Teen for Realistic Violence is the Initial Print of the game. When they updated the ESRB on the back of the case to be more accurate, it introduced the Masterpiece misprint, and only after a third round of revisions did they get everything correct. Other misprints seem to be factory error (be it, disc or inside case errors), while the two back-cases seem to be full-print errors that slipped through the cracks.
The original presentation, especially the black label (because of the contrast with all the white), was amazing and a great example of minimalist design philosophy of the time.
I dont know how I ended up on this video but I do collect PS1 FF7 copies. While I do not look particularly for misprints (I just wanna have different versios i.e: I own the og japanese version, the japanese international, the european ones (normal and platinum, etc). The two american copies I own are misprints. I have the black label one with the realistic violence one and the greatest hits one with the double Sephiroth. Again i was not looking for misprints but those are just the ones I got lol. Not i wanna find a diajointed i copy lmao

regarding the floating i. Typically during prepress, text blocks are often converted to outlines (especially in that era where font management was terrible) to prevent RIP software from enountering a font issue and substituting the missing font with a default one. This makes all letters and characters into individual vector shapes. Most software today will keep the outlined text grouped, but it’s possible to ungroup these into individual objects. A misclick and drag is super easy once that’s done. In Adobe Illustrator, you’ll be holding onto the spacebar (to temporarily switch to the hand tool) and clicking and dragging around to scroll around the workspace (all the time). it’s easy to accidentally grab and move something with the pointer tool if you’re going fast and mistime your spacebar and click.
What a great time for this to show up. Just bought a PS1 + FF7 a couple weeks ago and thanks to slow shipping where I live, I just got everything I need to play in today... had noticed the black label I bought has the infamous "masterp ece" typo on back and was looking into this earlier myself and just had a cursory glance. I really love the idea of some dude slaving 40+ hours to get to Sephiroth, then putting in disc 3 only to be greeted with SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS SUPERSPONGE! I mean, I feel bad for that imaginary person if they exist, but it's still a *hilarious* idea on some level.
About the different age ratings on the various prints, it could also be that the age rating was updated and they had to change it on later re-prints (introducing new misprints while doing so lol) Changing age ratings because age rating regulations change is not that uncommon
Think I'm more impressed with how people noticed all these small differences in the prints. Though, the double Sephiroth one got a good laugh outta me cause how did that even happen? Lmao
“Whatever! Ship it out, gotta meet demand!!” The funny thing is back then nobody would know. Very few people had internet access back then and there was no place where people would be sharing digital images of these cases, so QC was so much lower on print runs.
This video had me scrambling for my copy of the game to see if mine was misprinted Come to find out I have the Realistic Violence misprint! I never would’ve noticed, great vid!
This made me check my copy and yep, all the discs are normal. I don't have a manual with my copy but it's black label and has the realistic violence on the ESRB blurb in the back.
I had an odd greatest hits copy of FF7: it looked identical to the original release except for a small green band on the spine that said greatest hits. Have you even seen one like this? I bought it from Best Buy about 6 months before the release of FF8 if that helps.
Yeah I still remember that printed text on the box that I thought was wrong. "Quite possibly the greatest game of all time". For January 1997, that statement clearly meant to read "Definitely the greatest game of all time".
I'm in the UK and I have my 'Platinum' copy of FF7, which I suppose is comparable to your greatest hits. It has a 'preview disc' of FF8. I'm pretty sure I had the original UK (PAL) FF7 but played it so much the discs were so scratched up that the PS1 wouldn't read them so I had to rebuy it. No idea what happened to the original copy. I did a quick scan of my copy though and couldn't find any misprints, but I wonder if you've got any of the PAL versions in your collection?
I was aware of a couple of the variations but never really put much thought into it, I own my original black label and for me FF7 got me thru some dark times in my youth, and means so much to me personally, that I bought another copy of it and have kept it sealed in my collection but have not seen what variant that one is.
Every greatest hits disc has a misprint. I the text below the disc number it uses the word 'traemarks' instead of trademarks. As for the SpongeBob print that happened on a greatest hits copy and has only been seen on a video which has been since deleted.
Yeah which while technically possible to just have the used the wrong master for the disc burn compared to the print, they were done in runs of the thousands, which would mean if the wrong burn to image was done there would have been thousands of copies like that out there. Only other way would be when the discs were moved between the burn and the silk screen print but again would be weird for just one disc to slip in there, also highly unlikely I think it was a early internet joke like we had a lot of those it'd be relatively easy to pull off.
I wasn't into RPGs until quite a while after this game came out so I personally don't know but... was there a shortage of copies or something? I know its popularity was a huge surprise so if they needed to rush the printing to satisfy demand I could see it explaining all these mistakes.
Hell yeah. My black labor doesn’t seem to have any of these issues, other than it just says realistic violence. Haven’t checked disc 3 for playability, tho…
@ yup we didn’t get replacements for over a week. First and only time have I experienced a game issue like that with a purchase. 3 of my cousins bought the game at the same time and we were baffled lol
Had to dig my copy out, misplaced i version. Though my copy has seen better days. I remember in 2004 taking all my PSX cd backs and taping them to my walls for a few months. The front cover apparently split in half and had to tape it together. The 1st disc has some chipped, not making it unplayable as you can still see chrome/rainbow coating still. Disc 1 skips on certain cutscenes. Disc 2 has a spiral from the center going out to rim, still works not sure how I did that. The instruction manual is crusty from someone spilling beer on it. Have had my PSX copy since March '99. My Brady games guide is on another level of F.U.B.A.R.
@@zic3902I opened up tales of graces f for PS3 yesterday for my son to play and noticed it had an instruction manual. Was a small one but still I haven't seen one since PS3. I think that was the last generation to have them.

Retro game collecting has its issues lately for sure. But at least in FF7's case, they sold over 10 million copies of the game. They're everywhere and can be gotten for like 20$ so theres no shortage of these guys!
I'm just disgusted all around at the price of retro games. Why? Because I actually want to play the damn games, but SOME collectors are in it purely for the money. It boils my blood.
cosmic mischief is a pretty weighty crime
I caught that too.

Audibly laughed at "Cosmic mischief". That pretty much sums up FFVII if you come to think about it.

2:25 Fun fact *SPOLIER* Aerith dies before she can get on the Highwind, making this artwork impossible without glitches.
She is alive during the first Junon section where you do see the Highwind on the airstrip, so it's probably based during that part.

Ran back to check mine. Does Final Fantasy VIII have the same misprint details as VII?
I'm honestly not sure! I haven't ever looked into FF8 as much. Might be worth looking into!
Might as well throw FF9 and Tactics in there too dude @@zic3902
I have two "realistic violence" copies, but both of them have completely normal discs.

why am I watching this?
Wasn’t there also a misprint with the reviewer quote on certain FF7 copies on the back?
This type of stuff is so interesting to me lol thanks for making this video!
Thanks! Interesting seeing all of these, didn't know there were this many misprints
What about the original release copy did any of those have errors?

The placement of sephiroth in the GHits version and disjointed I are different too.
You should frankenstein the ultimate misprint version! Take the Disc 2 and 3 and place it in with the masterpiece error case
