These Ikwerre men are truly remarkable, deserving commendation for their efforts in addressing all areas of concern. The Ikwerre identity is now crystal clear, and any attempt to deviate from this is simply an attempt to falsely alter their identity. Since their inception, they have steadfastly maintained their position and successfully resisted all attempts to undermine their strong identity.

I believe that Ikwerre is another Igbo subgroup just like Owerri, Onicha, Nsukka, Ngwa, Mbaise, Orlu, Enugwu, etc. All these Igbo subgroups have different Igbo dialects, as well as Ikwerre. But they understand each other, and are strongly connected by Igbo traditions and culture, especially the four Igbo market days, masquerade, musical instruments, foods, fruits, especially kola nut, yam, coco yam, etc.

African countries speak the languages of their colonizers they learnt from educational institutions but they also speak their tribal languages which they have mastered in their homes from their parents. The elementary test question is why do Nigerians speak English? The answer is because the British was the colonial master of Nigeria. Whereas English is the indigenous language of Britain, do you have an indigenous language that no body can claim as not yours? Think seriously about this question.

The Ijaws speak Ijaw and also Igbo. Ex-Prez Jonathan Goodluck, late musician Rex Lawson, Dokubo, Timaya, Ann- Kio Briggs and more speak/spoke Igbo. Even Saro Wiwa an Ogoni man spoke Igbo but spoke his native Ogoni. All ethnic groups spoke their ethnic languages which distinguished them from the Igbos. This must also apply to the Ikwerres. What is the ethnic language that Ikwerre people speak that is different from the Igbo? Besides, why is there hardly any Ikwerre word traceable to the Benin language which were ironclad in their heads during their sojourning?

No one is attempting to claim Ikwere. The reality is that the Igbo people firmly believe that they and the Ikwere people belong to the same family and are brothers. Regardless of any actions or statements made by a group of educated individuals or selfish politicians, the Igbo people's conviction remains unshakeable. This is despite the ill-treatment they experienced from their Ikwere brothers after the Nigerian civil war.

    • @cryptofxalgorithms

Of course they are brothers and that is supposed to be the attitude igbos should carry about the whole matter , brother hood simple. Yorubas dont go about stalking and harassing the itsekiris and olukunmis and attempt an imposition over their heritage or call them ethnic Yorubas. A Yoruba Oba will respectably address an olukunmi as an olukunmi and an Itsekiri as an itsekiri. That is the way to celebrate diversity. Sister heritages and cousinhood celebrating each others similarities as well as uniqueness. Simple!

It's difficult to deny who you are, even when you want deny it, your real identity keeps giving you away.
Let Ikwerre be whatever they want to be but who you are will continue to give you away.
One distinctive traits about Igbos is continuous maintenance of clan name anywhere they found themselves.
Many Igbo clan nsmes in other parts of Igbo land still maintains their names in Ikwerre land such as Dioka, Dioga clan, Okpo clan and so on.
To me, let Ikwerre be whatever they want to be.

The problem with you guys is narcissism . A Yoruba will sit with an Itsekiri and both will entertain themselves with their similarities and differences. so will an Efik and ibibio , Urhobo and itsekiri or Chinese and Japanese without qualms. Distinctions delineate us all into different groups or ethnicities simple. Ikwerre dialect for instance is a mix of both igbo dialect and iduoid words and phrases, certain names point to other lineages other than igbo suggesting igbos moved into an aboriginal group or clan. Yorubas influenced itsekiri greatly that is why itsekiri is a mix of both yoruba and iduoid words , vocabulary and phrases and bear certain non Yoruba names . Understand Ethnicities can be compound and not from a single stock like the nnewi, nsukka or other wholly stock igbo tribes.. Simple! una own too dey too much! so should ikwerres tell only a half story of their heritage or paint a half picture of who they are?

@@cryptofxalgorithmsand the problem with you guys is ignorance while claiming knowledge, any one who knows the languages can tell the difference btw itsekiri and Yoruba,or urhobo, now on that premise ,please state the "iduoid " phrases in ikwere that you are talking about, ikwere is a dialect on its own,it has no linguistic similarity with any Edo language,if you were any knowledgeable about ikwere and the Igbo language, you would know it is just a dialect of the broader Igbo language.and Also it is the other way around they (ikwere)moved into an largely Igbo area, not the other way around, there are izon words and phrases in ikwere ,ndoki, andoni and etche , because of proximity but the language structure, syntax and idioms is just igbo.their name for the Igbo(isoma) is actually isuama which is just the name of a single clan in imo, obviously the first people they interacted with inland largely so they used the term to broadly refer to the Igbo, the Igbo language is not a monolith,it is comes in vastly different varieties,an ezzi man cannot understand an abriba .man without speaking the general igbo ,but they are both called Igbo, much less an ikwere man who is fairly intelligible to most imo and abia people who n without an interpreter while they would need one for the ebonyi man..today ikwere is just 4 lgas ,they have the same markers and identifiers as the general Igbo culture, thier name for God,and other deities are same, their market days are. Same ,they break kola in the same way, even thier mothers and great grand mothers and some of their fathers originated from the other "Igbo" people.if all other Igbo were to disappear from the earth today leaving them ,then they would be by default be the Igbos to all and sundry,so this is really a moot and useless argument only for those who are ignorant of the history of the area.unforbately most are therefore the persistent innane argument.nobody is trying to make them Igbo by force ,they are what they are ,if you walk like a duck ,quack like a duck, and your parents were ducks, how are you a swan all of a sudden, they are from Edo right?but nothing of the Edo language or culture remains in the language,no name or identifier, even the ewe in Togo and Ghana still traces of Yoruba, the zamarima and buzu of Niger' and Chad still bear Hausa markers and traces .but the Igbo without war or conquest wiped every trace of bini from ikwere.doesnt that sound strange??

If only they have been speaking their own unique language different from Igbo just like all the ethnic groups in their areas do, then no linguistic issue would have been available for contemplation. Igbos have been asking them not to parade the Igbo language as Bini. Many have wondered why the Ikwerre men like marrying Igbo women who add more to them clinging to Igbo, whereas the marriages from Bini would introduce the missing lingual Bini link. School teaching of the Bini the language would definitely fortify their point of view, frustrating any effort by the Igbos of saying, don not speak my language.

Do the Scots not speak English, but are they English? Do the Welsh not speak English, but are they English? Do the Catalonians not speak Spanish, but are they Spanish? Do the Belgians not speak both French and Dutch, but are they either French or Dutch. I can go on and on!

During the invasion of Benin empire the british recruited hausas, yorubas Oyo and igbos Abia, after they succeeded they created the northern region, western region and the Eastern region. In the Eastern region you can't get a job or go to school if you don't have Abia name or speak Abia language. Abia language and names was imposed on every tribe in the Eastern region. The yorubas also tried to do the same thing in the old western region, but the OBA of Benin and the elders understand their evil plans to replace our name and language with Oyo language names. So the Midwest region was created to preserve EDO language traditions and cultur, if not the creation of the Midwest region, by now the Benins would have be speaking yoruba language while deltas will be speaking igbo language.

In my view , this matter has been too exaggeratingly twisted. This in part due majorly to the narcissistic tendencies of a certain group of people that I wont bother to mention here, not all of them though fortunately but some. Ethnicity is a simple phenomenon of internalizing a uniqueness over time averagely centuries to millennia that gives a people a signature sort of different from other close or relative groups or ethnicities. A Chinese for instance can understand 40 to 60 percent plus or minus of what a Japanese or Korean may speak and often bear similar names, but that does not make a Japanese a Chinese. Ethnicity is about divergencies in lineage /cross lineage , migrations, affiliations /cross affiliations, disputes, wars, dialectic or linguistic deviations in speech forms or distinct tonal and stress patterns of speech , politics, culture /cross culture ,demographic changes etc that create in a group its uniqueness over another or other relative groups over averagely centuries to millennia. You have the Yorubas and the Itsekiris for instance. Only a narcissistic Yoruba will call an Itsekiri a Yoruba and as it stands only a narcissistic Chinese will refer to a korean or Japanese as Chinese. They are referred to in reference to accredited precepts inclusive of the subject being addressed here simply as 'relatives' . Thus a chinese is only a relative of the korean, the Yoruba a relative of the Itsekiri. Thus an ikwerre is only a relative of the Ika man, an Ika a relative of the igbanke , the igbanke himself a relative of both the ikwerre and the igbo etc. Cut and quote this matter is as flat simple as that and any other opinion outside this is objectively narcissistic!

The main root of this issue is simple. It is rooted in the narcissisms of many igbos, a Yoruba will sit with an Itsekiri and both will enjoy and entertain themselves with their similarities and differences without any qualms. A chinese wil do similar with a Japanese. A narcissist igbo doesnt want to hear ikwerre , ika , igbanke etc he is only interested in hearing igbo. The explanation is igbos moved a lot and moved to locations where they even outnumbered the aboriginals. Just like japanese and itsekiri which are of compound vocabularies , chinese and aboriginal dialects for the Japanes and yoruba and iduoid vocabularies and dialects for itsekiris , the ika , ikwere , igbanke languages have dissimilar words and phrases pointing to the aboriginal dialect the moving igbos met. Fast track centuries these ethnicities are unique in that they are not solely igboid but both igboid and iduoid. Their lineages are also not solely igboid but igboid and iduoid. Simple thing but not so with narcissistic igbos. They are so objectively narcissistic they dont even want to allow the custodians of these heritages tell of their compound lineages and heritages and wont rest until they make mention of igbo.

When the ‘unwise’ old man said that his ancestor, Akslaka and his brother mrsn aeay from Benin, when tg were ruling Oba became tyrannical, he is not saying their Benin names. What about Ighodaro or Omoregie. If they were, actually, Benin people, what were their original names, before they changed it to Alalaka, which is a very serious Igbo word or noun. What language or culture did they migrate with. It is gross ignorance, to associate Ikwere people with Benin. The fact that they had Igbo names and, came from Benin, means that they were Igbos, living under the Obas dominance. After there are Igbos in that geographical enclave. There could have been a sprinkle of Benin people and, they have every right to claim Benin, but should not drag others with them. The same ‘unwise’ old man is not saying the name they were answering, when they cane from Benin. It is a shame! He doesn’t even know that Ikwere is not even their real name. One of their progenitors, Elechi Amadi, wrote one of the best books on Igbo culture, but made a 90% turn, at some point of the Civil War and after the Civil War, out of un order to please his new found masters and out of shame and embarrassment of his treachery and betrayal of his brothers and intellectual colleague. The ‘unwise’ old man should say even one Bini word, that can ve found in either the Ikwere language or culture. If not, that makes him a veast of no nation. My strong feeling is that, anybody that denies being Igbo, should be ignored and forgotten. You can recall the Biblical Israelite tribe which refused to cross the Jordan River, with the rest and opted to remain in Egypt, because they were being favored, while the rest suffered. What happened, un the end? When a new Pharaoh came and became oppressive, they became trapped and then ran Southwards, West Africa - too late to cross the Jordan. It will happen again.
    Thank you.

Your adept writing abilities are commendable. However, it appears that there might be a gap in your understanding of the subject matter, which I find disappointing. Allow me to address your questions. Have you ever had the opportunity to visit any towns in Nsukka or any villages in Ebonyi State? I ask this in order to explore the depth of your firsthand experiences.
Regarding the identity of the true Igbos, it is crucial to acknowledge the complexities that arise as cultures evolve over time. While it is true that some towns referred to as Igbo communities today may not speak the Igbo language in a wholly intelligible manner, this does not necessarily negate their Igbo identity. Societal shifts, historical influences, and even generations growing up in diverse environments can contribute to variations in language proficiency within a community.
It is essential to recognize that culture, language, and identity are intricate phenomena. They are subject to transformation and adaptation over time and might not always conform to a static ideal. If you have further insights or specific information to share regarding Igbo culture or language, I am here to engage in a meaningful discussion.

The problem with you guys is narcissism . A Yoruba will sit with an Itsekiri and both will entertain themselves with their similarities and differences. so will an Efik and ibibio , Urhobo and itsoko or Chinese and Japanese without qualms. Distinctions delineate us all into different groups or ethnicities simple. Ikwerre dialect for instance is a mix of both igbo dialect and iduoid words and phrases. Certain names point to other lineages other than igbo suggesting igbos moved into or met on ground an actual aboriginal group or clan. Yorubas influenced itsekiri greatly when they moved into their lands that is why itsekiri is a mix of both yoruba and iduoid words , vocabulary and phrases and bear certain non Yoruba names of the actual aboriginals. Understand Ethnicities can be compound and not from a single stock like the nnewi, nsukka or other wholly stock igbos tribes. Simple! una own too dey too much! so should ikwerres tell only a half story of their heritage or paint a half picture of who they are?

The language is ikwerre , not igbo , there are dissimilar words and phrases fused into it with makes it a distinct language . Urhobo is not Itsoko neither is Chinese called Japanes they are two similar but distinct things , so also are the people distinct from the igbo group. one day this matter go tire una. Allow the custodians of the heritage tell their stories for themselves after you ll say the White man emasculated the black man by telling his narrative . so what do you guys think you are doing?

Why silence the voice of others while you let some speak? Are you trying to hide the majority opinions that don't support your falsehood with the loud background music as well? You came from Benin but AKALAKA which means ( DESTINY) in Igbo is your PROGINATOR! Tell us what the name AKALAKA mean in Benin language?????

Ekwerres did not come from anywhere, they are Igbos and they have always been there.
All sub Igbo groups in River state like Ikwerre and Anioma in Delta state are indigenes, they did not come from anywhere.
