There is an ongoing attempt by many Igbo groups to re-write their Igbo heritage out of their history and origin. In the process of doing so, they are loosing vital aspects of their culture and history and also turning themselves into minorities in their own states. Thank you Nna Men TV for this laudable project. We need to document these things

Ekpeya didn't come from Bini kingdom. Ekpeya is an autochthonous group, and they've the only group that's very different from other Igbo tribes. Their elders who were interviewed by the colonial masters never told anybody that they migrated from anywhere.

I understand the fear of being identified as Igbo in rivers when it was in control of the extremely Igbophobic and hateful ijaw but in 2022 it’s time to let it go.
The fear at this point is irrational. I wasn’t born then but my sister was and my parents were in their 20s.
The hell igbo communities faced in Rivers under Ijaw is something worth studying.
The ijaw with federal backing could wake up one day and choose any property owned by an Igbo to steal. Jobs given to the more qualified Igbo were stolen by the ijaw.
It was hellish until Bayelsa was created which helped reduce the control and tight grip of the ijaw in rivers but unfortunately the psychological damage was already done.
It’s going to take years of reaching out and education (counseling) for these people to fully recover from the psychological damage which has caused them to being ashamed of being Igbo or seen as Igbo.
I’m glad Nnaa MenTV is doing this and yes i am down to supporting you and the crew. If I ever visit home and you are on your expedition add me in. I’m willing to lend any assistance.
As an Igbo from a mixed background it’s disheartening seeing folks who are even more Igbo than I am be so ashamed of themselves.
As far as i am concerned even one drop of Igbo blood makes you Igbo but you must stand in it in good and bad times

In 1941, he co-founded Ijo Peoples League,a platform to unite Ijos that were in different divisions of the Eastern region under one province.
After the end of World War II, Biriye was involved in politics, he was an early member of NCNC but his experience of the competition between NCNC and AG formed his understanding that ethnic minorities needed better representation as the core base of both parties came from the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic groups. He began a campaign for the creation of Rivers States. In 1953, he gained the support of the Action Group for the creation of an independent State but the plan to include Old Calabar and Ogoja provinces as part of a new COR state pushed him away from the group.
In response to the need of the 1957 Constitutional Conference to include all shades of opinions, Biriye pressed for the representation of Ijos among the delegates. He was supported by the Conference of Rivers Chiefs which gave him the mandate to represent the Ijo region at the conference and also to present their case that the area should be accorded the same status as it was in the 1880s when the Oil Rivers Chiefs of Bonny, Nembe, Brass, Okrika, Kalabari and Degema signed treaties with the British. Unsuccessful legal presentations were made by Biriye and Udo Udoma that granting independence to Nigeria without adequate protection of the rights of Rivers Provinces as a separate state would be a violation of the treaties. In 1959, he became the chairman of the Bonny County Council.
In 1967, changes in the structure of governance led to the creation of Rivers State and in 1969, Biriye was appointed a commissioner. He was commissioner for Agriculture and later redeployed to work in the state's Ministry of Works.

Origination and migration is two different thing . They might migrate from benin . But for sure originated from eze chima , and are captured by benin people. And later migrated to rivers on the coastal line. As u were told in ukwani. That it has border with egbema or ndoni & ogba. If u watch closely all these language are closely ikah and are related to ikwerre. So it's still one people migration story that is going. Like the way. Nri people migrated all down to aro. Also.

You made very valid points. Centuries ago, there were Igbos in the area now known as Delta State, even extending slightly into present day Edo state. At its height, some of these groups were attacked by the Benin empire. Some were conquered and ruled by Benin for a while and others fled across the river Niger. Onisltsha is said to have migrated from Asaba.
But these Igbo groups had earlier originated from the Igbo heartland and spread out through the river Niger into the present day Delta and Edo states before some of them migrated again, to escape the Benin empire, to present day Rivers and cross rivers.
It's a long journey and the history requires more in depth study

It could be that this man is correct by saying they migrated from Benin.
Before, Benin was known as Iduu and it was an Igbo community then before the great "Agha Iduu na ọbá".
During that invasion, many of the Iduu people and its neighbouring Igbo communities fled (south)eastward and settled wherever they think is safe for them.
The invading Yorubas came over and occupy those places, they mixed up with the Igbo remnants of Iduu kingdom.
That mixture was what gave birth to Edo (Benin),as we know it today.
So, if the ancestors of the Ekpeye people were among those who fled, they're still Igbo.
Their Igboness is indicated in everything about them, linguistically, culturally, anthropologically, logically etc
    Ekpeye dialect--Mmenye ọzụ
    Standard Igbo--Mmanya azụ
    Ekpeye dialect--Mmenye onunu
    Standard Igbo--Mmanya onunu
    Ekpeye dialect--Ali
    Standard Igbo--Ala
    Ekpeye--Olu
    Standard Igbo--Elu
    Ekpeye--inyoma
    Standard Igbo--inyom
    Ekpeye--koma
    Standard Igbo--ikom
If it's today's Bini that they are claiming, they're not being truthful because looking at the locations of the ethnic groups in that area, Ekpeye is at the "backyard" of Igbo, Bini people cannot successfully migrate to that area as Bini, because the ijaws will be on their way and they will have to mix up with Ijaw or be integrated into Isoko, Urhobo or the Ijoid society.
In addition, they is no trace of Bini in them. Igbo, Yoruba and other tribes' slaves maintained at least 20%of their heritage even while under suppression as slaves in the Americas.
But, the free Ekpeye people did not have any atom of Edoid in them, are they trying to deceive their decendants?
Everything about Ekpeye indicates Igbo origin; language, culture, dressing, food etc, that is why linguists and anthropologist will always have them as Igboid.

Lol most of you need to research more before you spit you know. Saying they can not successfully migrate from Bini is funny. Maybe you don't know why it's called the Niger delta, from Benin, Delta, Bayelsa to Rivers state we are connected, we are down, which is the south, even when the British were fighting the Nembe man, he moved from Bayelsa to Bonny to ask for support on a normal day if you look at it, it seems impossible for such movement. But water connected it and the water is the fastest way to move. Delta state is not far from Ahoada, especially Ndoni delta state is not far from there, thats how the bad boys escape easily eg Don Wani when he excaped to delta through the thick forest, and you know delta is so close to Bini. Infact it's easier to migrate from Benin to Rivers state if you don't know, also don't forget that, Bayelsa was once Rivers state.

Wen ENCULTURATED, their Igbo names r dropped & replaced with Ijaw names. Dis practice was centuries b4 d creation of Nigeria & has nothing 2do with Biafran civil war.
Or is OPUBO(OPOBO) an Igbo name? Is JUBO-JUBOFEM an Igbo name?
D story of how Opobo was founded is there on record. D history of d founding of Opobo was documented evn by Europeans, it has bin told a zillion times over. Wot lies r u now referring 2in Opobo history?
MBANASO Okwaraozurumba frm Amaigbo in present day Imo State was sold by a slave trader Ojukwu frm Ogwuta in present day Imo State.
Chf Alali Opubo of d Ani Pepple War Canoe House bought Mbanaso, eventually ENCULTURATED him thus changing his name MBANASO OKWARAOZURUMBA to JUBO-JUBOFEM OPUBO wich Europeans couldn't pronounce & called him JAJA OPOBO.
Following a dispute , Jaja, along with 14 other WAR CANOE HOUSES left Bonny, d king of Nkòrò accommodated dem & gave dem land 2settle thus a new kingdom was founded wich Jaja named after his father Chf OPUBO (OPOBO).
D names JUBO-JUBOFEM OPUBO, r they Igbo names? Y was MBANASO OKWARAOZURUMBA renamed JUBO-JUBOFEM OPUBO?
Y is he not known as MBANASO OKWARAOZURUMBA of AMAIGBO?
Y is he JAJA of OPOBO instead?
Wot is d lies & make up stories in Opobo history? Y r u guys obsessed with Opobo matter, calling us liars? U r non natives, yet u call ppl liars bcos u tink u know their own history more dan dem. Na wah o !

If you do your research you will find that Igbos have been living in what is called Nigeria today for over 3000. years, and are the oldest indigenous ethnic group in Nigeria. In those 3000 years Igbos have consistently moved all around the Niger Delta. When the man says they migrated from Bini, he is right but they are Igbos who migrated to Edo land at one point and then migrated away from Bini to the Rivers area. The irony is that all the major ethnic groups in the East and Midwest (Ijaw, Ibibio, Ika, Igala, Igbo) all have the same root. So Ikwerre, Ika, Ekpeye, Igbo are all brothers while Ijaw, Ibibio, Igala and Igbo are cousins.

To know ekpeye history you mist research the grate Akalaka who had many sons, one of which went on and ruled the bini empire. A war in bini toppled his dynasty and their descendants had to make their way back home. Ekpeye also share ancestry with the Arochukwu and the onitsha people.
Bottom line. Ekpeye and ibo are not seperable. Our history did not start in bini. Our ancestor Akalaka preceeds the bini kingdom.

Igbo people need to understand what it is to migrate. If I list a lot of isoko words for you you will think we are igbos because they are very similar. For the fact that the ekpeye people have lived with Igbo neighbours for long it has influenced their language a lot which is very clear. UNU in ekpeye is mouth and UNU is the same mouth in isoko just like agba is jaw in isoko I believe is same in ekpeye. If you listen a lot to the pronounciations of words they have a lot of dh in their words which you can find in isoko. My point is you can't conclude that they are igbos just because they now speak similar words. It's called migration. Ask any engenni person to list words in engenni or yenagoa people and ask isoko guys..50% is isoko language the rest is migration mixing up with their neighbours today. Leave the ekpeye people alone to identify themselves don't impose anything on them . I don't like it when people call me edo people just because we share some words together as isoko. That is how it is. My language has some edo, Igbo and some ijaw in it and other unique words that you will never hear in any other language that is why we are who we are. We are all connected in niger delta and eastern Nigeria .let us be united but not trying to make others slaves of another ethnic group.

I understand what you're saying, but their is a difference between being similar and being the same.
Ekpeye is actually a dialect of the greater Igbo language, just like your Isoko language has it's own dialects,an average Ekpeye man understands the standard Igbo ,they practice the Igbo culture just as those in the southeast, those things that made southeast people Igbo is also what they have. Why would Ekpeye not be Igbo,is it because they're in River State?
Idoma language has many Igbo words, but nobody is claiming them because their language is just another language and they have their own culture.
Any body who says that Ekpeye is not Igbo should please explain what he understood by the word" Igbo",

Well said. Igbos can't go about claiming other smaller ethnic groups just because they share similar words, traditions, and festivals with them. We are whom we've chosen to be based on our peculiarities.

Was it Igbo that named their villages? No Igbo is claiming them, people have right to choose who they are and want to be.

IGBOS lived in Bini first before the present Bini came. Eze Chima also migrated to Bini , and left Bini again after a dispute , and his children formed Agbor , Onitsha and other clans , the people of Ikwerre and Ekpeye are continuous children of Eze Chima , though they still are a mixture of Owerri as well.
But truth is , even till date , there are still IGBOS in Edo State. The people of Igbanke and Olije are IGBOS in Edo State till date. Igbo is older than Bini on Earth .
