The CBS Special Presentation clip at the beginning of this just makes this video a whole lot better. You better be sitting down for the next Charlie Brown/Garfield/Bugs Bunny holiday special or you'll miss it till next year!
Crystal Bernard's in that General Foods International Coffees CM. Used to love her as Helen on Wings. This was around the time she was doing the campy horror flick, Slumber Party Massacre II.
I remember seeing these specials when I was a kid. My guess is that they were testing the waters after the success of Garfield and Charlie Brown. Also, gotta love the original CBS Special Presentation bumper.
The man in the Shamitoff commercial is Larry Cedar, who would go on to be a regular on PBS's educational sketch comedy show Square One TV. Sadly most of the show's leads never saw major fame after the series was over, with the late Reg E. Cathey being the notable exception (the series even helped launch his singing career).
yknow I thought I remembered marmaduke having a cartoon... from doing a little research seems it was alongside heathcliff in his first cartoon back in 1981! I also vaguely remember the Cathy and Blondie/Dagwood cartoon.... also didn't 'for better or for worse' have an animated thing? also family circus! ... man remember any of those?!
I feel like crying. My sister's stupid VCR just ate our tape that had this special on it! The exact same broadcast, with a couple of exceptions, because the Washington, DC market had a Zayre commercial and a McDonald's commercial instead of JC Penney's. Such great commercials. STUPID VCR!!!!!!
If you can still get the tape out of it it’s not impossible to respool a VHS tape. Even if part of the tape is broken or damaged you can scotch tape the broken pieces together. I’ve done it before.
4:16 - Wow, just compare the animation in these two specials. At least the Blondie and Dagwood special looks like it was properly animated. The Cathy special looks very rough and sketchy in its artwork, and limited movements. I can tell why the Cathy special never took off.
Not denying the dig on the animation, but it actually won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program that year and was followed by two other specials, "Cathy's Last Resort" in 1988 and "Cathy's Valentine" in 1989.
You're absolutely right. I had forgotten about the other Cathy specials. Thought it was a one-time deal, much like Marvin's special - Baby of the Year.
It's so jarring when the girl in the Johnson & Johnson ad starts talking to the camera. I've never heard of "Shamitoff." That's quite a mouthful. I wonder how long it lasted.
My Sister Sam-R.I.P Rebecca Schafer :( Blondie & Dagwood-this was their only animated special..surprised there was never a series Ragu Thick & Hearty-sauce tasted suspiciously like Prego Roses Are For The Rich-so thats why she"did what she had to do"..the title of the film must have been what he said to her Johnson's Baby Shampoo-so your hair will be easier to comb, that's why.. Burning Rage-Barbara Mandrell and Eddie Albert as action heroes? Cagney & Lacey-Cagney has a drinking problem :( BTW CBS is about to revive this show in the fall.. Dallas-that painting mustve been very expensive Handy Andy -if him and Grabbing Gary were around today, they'd be on the #Metoo list
Blondie had a second special also called "blondies second wedding workout" so they had two plus they were in popeye meets the man who hated laughter tv special.
Love the eighties. Miss the eighties. Long live the eighties.
I remember the Maytag man. Love these commercials!! So good.
Can we all build a time machine and go back to the 80s?

Yup! Can you believe that?
Need a love button just for the opening!
I’m so glad I came across your channel. Brings back a lot of memories. Thank you for uploading!
The 80s! You done it again! Great video BTW!
Thank you for being a channel.

I always liked her too. I think she was on It's A Living around this point.

Yeah, I believe they all did!
I remember these news stories, I grew up in Stockton CA

But the Cathy animation looked spot on as far as replicating the daily comic strip. Cathy had a messy hand drawn look if I remember correctly.
It did, yes. It had actually cleaned up by this time, somewhat, but the early years were very messy.

I loled at Buffy's mom(Krisitne Sutherland) in the Spagetthi sauce commercial

Marmaduke did have a crappy cartoon or two if that concerns you. Not sure about the Lockhorns though.
14:30 You don't always have to be such a show off Denise...
