The High Cost of Holiness--Toilets, the Torah, and the Dead Sea Scrolls

  • I was honored to be part of one of the most fascinating archaeological discoveries at Qumran, the ancient settlement at the NW end of the Dead Sea that is associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls. I am speaking of the positive scientific identification of an area northwest of the "Camp" of Holiness, where the latrines used by the Community were located.
Back in the 1990s I began to wonder if the observance of the commandment in the Torah that there be no human waste "inside the Camp," also mentioned by Josephus regarding the Essenes (Jewish War Bk 2), might be verified on the ground archaeologically? And more particularly, since there is another Torah commandment that on the Sabbath one could not go "outside the Camp," the question became--how did the community, dedicated to such strict observance, manage themselves on the Sabbath. Teaming up with Israeli anthropologist Joe Zias, and a team of scientists in France, we made an amazing discovery--not only did we find the latrine area just as described in the Dead Sea Scrolls, but we discovered another surprise--that the very practice of piety might have led to a shortened lifespan by the inhabitants. In their efforts to be "Holy" they evidently payed a price. Our results were published in a peer reviewed academic journal: “Toilets at Qumran, the Essenes, and the Scrolls, New Anthropological Data and Old Theories,” with Joe Zias, Stephanie Harter-Lailheugue, Revue de Qumran 22:4 (2006): 631-640.
This lecture was part a Biblical Archaeology Society seminar, publishers of the premiere archaeology magazine, Biblical Archaeology Review. It is used with permission.
I encourage viewers to subscribe to the incredible BAS Library, with thousands of articles, books, and videos. There is nothing like this rich archive that covers every major topic and discovery for more than 40 years. The "maverick" Tabor is talking about is Robert Eisenman who is or was professor of biblical studies at California State Long Beach and who has a web site if anybody is interested. He's actually well-versed in the DSS and other topics, and has written numerous books on the subject.

He’s a very capable scholar, and knows the materials extremely well. A PhD from U.Chicago, one of the big four in Biblical/ancient studies and the history of religions (UC, Princeton, Yale, Harvard), he’s a well-known scholar and established in his field. A joy to watch, particularly since while a Princeton doctorate in religion (same class entrant as Eddie Glaude) I am a scholar of East Asian religions and so know little directly about this subject, but I have confidence in Professor Tabor’s scholarship.

They seem very similar to a modern conservative. Just as the Pharisee comes off as a modern day liberal and the sagasee are as atheistic progressives as you can get. The Bible old new testament read very much like this. You can tell what faction is missing and is who is writing the text. Who is first person is clear to my eyes .

    The God of All Comfort
3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 6And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

This is the laziest form of witnessing. You're really punking out on your mission. You must not have much faith. That doubt you feel? You're right to feel it. That fear you have that God's not really there? It's nothing to be afraid of. Drive-by spamming of Bible verses can't possibly actually be fulfilling to you and I'm sure does nothing to alleviate your doubts and your cognitive dissonance. That would all go away if you just admitted to yourself that the beliefs you've been fed are not just unsupportable or even provably false in many respects (e.g. there was no Adam and Eve, therefore no "fall," and no reason to murder a homeless guy to somehow make up for it), the soteriology would be illogical and unethical even if it was true. Christianity (not Jesus but the Christian religion, which Jesus didn't preach or believe in) basically asserts that it doesn't matter what kind of person you are but only what you believe. As long as you believe a dead body came back to life and flew up to outer space 2000 years ago, you can rape and murder all you want. If you don't bel;ieve it, you're damned no matter how good or innocent a person you are. Ted Bundy gets saved, all the Jews killed in the Holocaust go to Hell. That's not a very nice religion. I agree with Jesus that it doesn't matter what you believe, it matters what kind of person you are. That was the whole point of the Parable of the Good Samaritan or better yet, the Sheep and the Goats. Preaching personal dogma at people accomplishes nothing, helps nobody and has no moral or spiritual value. It's completely selfish. You get to tell yourself you're doing a good thing and if they don't listen it's because they're bad. There's no hard work involved, no thinking and requires no sacrifices or good deeds or even the slightest compassion for the people you're preaching at. If you want to make the world a better place, try being a good person. I know being a good person is hard and spouting Bible verses is easy, but I can guarantee you that you won't reach one person or change one life doing that. Francis of Assisi said "preach the Gospel at all time. If necessary, use words." but words are never necessary.
Why don't you have the courage to at least comment under your real name? Are you ashamed of the gospel?

Bless those who have had the Bible REVEALED to them by the POWER of the HOLY SPIRIT: This means they had the same experience Paul and John had and Peter has at the end of the church age (wrath) and what Judas has when he hangs himself in the Potters field of blood: The whole Bible is about US and our experience with the CHRIST (MESSIAH LIGHT) that rises in us THROUGH the EVIL ROOT (from outside of us because God is all around us but NOT IN US till Christ RISES IN US from outside of us):
Christ comes through the EYE of the NEEDLE, the SINGULARITY, the Zero point to make the EVIL ROOT GOOD hence the TREE of knowledge of evil and good, a GOOD TREE and this is the PURPOSE OF CHRIST IN THE WORLD:
It happens first to Judah who TOOK A VOW to do this NAHUM @, Hence we see Jesus (the circumcised heart that experiences this event) come through the ROOT and is the OFFSPRING OF JUDAH, David who opens his EYES IN HELL and discovers the TRUTH here:
Paul (SAUL FROM BENJAMIN) is the last tribe that CONNECTS the TREE OF LFIE NOW to the nations/gentiles so through HIM we see this CONNECTION TO ALL while with Judah we see the BIRTH OF LIGHT INTO THE WORLD and FIRST ISRAEL connects to Judah (Gen 49):
This event happens in everyone whose VISITATION, WHOS APPOINTED HOUR FOR JUDGEMENT comes and keeps their VOW TO RETURN to the FATHERS HOUSE because the PRODIGAL SON runs out of his LIFE FORCE by being in this LOWEST of dimensions and must return when he has discovered what? THAT THE FATHERS SERVANTS have it better than the EXILE (EGO) that is an artificial intelligence, a STRONG DELUSION we all have to COME OUT to return HOME:
I wrote my spiritual interpretation of the BOOK of Revelation on Amazon after I worked it out based on my VISITATION, my hour for coming HOME, (1992) my rapture, resurrection from the dead men's bones Adam brought us to:

45:30 pretty elaborate interpretation there ; not translation; of TABERNACLE.
Fyi the Tabernacle would have been a TENT as that is what tabernacle literally means. Temple was the great structures of Tyre brought to Judea.
See; you are misusing temple over and over; so tabernacle of men is pure gibberish; as the tent would obviously not have survived to today like stone
James is very much a preacher and believer; and it's why I listen to these.

    1 Timothy chpt. 6
16who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

    A Judgment against Babylon
1The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
2Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
3I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.
4The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
5They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
6Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:
8And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
14And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land.
15Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
16Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.
17Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
18Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.
19And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.
21But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.
22And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.
