    Darby is a national treasure. The stuff he and the creative team did with additions to the ac lore and crafting a thematically rich experience has to be appreciated. I hope more fans warm up to Valhalla as the years go by, as it does contain a LOT of what made the og's great and crafts such an emotional roller coaster of a journey. Valhalla's narrative has now opened so many doors for future AC games. I just hope that it's not all undone by the next game's writers who decide the things that actually make sense within the lore don't fit what they feel should be how things happen, and retcon what has been established and re-strengthened by Valhalla, especially after what happened with Odyssey.

    I disagree with Darby regarding the present day. He said that he wanted the present day to be more integrated into the game to avoid having to leave the past to be in the present, and then re-enter the animus because according to the players it was frustrating. For me, personally I never found it frustrating to play the part of the present as it was an important part of the plot of the conflict between assassins and templars. It's the only thing I don't agree with Darby on. Then the rest of the interview I found very interesting the details that he gives about how they were doing the project.

      I agree that the present day is intriguing, but Darby isn't referring to us few that actually enjoy it. He's referring to the masses that just want to play in the historical setting. The players that don't actually appreciate the AC lore. He was saying he was trying to integrate the present day without forcing a full-stop to the action in the historical setting so that those players who are not interested in it may actually take time to appreciate it, rather than just get frustrated with the forced pause and jarring removal into the rather stagnant (in comparison) present day.

      @danielcharland1374 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes and no from what I gather. While it is creating a simulation, that simulation isn't created from nothing, but drawn from a possibility in the calculations of existence. However, as these possibilities are infinite as far as we know, there would be little practical difference. It's the Matrix in practice, but deviates in concept regarding how it arrives at the results if I understand correctly.

    Wish they would just decide on one cannon character doesn’t matter if male or female. I feel like it divides the fan base up. Personally I like male Eivor because I feel like the voice acting for him was 1000x better and I played as both.

    • @m3rl1on
      @m3rl1on 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think that's the order from the higher up, and Darby was just finding a possible explanation in order for that option to make sense, lore-wise.

    • @KillswitchSaint
      @KillswitchSaint 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@m3rl1on I understand that women in video games are under represented and I have no problem with a main character of a video game being female as long as the voice actor and writing team do a great job portraying that characters and bringing that character to life. Look outside of ubi like Tomb Raider fantastic team behind everyone absolutely delivers, Last of us 2 no problem the teams took care of that as well but at least we all know those are cannon characters, there’s no division in the fan base for those actions. If they wanted female eivor as cannon why add the male version to the game? Gamers don’t fight over genders (least from what I’ve seen) we fight over random stuff either be romance options or choices throughout a game. Odyssey was meant for kassandra no doubt between the story, voice acting and just the overall feel of the game was meant for her no issue there, I just feel the story (in my opinion) that Valhalla was written for male eivor, his voice acting like I said was 1000x better than the female version, the story overall felt like it was for him. Especially being a descendant of Odin and Sigurd being Tyr, on top of that the option to romance Randvi just cause Sigurd is out doing his own thing and not caring for her. Just overall (to me at least) felt more of male eivor story. But if they went ahead and said that female eivor was cannon I wouldn’t have a problem with it. The only problem I have is the grey area they leave these wonderful characters in. We all love this franchise and want it to be taken care of with love and respect not only for the franchise itself but for its fans and to leave characters in a grey area just upsets me.

    • @vaazon
      @vaazon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@KillswitchSaint what you feel about who should be canon or not is subjective, what voice you prefer is subjective. Game was designed for Eivor not Odin. I won't even say female Eivor because it's disservice to the protagonist. The entire Layla trilogy was supposed to be female centric - Aya, Kassandra, Eivor. Just because you like the performance of Odin voice it doesn't mean that developers and director wanted male viking. Eivor is only female name. Varinsdottir means Varin's daughter. In comics and lore female is canon. In their office the post developers put on the wall is with Eivor, not Odin. And it was 10 thousands times explained that Ubisoft executives force male protagonist to be available. Because those executives live in the past and think AC wouldn't sell so well without dudebros having the possibility to play male character. And yes it sucks to have gender choice especially that the marketing team forces noncanon character on the cover. It divides fandom with constant fights who is better. Makes unnecessary fights. Toxicity is high. It's tiring. And people like us waste time on this discussion while executives laugh and swim in money.

    • @vaazon
      @vaazon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@KillswitchSaint one thing worth mentioning regarding the reincarnations of Odin and Tyr is that the story heavily hints at Eivor to be canonically female (apart from her name). All reincarnations share the same gender and are similar in looks and that's why Basim was so interested in Sigurd because he knew that Sigurd is Tyr. Meanwhile he didn't want to kill Eivor for the entire game until very end because Eivor was an exception to this rule. Eivor was female and looked nothing like Odin (while male Eivor is 1:1 Odin from memories) and that's why Basim didn't realize it until late game. Hence during their final fight Basim says "For too long I stared at the sun! It blinded me to the truth. That it was you. It was you I wanted all along." He wouldn't sit and chat with Odin at campfire. He would fucking kill him if he knew. Basim despises Odin.

    My issues with the game
    With the whole gender choices maybe the Layla Avatar thing might have worked better just cause from what we know about sages with Aita is that most of them had heterochromia and they could only be born male this kinda just makes sage a bit more convoluted than necessary, besides Darby is a fantastic character writer and the gender choices and dialogue options (which still don’t make sense) kinda limit is ability to make a good character driven story, Basim returning I’m not on board with because 100% he should totally be dead or at least is body a millennium of no sustenance and on top of that a 8 year constant barrage of heat and radiation that killed Layla’s body with a couple minutes of exposure when she dropped the staff, The Yggdrasil I’m okay with the Isu are clairvoyant and use technology to boost that ability makes sense. The sagas on the other hand (I didn’t really like, I preferred sequences and the RPG trilogy dropping them never made sense to me) didn’t really work for me I get why the story was structured that way as a writing decision I just didn’t see the appeal, I liked the Animus Anomalies though

    • @RaRmAn
      @RaRmAn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those with hererochromia are all Aita, he was special case, the rest of them were reborn only once and seems like they could be born as anyone. as for the gender choice, here it makes some sense, because in reality Eivor was always Female, you just choose what is animus going to display, reason for that is certain amount of Odin's DNA mixed with Eivor's DNA, in Odyssey it made no sense at all with the DNA on spear.

    Idk, the idea of the different Isu clans specifically based on that regions mythology seems like a downgrade of the Isu as a whole. I mean the entire idea of the Isu in the beginning was that human mythology was a vague and inaccurate interpretation of the Isu civilization. All we knew is that after they died out the memory of their civilizations was constantly diluted, mutating into the modern human lore. This is why we had Adam and Eve with Minerva in the AC2 Truth video or how Minerva was just one of her names and not her original, real name. I feel like directly basing these Isu 'clans' on mythology really takes away a lot of things that made them interesting, limiting what you can do with them instead of creating opportunities, like how they made the Isu less sci fi and more stereotypical gods. Also if Adam and Eve existed, is there a Isu Clan that represents the Abrahamic mythology? How is that going to work?
    Overall I feel that all the reveals we've gotten about the Isu in the recent years just took away most of what made them interesting. They went from what was essentially an interesting and mysterious anomaly to explore to what are essentially mythological gods with vague magic that pretends to be technology. And that is a downgrade if you ask me.

    • @AdityaSathya
      @AdityaSathya 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You also have to understand that in order to expand stories, you have to open it up more. You cant retain the mystery in a franchise that has been running for 14 years. To dilute the rich cultures of egypt and the norse to just the capitoline triad is limiting. I am fine with this retcon due to how additional weight has been given to existing lore.

    • @glxjchaos7775

    • @DariusVladimirAuditore
      @DariusVladimirAuditore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AdityaSathya I'm not suggesting these mythologies to be diluted because the Isu as a whole shouldn't even resemble human mythology. Even though human mythology was inspired by Isu history it is not accurate to what the Isu are. There shouldn't be an Isu named Odin that would look like an Odin and act like an Odin just how Jupiter wasn't the king of gods, but a scientist.

      @DariusVladimirAuditore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@owenlewis9478 i mean sure, there is logic behind it at first glance, but is it good logic? And does it add anything good? Not really. For one if these visions connect Eivor directly to the Isu memories I the animus should show what he really sees not what he would interpret. Sure they couldn't show the Isu as they were so they had to do something else, and this is what leads to my second issue, that the mythical arcs take away more than they add. Yet again the Isu are relegated to fantastical gods and the sci fi aspect is stripped away even more. Like I said, there is logic, but not good logic. Plus, let's face it, they just wanted norse mythology in the game because they are not confident in making a realistic viking game. So they added this not because it ads anything significant to the game, but because norse mythology is popular. And they had to cook up lore reasons to justify this like eivor is high or eivor is interpreting stuff. To me at least the mythical arcs feel forced and not a good way to explore the Isu.

You can have non-Indo-European gods be the Isu of other regions though. For example, Amun and Zeus are NOT diverged from the same proto-god, so they could've been different Isu in the AC story (though that ship has sailed it seems?). Same with say the Japanese gods, the Japanese storm god, Susanoo, is not related to the Indo-European storm god, so he could've been another Isu. ETC.

      Odyssey was an awful AC game, the team should focus with their new IP immortal Pheonix Rising or a new IP. Montreal should focus on AC games.

      Montreal, or it might have been Ashraf mostly, does not know how to invest in modern day nor make an actual complete game...

    5:35 But that's exactly what AC lore says . Isu had turned into legends and Gods and religions had been based on them by different civilizations giving the same Isu different names. Bit of lore breaking there

      That doesn't mean that every mythological leader of a pantheon is Jupiter, that breaks the identity of these mythological figuresnwnd reduces them to a monolith. Also Juno said that humans were also bred for war, which is something only in a divided world would be needed with different clans and countries.

      @@basilofgoodwishes4138 I think you're right about the humans being made for war. That proves that there were multiple civs or atleast communities.

    It’s such bad writing.
    Do all the people who are reincarnations of Gods know they are? Basim obviously knows he is Loki as he mentions his son being taken away by a dear friend to Eivor. But Sigurd doesn’t clearly know he is Tyr. Does Halfdan know he is Thor? Eivor has no idea he is Odin. Does Faravid? Does Svala?
    Why do some remember and some not.
    In fact, why don’t they all recognize each other as they look identical?
    If they know, why would any of them care for dying if they know they will be reincarnated and be reborn immediately after? All the 9 ISU weren’t just randomly reincarnated together once at 870AD. They’ve been reincarnating over and over again since 75000BCE. It’s terrible writing.

      It's all explained in the game:
      Only Loki remembers being an Isu once, the others do not, in fact they are so different from their old selves, you can say that they are different people altogether.
      Those who remember lived similar lives to their precursors and thus their memory and identity triggers, hence when Sigurd lost his arm, he remembers more of his live as Tyr but not fully, because it was the betrayal that cut off his arm, not Fulke.
      They do not recognize all each other, but do have a feeling they know them very well, but that is not enough for them to fully remember who these people were.
      They weren't reincarnating over and over again, only this once and they all except for Svala and Basik failed to return. Not bad writing, it's good writing, once you pierce everything together.
