Easily the greatest match I've ever seen. Federer at the top of his game, and Safin putting it all together. Full match in HD. Thanks much AO_TV!!! BTW, this is when the AO was played on the Rebound Ace surface. VERY fast. They've slowed it way down since then. Watch the speed of these shots! Awesome!
safin was my favorite player and i really wanted him to win this match, which made it the most exciting and most stressful match i've ever seen. i still can't get over that match point he saved in the 4th set, hitting that perfect lob under that kind of pressure. he tried the lob several times in the match and it rarely worked out, but facing a match point he somehow pulled it off perfectly. i've watched this match several times and it still stresses me out a bit every time i watch it.
What an emotional thriller.. so many roars, screams and Safin talking himself my goodness it’s absolutely fantastic to watch)) that wasn’t just a grand slam semifinal, that was fight, that was battle, that was war... they don’t wait for mistakes, both of them just go attack attack attack, winners winners winners, sure there a lot of unforced errors, but that ping pong tennis shooting... amazing!!! One of the greatest matches ever... legendary Marat Safin, and still playing legend Roger Federer!!! Old but gold)
Amazing match, even after the match ends. Roger Federer when he waves to the crowd as he strides off the court and he receives that ovation... is just chilling. It's like he makes time stand still, even after a very human defeat you still know that he's still a different kind of legend. As for Marat Safin, a magnificent legend of his own... and although not as long lived, he too emits that similar timeless aura whenever he carries his presence around events. Very, very special... a spiritual experience.
After this match, I walked up to my old man and thanked him for doing what he did .,lest I wouldn’t be in this world to watch and EXPERIENCE such AMAZING things❤️😎❤️👍
agreed this is some of the best pure hitting I have seen two tennis players play. Until the 2008 Wimbledon this was the best match I have seen on tv. You can still argue that it is better than 2008 wimbledon because how close the sets were on the high level of tennis for over 4 hours.
@@derrickc1353 2008 wimbledon was just a great match in terms of emotion and meaning. Look at the numbers. Federer made a lot of unforced errors, much more than usual. Nadal won Wimbledon 2008 through resistance, or, to be more precise, through Federer's errors... people confuse exciting match with a well-played match. Federer didn't play well in the 2008 Wimbledon final, and that's not my opinion, look at the statistics. Federer was errant in that final. It only lasted 5 sets because of his service, but was not a high quality match by Federer. Nadal, on the other hand, played very well... his best on grass

safin was one of my 2 favorite players to watch and i never liked federer much, so this was one of the most exciting and probably the most stressful match i've ever watched. it looked like it was over when he was down 2 mini breaks in the 4th set tie breaker. hewitt was my other favorite player to watch, so the final wasn't nearly as stressful, it was just exciting. tennis today is boring and doesn't even compare to those days. there were so many exciting players/matches back then and most of them are no longer playing. agassi and sampras were still really exciting to watch at the end of their careers, there was hewitt, safin, roddick, federer and quite a few others. seemed like nearly every quarterfinal and further in the majors was always an exciting match between 2000 up to maybe 2010. to me that was the golden age of tennis and it will never be that exciting again.

Always thought this was one of the finest matches of tennis I have ever seen. Marat Safin was a devil in his tenacity!1. I guess he wanted to win for his birthday!!! So happy it is available in full.!
after the season 2004 and special after the US OPEN 2004, federer was even with the age 23 unbeatable like a tennis god. I never expected that safin would win this match. I never forget federer AMAZING tennis status in that time from 2004-2007 and i say that as a Djokovic fan and a federer sympatisant from wimbledon 2008 until French open 2011.
Personally I thought Federer’s serving, specifically his first serve percentage, let him down in this match. Still played great otherwise, but that one aspect cost him the match in my opinion
If I had Isner's serve, Safin's backhand, Roger's forehand, Sampras' volley, Djokovic's return, Nadal's mental, Kyrgios touch, Ferrer's conditioning, Alcaraz's drop shot, I would have been number one. Wake up buddy the alarm is on, time to go to work.
among my personal top 5 matches, IN ANY ERA...and Ive been watching professional tennis since the early 70s. Apparently, a lot of people forgot that Marat Safin was just as talented a shotmaker as his opponent, here. But I attribute a lot of that forgiveable denial to the fact that Federer VERY RARELY allowed his ooponents to stick around as long as Safin did in this match.
Vijay Amritraj said just before this match, “Marat Saffin at his best is better than Roger Federer at his best.” He was spot on. At least for the game.
but Roger's fans will say that Federer lost because injured. Whenever he loses, they say he is injured. They never say he deserves to lose. We give sometimes credit to Safin (ao 2005 champion) and all his opponents who defeated him
What, this is actually the Nadal fans excuse lol. Its actually the haters who doesn't give credit to Federer's contemporaries, calling them weak era just because the guy dominated them. Agassi, Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, Davydenko etc etc are all great players, former no. 1's except the latter, and GS winners as well as masters.
tennis was so much more exciting back then. i don't even watch current tennis because most of the exciting players from this time are gone, and from the little i have seen there are nearly as many charismatic players that make the sport exciting like they did then.
@DeadMeat-7 I didn't start watching until agassi had a shaved head and roddick and hewitt were the upcoming stars. that was the golden era of tennis, today doesn't even compare in the slightest. safin was my favorite but he didn't play to his full potential often enough. as seen in this match, he could beat anyone when he was at the top of his game. or he could go out in the first or second round against someone i never heard of when he wasn't.
At the end "Roger Federer...is human after all", what these younger fans that cry Novak or Rafa is goat don't understand is that we and the entire tennis world never had a collective moment like we did with Roger Federer in 2004-2009 questioning whether or not he was even human. It may happen again with Jannik Sinner, but probably not.
the first match that made me a tennis fanatic was hewitt vs roddick quarterfinals, i think in the french open, 2000 maybe. hewitt pulled it off in an epic 5 set match. i was already a fanatic by the time this match came around and this was one of the most exciting and stressful matches ever. stressful because safin was one of my favorite players and i never cared much for federer. it looked like it was over for safin a couple times, especially when he was down 2 mini breaks in the 4 set tie breaker. by far the most emotional match for me.
1:36:33, Safin went with extra topspin for safe measure but Federer thought his desperate BH slice wasn't good enough and Safin will likely counter attack with pace and prepared his forehand grip accordingly. Missed the down the line because he didn't expect the extra topspin.
I purchased the DVD of this match after watching it in disbelief and was disappointed to hear the commentary was dubbed over the top by some randoms. Clearly Australia Ch7 won't give permission for their audio, or perhaps it was too awkward for AO to hear about My Kitchen Rules every two minutes.

@@juancarlosjuancarlos4629 This isn't Fed's era, it's like 5 eras later. And destroyed him in 2008 AO? Roger had two set points in the 3rd set (which he didn't convert), so it could have easily been 3-1. That aside, he had mono at the beginning of '08
Imagine telling a Federer fan before this match: Federer will win 16 more Grand Slams but he will lose this match and 3 other Grand Slam semifinals/finals after having a match point.
I saw Safin beat Hewitt live in the final. That boy could hit he ball hard - a real forerunner to today's players where the top players have a strong first serve and hit hard from both sides. With his talent and lack of obvious physical weaknesses I'm surprised he only won the two Slams. I guess his weakness was that he could sometimes be "mercurial".

But I attribute a lot of that forgiveable denial to the fact that Federer VERY RARELY allowed his ooponents to stick around as long as Safin did in this match.
This and the 2009 Rafa vs Verdasco semi are the two greatest Australian open match.
Australian open 2012 ??
What a match!!! What two great champs!!
Just watched this again today. Amazing! When that match was over you could see Safin realizing the effort that it takes to beat a G.O.A.T.
Safin always had a great game. Should have won more majors.
Safin left the game too soon. A true titan of tennis!
Nadal - Verdasco 2009 SF please!!

They gave it
Vijay Amritraj said just before this match, “Marat Saffin at his best is better than Roger Federer at his best.”
He was spot on. At least for the game.
Federer best was 2007. Not sure if Safin could beat Federer 07 on that court playing like at Safin's best.
OMG! Who disliked this?!
Roger ;-)
Ignore them!!
People that don't like offensive tennis, where points are won with aggressive play, rather than lost while trying to outlast each other.
what they shout on 30:05?
but Roger's fans will say that Federer lost because injured. Whenever he loses, they say he is injured. They never say he deserves to lose. We give sometimes credit to Safin (ao 2005 champion) and all his opponents who defeated him
@Shashank Thank You!!! He or SHE just needs to admit they don't like Roger.🤷🏾♂️
No. This is the #VamosBrigade argument, actually.
Savin toying with Federer, the big guy is amazing, you don’t see this too often
Safin , hello autocorrect overworking
Wow thanks for uploading! Amazing match! I didn't have access to watching tennis in 2005, so such a joy to be able to watch it now :)
tennis was so much more exciting back then. i don't even watch current tennis because most of the exciting players from this time are gone, and from the little i have seen there are nearly as many charismatic players that make the sport exciting like they did then.
This is the most exciting match of Federer's peak (2004-2007)
Thanks You so much for this incredible match. It makes corona lock down lees heavier.
At the end "Roger Federer...is human after all", what these younger fans that cry Novak or Rafa is goat don't understand is that we and the entire tennis world never had a collective moment like we did with Roger Federer in 2004-2009 questioning whether or not he was even human. It may happen again with Jannik Sinner, but probably not.
you are the one crying :)
Best match ever!
Great memories
This is what tennis should have been all these years, and not the sleep pill we've got now.
Sadly they prefer money over quality.
I prefer the golden mean.
Now that is a birthday to fight for. Very enjoyable match. TENNIS you got to LOVE IT>>>
Very please of Korda vs Rios from 1998. Thank you
Unless u r a big Korda fan its a shitty match to see. But hope u r able to watch it for yourself to see.
Super match, thanks AO to.
4:01:04. For me best serve motion ever ❤️
the first match that made me a tennis fanatic was hewitt vs roddick quarterfinals, i think in the french open, 2000 maybe. hewitt pulled it off in an epic 5 set match.
i was already a fanatic by the time this match came around and this was one of the most exciting and stressful matches ever. stressful because safin was one of my favorite players and i never cared much for federer. it looked like it was over for safin a couple times, especially when he was down 2 mini breaks in the 4 set tie breaker. by far the most emotional match for me.
I hope they will replay Wawrinka Djokovic AO 2013
What a match!
Federal on his knees loosing the match point😂

3:35:00 best point of the match. Thank me in advance.
2:11:48 why did they replay the point? Audience member yelled out?
1:36:33, Safin went with extra topspin for safe measure but Federer thought his desperate BH slice wasn't good enough and Safin will likely counter attack with pace and prepared his forehand grip accordingly. Missed the down the line because he didn't expect the extra topspin.
Next match - please upload classic Andy Roddick vs Younes El Aynaoui AO 2003 qf
3:36:26 Love you Marat!
2:25:57 you gotta love that scream
Two of the nicest guys, cleanest hitters- this is tennis to show a kid who is wondering what sport to take up
We watched Marat play Hopman Cup (arriving that day, still hung-over) this year. Super-Fed lost it when he changed shirt colour.
The destruction of the Hopman Cup is a crime that still hasn't been investigated.
Safin is the king
Back when Djokovic was a nobody, just first round cannon fodder for Safin
17 years old and first GS apperance. Half and year later he already was in GS final
@@milanvesovic1703 2,5 years later
Three years later Safin (number 86) beat Djokovic (number 3) on Wimbledon again. In the semi-final he lost of Federer.
@@wimgroart1870 and now it is year 2021. Djokovic didn’t lose single slam against once tennis goat Roger for 8.5 years
Roger was once goat, today Djokovic already broke 90% of his records and he is not stopping. Year 2020 he started with 37-0 at the age of 33. Fed was already old at the age of 26 when Djokovic destroyed him 3-0 in AO. Who would think that everything will change and Fed will retire as 3rd best player in his era
@@juancarlosjuancarlos4629 This isn't Fed's era, it's like 5 eras later. And destroyed him in 2008 AO? Roger had two set points in the 3rd set (which he didn't convert), so it could have easily been 3-1. That aside, he had mono at the beginning of '08
Imagine telling a Federer fan before this match: Federer will win 16 more Grand Slams but he will lose this match and 3 other Grand Slam semifinals/finals after having a match point.
what are the other matches?
Will this video remain after the live stream/premiere ends?
That was like watching a slugfest boxing match, then towards the end of the 12th round finally one goes down.
That backhand at the end finished it.
2:11:45 is this a let because someone yelled out? I can't detect anything else wrong
as i remember it
Safin refused to lose at any cost
Greatest match of all time
I saw Safin beat Hewitt live in the final. That boy could hit he ball hard - a real forerunner to today's players where the top players have a strong first serve and hit hard from both sides. With his talent and lack of obvious physical weaknesses I'm surprised he only won the two Slams. I guess his weakness was that he could sometimes be "mercurial".
one of the great matches of all time. this match and safin beating sampras at us showed he could beat anyone, anywhere. had he more discipline more slams would have come his way.
Crazy unreal match
Legend ❤
41:20 🎉
