I just want to go ahead and say I too got caught up in the "no oils, no butters" world and got a consultation from a stylist that follows these ladies and I will say my hair was sooo dry that my regular stylist (doesn't follow these trends) was like "what are you doing to your hair?" because my hair was dry. Narada is the perfect middle ground because he educates you on proper hair health but also doesn't act like he's the be all end all. His tips have been helpful, he's not recommending extremely expensive products

I honestly think the dryness is from the gels. Gels have ingredients in them that can have a drying effect on the hair. The hooded dryers are only helping to speed up that drying process as well. I definitely think adding leave ins and deep conditioners back into their regimen would help some folks out. I know it’s a case by case basis but yeah.

    • @keishalebray1996
      @keishalebray1996 ปีที่แล้ว +25

It’s cazy how they really thought that would work tho. All gels are drying in nature especially the ones with next to no oils. Weren’t they the ones who started the no oils no butters trend? If you are stripping the hair completely of oils, the hair has no barrier to prevent dryness. That’s why some people out here convinced oils are moisturizing. Oils and butters and such can be instrumental but only when used correctly and I don’t think they were doing that, or if they were, they were not cleansing properly. They always wanna do the scalp but not the hair legs 🦵 😂

My trichologists: no to dryers, no to styling products and no to wash and goes. Yes to weekly deep conditioners and daily leave in condtioners and detangers. No to brushes. yes to protective styles with most of your ends wrapped away like french braids and flat twists and twists. my trichologists also do not recommend raw oils and butter but they can be in the products. So I think the lack of leave-ins, deep conditioners and protective styles was a triple whammy that took their hair out.

@@marleyhill34 i think that may work for someone with scalp issues but i deep condition with a hooded dryer and seal my hair with hair growth oils after applying my leave in. It helps my hair stay moisturized longer. I also tried just finger detangling for 6 months and noticed not all the shed hair was coming out and my hair strands weren’t as smooth so my twists and braids would always have extra frizz. Keeping my hair curly for so long also contributed to friction damage as well.

    • @marleyhill34
      @marleyhill34 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@keishalebray1996 I don't follow everything my trichologists say. I deep condition with a steam cap. I seal my ends in winter only with a silicone, oil or grease to reduce friction. I moisturise my hair every day so I don't worry about keeping moisture in for days. I detangle with seamless combs every week and my tangle teezer for fine and fragile hair once a month. I don't have friction damage because my hair is always moisturized and detangled every week. Everyone has different techniques that work best for them and their lifestyle. I work out a lot and swim so sweat and chlorine has to be removed from my hair even if it's just a co-wash and a rinse-out conditioner. What my trichologists say is best practice for the healthiest hair but not everyones lifestyle fits with this.

I don’t need a rinse out conditioner because I prefer to deep condition using heat. I still for the most part, follow BGC method but I deep condition and trim on blown out hair. I don’t use a leave-in for my wash’n go’s because it makes my hair too soft and the set won’t last past 4 days. I just have not experienced the bad things people are saying about their method. I use AG Balance as well and when I was using it weekly, my hair was dry. I told my stylist this and she told me that since I primarily use easy to clean off the hair type of styling products, I'd be better off using a moisturizing shampoo and using ag balance maybe every 2 weeks or more.
She and the rest of the stylists at the salon I go to have received various trainings from Cut it Kinky.
So I think the real danger is the all or nothing attitude that many consumers have to the BGC info. Because even in their book they say your experience will vary and to be mindful what practices you adopt. Their biggest and main request has really just been to properly wash and condition your hair. They also suggest leave in products if your hair needs it. I don't know why their social media tactics vary so greatly (are more demanding and condescending) from their book which I feel was a very vital and genuine resource for me.

I go to my hair stylist when I want a specific technique or style (or just want to be pampered); I know she will work those products (no matter what she is using at the moment) until the desired effect is achieved. At home I use the same, very few, staple products that are tried and true for my hair. I live in a 4 season city, I am menopausal and graying (and fierce, by the way!) and my staple products rotate based on that. I try to stay true to my pigtail days of hair management and that method has not failed me yet. I enjoy your channel! I still feel silly to know that I was basically using a “clarifying” shampoo 1-2 times per week to cleanse my hair. Then not replenishing my hairs needs with a deep conditioner AND…then following the advice to not use a leave in underneath my wng to boot. 👀🫣
Next, I used those hard held & gels they recommended that left my hair stiff and crunchy! Not to mention, I set them with the hot hooded dryer for no less than 30 minutes at a time! That was also recommended. 😣
Chile, ALL of that left my hair in the gutter! Add in some curly cuts that didn’t address all my split ends and my hair looked like rats had been sucking on it and nibbling through it! 😝
I have since had to cut numerous inches off and basically start over!😅
My hair is now on a serious road to recovery and starting to thrive once again! 🙌🏽

I've been using Hydrating Cream Hairbath to cleanse, AG Boost + Color Raidance Conditioner to condition, and a leave in + foam for my protective style, and I must say my scalp has never been cleaner. Flakes gone. So in that way, I'm grateful for discovering these products.
However, all of the tight curl stylists sing the praises of the felicia leatherwood brush, and that thing was ripping my hair out! I lost almost half of my density over the last 5 months using that brush. As a girl with fine, high density "4c" hair, it's a NO from me! I have since switched to the Kazmaleje paddle comb and am seeing less breakage.

I make my own hair gel. My hair is bra strap length. I think the problem could be the curly cuts, going longer than 10 days without cleaning hydrating the hair, and the avoidance of using a little oil.

That AG tore my hair up! At first I thought it was working well because my hair looked so shiny. Then my hair became so parched. I was using it once a week, sometimes twice. I went back to using oils on my ends, products with lots of oil in it, and Qhemet Biologics has a pomade I love on my scalp. Hair is lush, hair is happy. I never understood the no oils mess but tried it cause on the surface "it makes sense"- they said oil prevents moisture. Then is stops when you think about it for more than one second. You still need to seal and condition your hair, and the water in the products they advocate for will evaporate. The mousse and gel they love will have your hair dried out if you use it consistently. I'm not a professional like you but your methods are better for hair IMO compared to theirs. If I moisturize my skin out of the shower why wouldn't I moisturize my hair with an oil product?

For these shampoos, you just need 1 pump and one 1 wash of each type. I buy the 32 oz and it lasts a whole year. 32 oz cost like $69 to $78 bucks, but when I used drug store shampoos like TGIN they only lasted me one month and I spent $10 to $15 a month. At the end of the day the salon quality ones were definitely more cost effective for me. I use the all-purpose ones like 1 to 2x a month. The hydrating ones weekly, and a clarifying one like 1x a month.

I will wear the wash n go for 6 days. Then I will co wash…just hop in the shower and wet my hair add use suave coconut conditioner to soften and define my pattern. Let is sit in my hair while I shower. Then once I rinse out each section, I apply the curly magic. Then once out the shower, I add the I create hold. I don’t have to worry about detangling my hair cause my hair never got dried out to the point where it begins to knot up.. I only detangle on the day I shampoo my hair. I’ve followed BGC method for the last 4 years of my journey went natural back in 2020. I got a curly cut from a natural hair salon that was like $200 she cut my hair however she wanted based on the shape I said I desired even though I had a TWA. Now the front of my hair is longer than the sides and the back and it grew out that way. I did get blow out cuts and thought it made my hair shorter so I switched to curly trims via another stylist. Also, I used their gel recommendations with no leave in, I got trims on my hair in its natural state but I never asked for a shape, just a trim. I washed my hair weekly with Color radiance followed by the hair bath shampoo and conditioner and used Uncle Funkys gel topped with either the doux mousse def, I create hold primarily and sometimes more recently the doux big poppa.
I noticed after my last trim my hair was still a bit tangled at the ends usually it’s perfectly fine I get my hair trimmed every 6 months per my stylist recommendations for me to retain length and my hair did grow at first. But over the last 6 months-1 year I noticed my hair isn’t retaining length and it’s became extremely frustrating as I feel I should be much further along in hair length that I wanted (mid back). I also used the Felecia leatherwood brush which I feel is doing more harm than good to my hair so I will be throwing out and replacing with the Denman d38. I also sat under the dryer weekly when I first started and over the last 2 yrs or so I went down to washing my hair every two weeks which sometimes turned into three out of laziness lol.
My aunt is a natural hairstylist of 20+ years who did my hair as a child when my hair was super long until my mom relaxed it. I will be going to her for a blow out trim and hair assessment soon and I can’t wait I’m hoping the damage isn’t severe as I haven’t noticed any split ends or any damaged feeling to my hair except dry rough ends.
All in all over the last two days since discovering you, Shelly V, and Rosie the BGC method is TRASHHHHH! I will be embarking on a new journey to healthy, strong long natural hair. I will be only getting blow out cute and using oils and butters and leave ins on my hair I’ll be sticking with twist, twist outs and other low manipulation low tension hairstyles for the next 6 months after my appointment with my aunt to assess my hair damage if there’s any grow it out and go from there. And I will be staying clear of weekly wash n gos will be taking them down to once every 3 months or so. I can’t wait to see where my hair goes after I get information on what’s happening

The nail in the coffin though was when they said don’t use a leave in because it keeps the styling product from adhering well. If that’s the case, why not use a lighter leave in? It seems whenever people desire to profit off the potential insecurities of their target market they evolve a "cult" like mentality.
A cleanser is a cleanser. It doesn't work differently on different hair types. It more often that different hair type havers are seeking different things. Straight hair havers want volume hence they often strip their hair so it'll look "bigger". Those with curlier hair don't and so our products are quite average in their purpose. A cleanser that cleanses and a conditioner that conditions. Its just we aren't obsessed with removing any oil or weight from our hair during the process. That doesn't equate to our hair being "damaged" as these companies like to insinuate.
Recently purchased the garnier whole blends lines, even though i strictly use tresemme, out of curiosity. I picked up one for "damaged" hair as i knew it wouldn't be stripping and it was quite nice. But why did they have to sell a non-drying product as an item for "damaged" hair? Thanks for pointing out these odd hair care selling points.

11:39 something I want to understand about the no oils and butters thing, is that if oils in the top5 ingredients are bad, why do so many products have oils just under a different name? like the hair bath shampoo, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, Caprylyl / Capryl Glucoside, and Sodium cocoyl isethionate are all coconut oil or palm oil derivatives, but the first 2 are in the top 5 ingredients, and all of these are within the top10. not to mention all the oils making up the bottom half of the ingredients list. i see this with a few products (shampoos, conditioners, and gels) that they deem ok to use. So i'm kind of curious as to why oil derivatives are ok when the oil in its entirety isn't?
I also wonder if their no oils and butters extends to silicones, since it doesn't seem to extend to coconut and palm oil derivatives?

So basically they say that oils and butters (raw) coat the hair and prevent moisture (water) from getting in (which is true in my case because when I look at picture of me before and after this method my hair was dry as hell before versus now after having cut out all that stuff) they say that using raw oils and butters in not well formulate products is redundant because oils are found in the products you already use (shampoo, conditioner, some stylers) they also explain that the first 5 ingredient rule to to prevent you from using products that down not have oils and butters formulated properly within the product (so if you look at a lot of shea moisture products some kind of oil or butter is the top ingredient, which works to coat your hair preventing moisture). Idk though the method has worked for me but I see how to cannot work for others and I actually spoke to my stylist last week about all this hoopla and she told me that a lot of stylists do not admit to not being experienced in curly cutting, period. So they watch a couple TH-cam videos on curly cutting and claim they can do it, or take one class on curly cutting and claim their specialists in a particular method which in any practice just having a degree isn't enough you need experience so that's where to lack of regulation comes in. These same inexperienced stylists will give advice and mess ppl's hair all the way up. I've also found that the major culprit that I've personally noticed is that ppl do not like that natural surface texture of their hair. Most black women have a non shiny, non smooth texture. So when you take away all the filler product and the costing your left with how your hair actually feels and its not always "likeable". At the end of the day though, I don't think it's a "do what's best for you" thing. I think it's a "do what you prefer or what you like" because I think fundamentally washing your hair at least once a week is necessary for everyone! Hope this helps a little!

This was very insightful. I’ll check out the AG balance shampoo out once I finish up my fantasia tea tree. you mentioned that some clients need 2 washes with clarifying shampoo and then a moisturizing one for heavy buildup. Is the AG balance clarifying enough to only need one clarifying wash and then the moisturizing one in those cases?

I’m not a fan, the Hair bath Innersense shampoo works like a clarifier on my hair. For a clarifying shampoo, I prefer Pattern or Miche Detox; they do the job, but are much more gentle and strip less. IMO, Innersense has a big learning curve. I rarely use it and when I do, I must apply a lot of Innersense leave-in. Otherwise, my hair is dry like straw.

Disclaimer: I am not a BGC nor Wash & Go enthusiast. I tried their method for 3 months and adapted it to my hair needs after that.
Innersense clarity, hydrating hairbath and the moisturising conditioner work on my hair. I restock once a year and even longer with the shampoos so for me it’s cost effective. However I wash my hair only once a week and I don’t do WnG.
I don’t think it’s fair to blame the products (I am talking to us consumers), it’s more the overall method, the lack of product knowledge and how the stylists took in the information when they went to those training classes. They just followed their instructors blindly without doing their own research.
The stylist I went to took their classes and how she thought her clients has nothing to do with what’s floating around on the internet.
I guess I got lucky but for me it was clear what’s what in terms of products from the start.
Also they are not against oils and butters. It’s *raw* oils and butters they have an issue with because obviously the WnG won’t work.
The strict rules of no oils in the first 5 ingredients was only for the 1 month detox.
