    Just a small correction: the one that was doing the counting on the backing track for the orchestra in 'A Day in the Life' was Mal Evans, not Geoff Emerick.

    Great comments. Thanks for this. I think the CD (super deluxe) release is fine for me (and have been very happy with it). I do have a quality turntable and maybe if they just released it as single vinyl (as you suggested) I may have been tempted to have picked it up. But I agree with you, the 2 records in the vinyl release pushes the price point beyond something I'm unwilling tolerate. I would rather spend my money on other music. I can't wait for more CD vs. vinyl comparisons.

    I recently got Sgt Pepper's new mono version with the box set and I like it, just ordered the new stereo vinyl. I also have a good new turntable and I am always thinking whether to just buy old analog pressings and cd's for the digital masters, I guess it depends on the specific releases and hopefully the recent return of vinyl will encourage better production quality releases.

    Actually, the 2009 remasters were using the UK Stereo Mixes, not the US Stereo Mixes. The US Mixes were used on the original Capitol Album Vol 1 and 2 that came out between 2002-2004.

    • @horowizard
      @horowizard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think they ever did a dedicated US Mix. There simply wasn't time allotted for something like that. There are major differences in the sound due to the way these were mastered for Vinyl and the quality of the pressings which rendered the UK LP superior in my opinion, but no, they never did dedicated mixes for each continent. Stereo versions were the afterthought anyway. It's inconceivable that they would be done a second time.

    • @milesanddizzy
      @milesanddizzy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      horowizard not remixed in the US, but they added masses of reverb, and the panning of the instruments was different, also the track listing especially in the early LPs is different.

    • @derekgee
      @derekgee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@milesanddizzy - there IS no US mix of Sgt. Peppers. No extra reverb, no track changes by order of the Beatles themselves. US pressings did not contain the runout groove piece, but otherwise the US mono & stereo pressings are from identical tapes.

    Great point on the 2LP issue. My preference if they were doing 2LP would be for the 2nd LP to be the Mono Mix, especially considering how ridiculously expensive the 2014 mix is online.

  • @rollingtroll

    'warmer and richer' is also the way your record player sounds vs your CD Player. There's also record players (or rather; Combinations of player, cart and preamp) that will sound thinner and harsher than any CD player. There's no denying the compression on the CD though. Also kind of 'hilarious' how they always said CD's have a better channel separation yet they compressed both channels in such a way that the soft parts on each channel were limited hard to that maximum of 0dB, causing you to have pretty much no channel separation whatsoever.
    That said, even with a good mix I don't really like a CD. It doesn't have to be harsh, it doesnt'have to be thin, it doesn't have to be compressed. Yet there's no getting around the fact that 44.100 bits of audio per second just isn't quite enough to give a 'smooth' sounding performance. I did hear CD players (The Ayre C7xe is a good example) that got close to a decent record player, but not in the same price range :).

    Interesting analysis. Love the remix on CD. Hoping more remixes are done to compliment the original Mono mixes featured on the 2009 In Mono box. While is makes sense to remix all the albums up to The White Album, what are your thoughts on remixing the final albums, only ever released for Stereo?

    I'm thinking a channel that a channel that compares formats would be very popular and very helpful to a lot of us.
    Thanks.

    Hi TJR, thanks for your honest review of the 2017 Remix of the CD and LP. What's confusing for me is how does the 2014 Remastered Mono LP fit in all of this ? I am not sure whether it's worth investing in this version or not ? I've never owned a Mono Sgt. Pepper before.

      @downtherabbitholephotograp6552 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve they are two different animals. The 2017 stereo remix was influenced heavily by the original mono mix but trust me when I say they are still two different animals. There is no version like the mono mix. If I'd recommend one over the other, I'd say buy the mono reissue.

    Hi TJR,
    I agree the vinyl is much more natural sounding without the harshness in the high frequency range..I don't get this CD brick walling mastering thing at all..I can whack the vinyl pressing up loud and it sounds impactive and dynamic yet the cd copy on the same amp output level is harsh and at times sounds like its playing via an overdrive pedal..It seems counterproductive and ironic to master a cd so loud that you cannot actually play it loud over good speakers without getting earache?

  • @R3TR0R4V3

    Hmm this surely must've been released before the single LP came out, because that's what I ended up getting, unfortunately. Totally kicking myself for not getting the 2LP version! great video tjr, i totally agree with your comparison. one thing i would add about the vinyl version would be, instead of having the 2nd record of session outtakes that record should have been a 180g original mono record
    that to me would make more sense and would make it an altogether viable product. yes i will buy it but only for that first record
    anyway, keep up the good work tjr, excellent channel as always

    My only question is that once a group leaves the recording studio with "their" correct mix,
    is it morally acceptable for someone else to remix their music?

    • @zylbher1
      @zylbher1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sunguar well, what you call the "correct" mix acording to the group is the best one with the technology available then. this New remix is the correct mix with nowadays technology. plus ringo and Paul made their approval of this New remix.

    • @TJRtheOriginal
      @TJRtheOriginal  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sunguar It depends...... In this case the remaining Beatles and their widows get final approval. And Giles Martin is not trying to change it radically. He is trying to be faithful to the Mono mix but bring it into stereo. I don't see this remix as being flippant, casual, a cash grab, or in any way disrespectful to the original.

    • @TJRtheOriginal
      @TJRtheOriginal  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as Ringo or Paul don't "augment" the record with new overdubs - then I think all's well if the word "remix" is used. I understand Entwistle of the Who re-recorded his bass parts on a lot of Who records way back in the day - before CD; if that's true then things get fuzzy.

    I agree with you and the others regarding it being a single record but I think they could have include Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields on a Bonus 45 single, which is the way they were initially released.

    • @ClarenceFisher
      @ClarenceFisher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a way, they sort of did. The single was reissued on Record Store Day 2017. I really wanted it and was disappointed it sold out so quickly until I realized Penny Lane didn't include the mix with the trumpet notes at the fade out. A month later I was furious to discover the US promotional mix was a needle drop from an old record. My one question was "the studio MUST HAVE kept a master tape of that rare mix. Why..."

      +M. Groningen That is a possibility.

  • @alanr4447a
    @alanr4447a 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It also doesn't help that they didn't give a 50th anniversary 'treatment' to the Magical Mystery Tour album. Sure, it wasn't originally one of the Beatles' released albums, but does that make its songs chopped liver? First, of course, there are the actual film songs; but even beyond that, it would've provided an opportunity for a vinyl release to include Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever (the latter of which's 2015 remix totally blows away previous stereo versions). And that doesn't even mention the opportunity to finally eliminate execrable FAKE stereo from more than 50% of "I Am the Walrus", which HAS been achieved with it in the Anthology video DVD release and the MMT film DVD release (as well as in "Love", but that's something different). C'mon, Giles, give release a chance!!

    I sure did like your comparison. I only bought the vinyl version of this but my complaint is the same as yours. I was disappointed when I found out they were not including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever like they did on the 2 cd version. What I think they should've done is like you said, offer a single record version of the remix, and a 3 record set. first record of the remix, second for the sessions, and a third for SFF and Penny Lane. It could've been a 10 inch record for those 2 tracks and their respective sessions, imo.

    oh you are too funny with the guitar out take thing...
    enjoyed your comments
    an interview with george martin revealed that he was opposed to even digitalizing the lp in the 80's for the fear of it sounding too "clinical". others have commented similarly to you about blended vs compartmentalized instrumental sounds, and the overall gestalt of the musical psychelic atmosphere of the album. I like both for what they have to offer though warmth in the cd case being compromised with each mix with vinyl preserving some warmth. I challk up the compartmentilization to our increasing fondness of clarity and the revealing factor akin to the "aha" of uncovering the mystery of a magician's craft (oh, that's how they did that, that's how that sound was made or fused). It is not unlike say smoking a freshly rolled cigar - like a salad, vs. an aged one, like a stew.
    Many purists prefer the stew. I see them as different and therefore about what you like. Having said all that, I prefer the new vinyl. The new vinyl I propose would replicate the "what if" should the Beatles of 67 had the technology of today, took this on tour with orchestra and all, and played it live say, at Lincoln Center or Radio City Music Hall. Just a thought or fantasy IMHO.
    Enjoyed this very much, thank you!

    The only conclusion I can get from this is just one: the (non needed) remix has been made different for LP and CD, so they sound different.
    Well..., obvious.

    The guitar is harsh? What about the massive amounts of awful EQ added to most tracks? Why no clips of the CD versus the vinyl? I'd like to actually hear the vinyl since often times the sound is not as screwed up as the CD.

    late to the party. I've watched your videos on many subjects. I myself liked the vinyl version much better. My understanding from what I've read, the vinyl has no compression and was mastered at 1/2 speed. I transferred my vinyl to cd and that is my go to when traveling also.
    So far a/b the new 2018 White Album material, I find the stereo field being brought more towards the center, it is much wider in the 2009 remasters; at least for the few songs I've heard so far. Really want Rubber Soul and Revolver remixed. Take care

    The CD release has gaps between the songs. The gaps totally ruin the experience of Sgt Peppers mind trip.

    Given that you have a proper mastering and a high quality pressing, Vinyl always sounds better, especially in cases where the source material is analog. Having dealt professionally in both mediums, I have my reasoning why this is so. I don't understand the egg-headed computer math people who claim analog is shit. They will come up with every chart and formula in the book to show why, but in the end they just come off as dolts. On another point, it would make sense for a Stereo mix to be 'Brick-walled' if it were emulating a Mono mix. Basically I like and enjoy the new remix. It benefits from the best of all the new technology (not all of what's new is always good). I don’t mind the the new clarity is too much. The way I look at it is if they had the technology then, they most certainly would have used it, so in that way it can be justified.

    Why not have in the 2nd vinyl , the MONO version that the Beatles even said is the best way to listen to "Pepper" 1.) I have the original 1967 Sgt. Pepper in stereo only not mono vinyl. 2.) The 2009 Stereo Version in vinyl, I have it in mono on cd but not vinyl. 3.) Now 2017 version's none of the vinyl versions are in mono!?? what gives?? Why hold this back from us?? The Beatles themselves wanted us to hear Pepper in Mono on vinyl. All these sessions/and different takes/ they are all on bootlegged versions that have been out for years on end. Give us Pepper in MONO!!! Sorry for venting

    I always thought this was the worst mixed Beatle's LP. Ringo's drums often are drounded out and I hate when the drums, base or vocals are on one side. Lennon hated that as well. The White Album and Abby Rload were the best produced Beatle album's.

    Thanks for an interesting review. I do not own the 2017 Vinyl LP but I bought the Deluxe CD pack, for reasons I have not evaluated the Lux Pack properly it was the original Mono Mix i was most curious about.
    However, I bought the 2012 digitally remastered LP version of Abbey Road and I found it "too sharp" compared to the original 1969 which I also own. I put the 1969 version sound quality and dynamics well over the 2012 version.
    I think the remixed CD version of SGTP in the DLP is a bit on the sharp side and those parts clearly boosted to bring it closer to the mono version seems too overboosted for my liking.
    The clearly best sound in my view is the 2009 Digital Apple USB Format Box Set, Limited Edition, Compilation Memory Stick 226 × File, FLAC, Remastered, Stereo, 24-bit 44.1 kHz
    In my view one get a phenomenal quality and detail lift and it is so good that it is on the verge of frightening, a different level, a different world. The details in the 2017 DLP stereo remix which are worked up is clearly there on the FLAC set.
    I may mention that I play these USB/FLAC files on my MAC transferring the digital signals directly into the power amplifier´s built in D/A converter so it plays it plain/beautiful on the verge of frightening.
    I recommend you to get hold of one of these USB/FLAC items as it holds all the Beatles Studio Albums. It could be a good reference. I think it sounds like vinyl at factor of X at the power of x.
    Again, nice and interesting review, vinyl may well sound best of the bunch.

    I didn't watch but the vinyl has more warmth and the CD sounds unnatural and digital. I hate listening to digital crap, I listen to vinyl on TH-cam because it's pure analog sound and not digital crap

    Pepper 50th is the most misguided remix of a classic album ever. The mixing and especially the mastering is schizophrenic and amateurish.
