do our best for sure! The production value looks really nice from the very first moments in the video!"

This was a great series appreciate all the hard work! A few questions I had when I finished the game:
    1) Has Basim/Loki been manipulating events with Layla since Origins? Is he responsible for the hidden truth messages Layla received all in an effort to bring her to that moment?
    2) Why is Basim/Loki seemingly referred to as the master of the calculations by the Nornir, what makes him so special or is that something any Isu trapped in the grey could do?
    3) Couldn't the Reader/Desmond have warned Layla she was being manipulated in that moment before she touched the device? Why did he wait until afterwards to appear?
    And most importantly,
    4) What the hell has Kassandra been up to since the end of the historical events in Oddysey and how does that tie in with all this (if that's even what is planned lol)

    • @kazekagejichujisoo7838
      @kazekagejichujisoo7838 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. most likely but we don't know
      2. Basim/Loki is an isu so naturally he knows how to deal with the calculations and isu technology
      3. No. Everything is fated to happen and plus, Desmond wanted Layla to be in the grey with him. he even tells her that he predicted and expected her arrival
      4. Kassandra was used as a pawn in Loki and Aletheia's plan to resurrect Loki/Basim. Essentially, Aletheia made it her role to hold onto the staff until Layla would arrive and come and pick it up, so that in 2020 Layla as the fated Heir of Memories would fulfill her role in delivering the staff to Loki/Basim.

@@kazekagejichujisoo7838 good answers thanks I appreciate that. Although I have to say the answer to 4 isn't satisfying to me considering Kassandra was alive through pretty much every historical period that assassin's Creed will touch upon in the future and to have made such a character that could live through every time period only in order to handoff the staff just seems lazy to me. But then again it is Oddysey we're talking about so maybe there was some sort of plan for Kassandra that the writers aren't going to pursue

On the face of it, that might refer to so many of her friends and allies being killed in the battle, but I suspect it's referring to the Battle of Ethandun, which hasn't happened yet, but would have to occur within a few months of the game's ending in order to match up historically. Alfred was hiding in the western swamps for a few months, until he was able to assemble his army and win a great victory over the Danes and force them out of the south-western half of England.

Maybe someone has already put this forth, I didn't read the comments, but after playing Dawn of Ragnarok could Desmond be Baldur? Or more so be carrying his conscience as a sage? I know Desmond's son, Elijah, was one of the Aita sages and the odds of them both carrying two different Isu consciences is astronomical but, Baldur stated he was going to bring light back into the world. Desmond or The Reader here, appears to Layla as a being of pure intense light. There are multiple references made in Dawn of Ragnarok of Baldur and his light. In Odin's vision of Baldur sitting on Hel's throne he gives a small quick smirk reminiscent of Desmond circa ACll. I wonder....Anyways a fan of this series going back almost 10 years I'm very thankful the devs and writers tried to make sense of all the lore and storylines we've gotten over the last few games. In my opinion Layla was fine in Origins but i found her unbearable in Odyssey
I was one of the people who didnt like Odyssey so that didnt help . Also i find the scene in Fate of Atlantis where Layla kills Victoria. Hillarious because Victorias body ragdolls all over the place
It will be interesting to see what Loki has planed now that he has escaped from the Ygdrasil device
Also the fact that Layla and Desmond are now reading alternate timelines via the calculations raminded me of a dumb theory i had as a teenager
You know the game For Honor
Well i thought that. Games campaign was an alternate timeline where Desmond, didnt sacrifice himselfin 2012 and that games world was a result of that. Apart of that theory was that the campaigns badguy the Warlord Apollion was trying to rebuild the Templar order with the BlackStone Legion.

Yeah there's so much I can't figure out from the ending of this game. Did Layla actually send that message to them from the Grey, or did Basim and Alethia fabricate it the same way they fabricated the messages they were sending to Layla in the beginning? If Layla did send the message, why didn't she include the part about how Basim's master plan was to trap her in there and escape, and watch out for that shifty bastard?
Also, what do Sean and Rebecca actually know about Basim? Do they know he is Loki reincarnated, or do they only know he's "Basim the Hidden One"? Even if they don't know that he's actually Loki, they're presumably aware of how he randomly betrayed Eivor and Sigurd seemingly out of nowhere before being locked up in that place, so they've *GOT* to know that he's not trustworthy.
I bet anyone in these comments $50 that the next game opens with Basim murdering William Miles, because Sean and Rebecca were dumb enough to set a face-to-face meeting.

25:14 Okay, someone elaborate for me in case I'm missing something, but does this mean that the Animus technology utilizes Isu tech? Juno referencing Clay being "there" with her makes me think back to Revelations when Clay's consciousness had been trapped within the Animus when Desmond was reduced to a comatose state. Am I missing something, or does this just have to do with the "digital lattice" connecting to human technology?
ALSO, can ANYONE tell me that I'm not the only one who finds that squirrel by the cabin a little odd? I don't know if he's supposed to be a reference to the flyting squirrel in Jotunheim, but he stares at Layla/Basim and seems to gesture at them before walking away as they approach. I keep thinking he's taking me somewhere before remembering I can't explore the area.

So I'm watching the video and you said Layla was an inch away from becoming a full villain😄 I can't help but agree with that because after she cripples Burg she starts talking and all of a sudden I think to myself "Is she monologuing right now?" It was kind of weird I must say because I didn't expect her to do that and Burg was supposed to be World-Class mercenary/killer/tactician who taking out Assassins yet Layla does him in with not much training or experience. I honestly feel as though Assassin's Creed as a series went off a bit was back when Unity came out I don't think contributed to the bigger story also with Syndicate.

Wait.... Juno in Unity also says not Clay will leave the Grey :O? All those years back i had this theory in my mind (not only me, there are others who also believed it) but when Clay is in the Grey he only can be with Desmond. So Clay really loaded himself up into Desmonds Mind at the end of Revelations as he hugged him. I know it does not make a difference because Desmond killed himself at the end of 3 but knowing that Clay might have survived could make a difference because Desmond is now searching for a way to safe the Earth but refusing to free Juno.

Hi! The Yggdrasil device shows red light in modern day because of Basim's plan to bring Layla and Hermetes staff to the Yggdrasil vault. Basim overwhelmed the device with calculations in order to create issues on th eearth, like the aurora borealis and earthquake, so the color changed from blue to red to show the device's reaching its limit. I dunno about Sigurd, maybe his isu dna protected him from death.

It's just the same Aita/Juno story again now (Can we please have more good Isu besides Minerva and Jupiter). I really hope instead that the next modern day protagonist is a Templar, since they know better than to trust Isu. Or at the very least have it where we see both sides team up to stop the bigger threat, like they did in the comics against Juno.
I also disagree what happened with her was a good redemption since she hasn't done anything, and also hate how they retconned her murdering her friend to "the staff made me do it." Now if her and Desmond doing this leads to being able to manipulate time, both giving far more choices in the game but also things like affecting the Modern World (bringing certain characters back for instance) then it'd be interesting and good.

Funny enough, Ubisoft Quebec…like Loki…got the last laugh! Now AC is solely their far superior hands of narrative and game mechanics, so while Valhalla did do a great job with modern day unlike every other game they have made, it is now the Odyssey team to carry this franchise out in the right way!!

I really really hope that we get to rid the world of both alaethia and bassim. They’re just as bad and self centered as all
    Isu.

@K.O.G.Fanstarks1610 I don’t know. Seem like they only cares about them selves, at least through the perspective of Valhalla. It’s also hinted at when hyrokkin and alaethia spoke to each other in the jotun ark

@K.O.G.Fanstarks1610 yes, of course. Family is super important to me. When alaethia and Juno spoke, Juno said something like you’re for the humans now, but with time you won’t be. Something along those lines. Her and loki / basims plan were to survive all along at any cost, so they sacrificed Layla, to be reunited. The only “good” isu so far in my opinion is Minerva

@K.O.G.Fanstarks1610 none the less, I love the isu lore. It’s super interesting 😃

@K.O.G.Fanstarks1610 I’ve yet to play the first few games. I started with black flag. I’m going to play the old games at some
Point. Yes, the isu lore is super duper interesting and so is the Templar lore. I really enjoy that we get to see the beginning of the Templar order.
