30:12 I totally agree with you Paige. There were a few discussions on the knitting subreddit which talked about this exact issue with Petiteknit and her releasing the same pattern in very slightly different iterations. It's one of the reasons some knitters don't support her. That aside, your zipper sweater looks so pretty, I can't wait to see the FO!
Thank you! Ugh it’s hard cos don’t wanna be overly critical of Petite Knit but also frustrating. When I think of other smaller independent pattern designers I can’t imagine they’d do that sort of thing.
You two crack me up… your individual and joint reactions to yarn sales and purchases 😂… I was laughing out of sympathy! What person trying to be mindful of their hobby needs vs wants does not experience that mix of lust and horror when their favorite shop /brand is having a sale???😅
OMG Paige I feel your pain about the alpaca costing SO much money! I just ended up spending $100 on a sweater vest / slip over project in 100% alpaca and although I love it the guilt was real!! Sarah, that’s so frustrating about your button band. My trick for picking up stitches is just eyeballing it with a stitch market & breaking into quarters. So if the pattern says “pick up 100 stitches around the arm band” I put a marker at the top & bottom of the arm hole, then another marker at the 1/2 way point for front & back so I know I need to squeeze in 25 stitches between each marker. It’s not perfect but helps me more evenly space out my stitches & if I goof & need to rip back it only ever impacts like 25 stitches vs 100 which is less devastating & thus less likely for me to get fed up & put my project on time out! 😂 I love your podcast ladies - and Sarah I would love to see how you flip your slippers when you make the next video. Thanks again for posting! 👍👍
I knowwwww so expensive, but also, if I'm going to spend a million hours making something, I may as well make it a luxurious experience, right? (Come to me if you ever need to be enabled for a purchase lol)
twisted ambitions yarn is actually from oklahoma, which is where i'm from! very cool they've got his yarn all the way out in australia!! anyway great podcast as usual, sarah your button band is truly a cautionary tale for me because i'm making hive knits' cardigan with the double knit button band. i've never done one before and i'm kinda crap about counting lol. also it is refreshing seeing you both being so enthusiastic about knitting and yarns and stuff, so don't feel bad or weird about it. my friends and i are the same way. personally i think everyone else should just get on our level about the things they love lmao
I have a super simple patchwork scarf in the Morris Maya 12 ply and it is literally the love of my life! It’s so cozy and soft and I always feel so delightfully smug when people ask where it’s from and I get to say that I made it 😂 Paige’s zipper sweater has inspired me to cast on my own so the pattern chat was super helpful ❤
Sarah I don't know if you restarted the button band yet but to pick up the right amount of stitches, you could use the ratio of your stitch to row gauge on the vertical section (usually it's like 2 in every 3 rows) 1:1 on the horizontal section, and something in between on the diagonal, like 3:4. I did a seamed vertical button band once and the amount of mattress stitch was a little soul destroying. Good luck and can't wait to see the custom buttons!
You guys are so funny. Paige, even when sleepy, you're so bubbly and energetic. Sarah, so sad about your button band struggle 😢. Hopefully the fix isn't as painful as you expect!
Thank you! I’ve just accepted it’s all part of the process and a valuable lesson learnt. At this way hopefully others can loan from my stupid mistakes and save from them having to live them too 🤦♀️
One thing I appreciate about designers like Rebecca Clow and Andrea Gaughn is that they are considerate enough to put modifications, different weights, etc into the same pattern. I don’t mind paying a few dollars extra for a pattern that has more in it. But to pay for a separate pattern and the only change be something that a newbie could figure out with little to no effort (ie no shaping or sizing changes) would make me livid 😅
I know! I'm so apprecitive of designers that keep it fresh, rather that recycling the same pattern as something different. This is next level rort tho...
You guys are so cute!! Glad I found your podcast! I loooove the color of the essential beanie you’re working on! I have a dark green sock yarn coming in the mail for a musselburgh but it might have to become an essential beanie now because yours looks so good!
I’ve had that problem with cardigans. Your explanation may help. Also, I’ve wondered if I cast off too tightly. May try redoing those cast off. Maybe one stitch for every row is too many?
Yeh I don’t know how I managed to get it to look ok on one side but not the other 🤷♀️ psyching myself up to face it again, but picking up sts at a more reasonable ratio 🤞🏻
Sarah, did you adjust the needle size for the button band? The row gauge is different which is why it may have been too long? It's really lovely otherwise and I hope the fix isn't too bad!!
Yeh I went down to a 3.5mm needle, same as for the ribbing. I think if I had paid closer attention to my row gauge I might have worked out sooner that it would be a problem 🤦♀️ currently psyching myself up to attempt to fix it after a bit of time stuffed away 🤞🏻
I'm knitting on my Balloon sweater at the moment but with slightly less luxurious yarn 😅 so it's great to see how yours turned out, Paige! Sarah, I hope the new button band turns out better. Tbh the one you've already made doesn't look bad but I imagine the asymmetry of it is annoying.
@@twopurlsinapod Oh yeah I realise that, I was just being facetious! And it's totally reasonable to feel like knitting another one, it's just the right amount of easy and slightly complicated, imo!
OKAY SO you have no idea how much joy this comment brought me, haha! As I was putting it out, I literally told Sarah we needed it in view for the vibe. It's a Diptyque candle, with a Diptyque Holiday Carousel for their 190g candles. Mine is the one from 2021, but they release a very similar one every year. I know it's a splurge, but it's very pretty and it makes a regular appearance
Thanks for the info . 😊👍🏼 I looked online and seen an option available in California but not like yours. Maybe need to search for alternative because that item is just tol cute not to have in my livingroom. 😁
Loving all of your projects! I hope you can fix the button band issue :)... looking forward to seeing more projects from different designers, there are SO many amazing ones!
Ok bit late to the party, I am watching your latest episodes but then also watching back from the beginning. In terms of picking up stitches for button bands. I often don't trust that I have the correct row gauge for the pattern so always reference this video to work it out. th-cam.com/video/xHw9VEDE9YU/w-d-xo.html Its really simple and it means that you will pick up the right number of stitches for YOUR gauge. I do this in a similar way that Paige mentions, I divide the area into, side, back and side. With the back I pick up every stitch but on the sides, I generally pick up every 3 stitches out of 4. It means I only count once I have picked up the stitches and only to check they are the same number for both sides (and divisible by 4 if doing 2x2 rib). If I am out, I put a stitch marker where I think I need an extra stitch, then when I am doing my first row, I steal yarn from the neighbouring stitches to create that picked up stitch below. Gee I hope that makes some sense and perhaps helpful.
Hi Sarah and Paige! I subscribed ages ago, and I have finally caught up on your episodes. I am very much enjoying your exuberance about knitting and yarn 😊 A question for Paige - how did your Lykke ball winder go? I'm in the market for a new one, and wondering whether to splash out on a better quality winder. Sarah, what do you have?
Hello, hello! Welcome 🥰 The Lykke ball-winder is great! It took a quick youtube video watch to piece together, and now it's super easy. I did think it was quite a splash for a ballwinder, but I totally understand now why now that I've used it -- it's 100% rosewood, and the pieces have to work together beautifully for it to wind smoothly. I will say, I enjoy it for the craft and how aesthetically-pleasing and beautifully-made it is, but probably does require about 10% extra elbow grease to wind a skein compared to a plastic/factory-made one. Depends on what you're after! I'll ask Sarah, but I know my other mate bought a new, more affordable one off Amazon :)
Yep mine was just a cheapie off eBay or something, metal with green rubber coatings. It gets the job done but not nearly as beautifully so most of the time is folded away in a cupboard
@twopurlsinapod thanks ladies, I will have a look to see what I can find. Mine is usually stored as I don't have the room to keep it out all the time any way, and my main concern is that it winds a respectable ball without having to rewind three times and still not really succeeding 🤦♀️
Hi Ladies, Firstly love your podcasts. ❤️❤️❤️ Keep ‘em coming! But I must see that cardigan button band perfected. Perhaps check out Roxanne Richardson’s podcast. She has many TH-cam technique videos and in this situation perhaps check out: 1. Picking up stitches for a button band 16/8/17 2. Perfect button band edges and techniques (Technique Tuesday) 16/6/21 3. How to add ribbon to button bands for a great finish (Technique Tuesday) 27/4/23 She also has video/s on sewing on buttons on knitted fabric. Best wishes.
Hi! After the Doble tøflor inspiration I have made a felted bag. In Fritidsgarn. So much fun! Have a nice day and buy as much yarn as you can! 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶 //Annika aka @sticknytt 😊

Came to Melb for the weekend and just had to visit Maker Maker! Such a beautiful yarn shop! ❤

Yep I recon lean into loving your hobbies, and good luck with your button band!
Love your podcast, you two are so much fun! I am wearing my slippers non stop, they are so cozy. I have another pair on the needles too.
Yesss love this, can’t wait to see the next pair 🥰

Ooo I’ve been eyeing off the 12ply and it looks so squishy and luxe. Might have to happen…
I'm so glad the pattern chat helped!! Would love others to avoid my mistake ahah. (PS. BRB going to buy some Maya 12 ply - that sounds divine xx)
Always such a pleasure to watch your videos! I absolutely love both of your outfits!!
Thanks lovely 🥰
Lovely knits ladies and those trousers are amazing!

Yeh I think that’s the trick to be really considerate with my ratio. Either way it’s gonna be bleak but thanks for the motivation ☺️

Great podcast, learned about you from the knitting posse, cool to see an Aussie podcast. I am watching from NZ.
Hello! Thanks for watching 🥰 hope you’re having a good summer so far!
Fun podcast. Love all the laughter. So I need to know what is that fun candle action going on in the background? 😊
Thanks 🥰 I’ve no idea where Paige gets the twirly candle topper thing but it’s so pretty. I’ll try and find out for you 😊

Thanks for your posts. Love them. FYI for Fritid is pronounced like Free Teed. It means 'free time'. :)
Haha thanks for helping with my absurd pronunciation...
Chartreuse is a red head niche color 😂 its not just you Sarah! Now i need to make one for myself!
Haha thanks 🥰 Im looking forward to autumn so it can really shine.

That button band is so disappointing! Hopefully redoing it isn't torturous. The cardigan will be amazing when it is fixed though.
Thanks ☺️ I’m trying to be zen about it and just accepting this is part of the making process.
