You are correct. Beatbox evolves quickly. Every year, I always assumed it’s impossible for them to top the following year but they always do. What you might think is impossible now, will be done in a year or two.
I could be wrong but I believe Hiss was only 16 years old during this battle. He was the youngest competitor that year for sure. This was my favorite battle in 2017.

For sure man, do you think the skill level in beatboxing grows exponentially rather than linearly every year? Every year I feel like the skill level is huge in comparison with the previous year (same goes for looping). And yes NaPoM's bass gives me eargasm lol
I remember thinking "there's no way you could produce genuine bass" and then Ball-Zee/Napom started doing liprolls. Beatbox never stops surpassing it's limits

Hiss is definitely one of the top beatboxers of all time, probably top 10 if you want to put it on a scale. I mean he is a 2 time champion of a whole continent of Asia, he was a GBB vice champ (2017 in this video) and 3rd place in 2018, he was the Korean champ 2018 also, and most recently BBU online battle champion in 2022. Usually when he enters a battle he gets pretty far or at least is a part of banger battles like the one against River(top 16) in 2021 that you reacted to. Now he is more orientated on producing than beatboxing which you can see on his channel. He makes remixes of beatbox routines and also some original produced electronic songs. And the thing he does that I love the most is he collaborates with top tier beatboxers to make songs that are absolute masterpieces and you definitely need to check them out. ''If only ( Hiss, River, Colaps and Alexinho)'' is a must watch and very recently ''Hiss, Gene, Napom - Fading'' and note these tracks are produced but the sounds are all from their mouths
Yeah "If Only" and "Fading" were produced in a way that it is actually still possible to recreate the track live. Which makes it more dope.

Hiss is a good beatboxer, but he’s an amazing producer. He did the whole opener for GBB ‘21, the Swissbeatbox country feature week for Korea he’s produced all sounds for those guys (which is why they sounded extra crisp). His remixes of a few of the ‘21 wildcards 🤯 definitely recommend The one he did for Stitch, but they’re all fire 🔥. He has soo much good content.

Hiss is a mf MONSTER!!! He is a world class beatboxer. To me, his best routine is "Show me" The man is always on point. He won the BBU competition, which was a beatboxing contest with many world class competitors. In the BBU, most routines were edited to clean them up... The video you reviewed "Collard Greens" by King Inertia was an entry in BBU. You might wanna just review the whole competition! It has so many fantastic routines and awesome videos!

Hiss is an OG, he is a world class producer. He drops sick remixes of some the sickest routines of all the artists. He also has incredible stuff of his own. He is very respected in the scene, as well as Napom. Both OG's, maybe even both previous GBB champs, Napom is forsure.
Hiss is like 17 in this battle. His stuff now is legendary. Gotta checkout the BBU. It's a online battle that Hiss destroyed

Hiss is up there, this is the furthest he’s gotten at GBB. He was also 16 at the time I think, so he was a bit of a prodigy, though he never made it to the top. But he’s also helps produce a lot of beatbox music videos that are very popular.

Some times they can be talking about redoing a pattern for their beat. Kick in the same spot, snare in the same spot, etc. People will add sounds to make the beat fill out or more or to flex technicality. Or at least thats how I have viewed it since the Codfish vs Bataco battle.
You gotta see napoms 2016 elimination this elimination took the scene to a different level.

Hiss can definitely compete amongst the top, he made it into gbb21 even after all the previous years. But where Hiss truly shines is in his songwriting and production skills. Please check out anything from Hiss in the BBU. it's a beatboxing competition where the contestants can use plug-ins like reverb and delay and even some pitch correction to a certain degree. It's an insane competition

You are totally accurate! The leap in technicality from 2017-current is crazy. And it's only gonna get better with young talents like - ZVD, Kohey, Max, Footboxg is a legend, Remix and the kid he battled, etc

the only difference from back then till now is the styles. it's more songs now and it was more beats back then. as for what's better or harder is just preference. I prefer the classics over todays new new school.

Codfish vs napom
I think the biggest jump in beatbox history is the jump from 2018 to 2019. I'm saying this like for example: Codfish won GBB 2018 because of his style and his clean "unique" bass. However, he didn't even make it into the top 3 in 2019 because the stuff that Codfish did was considered common and wasn't as impressive anymore. The elephant in that competition of course is D-low's progression from 2018 to 2019. After 2019, D-low has only been a judge. I believe this is the same thing that happened to Saro where D-low is now too impressive to compete for GBB, so he decides to judge instead.
(I know this is a thesis long comment, but please bear with me, lol)
On D-low's channel he talks about how he belives that he is the best in the world and saw that Colaps is the 2nd best in 2019. Beatbox evolves all the time and we can only try to imagine what it'll be like continuing on.
Hard disagree. 2018 to 2019 seems like a huge jump because the competition for 2018 was objectively mid, while 2017 was widely regarded as the best GBB ever. The "jump" probably wouldn't be as big if it was 2017 to 2019.
@Helldog6 Yeah, I guess it was considered a big jump for me because that was around the time when I started being apart of the community in tournaments, and one time all I did was do a low bass close to the mic and everyone instantly said I won. Then 2019 came and I asked the people that were judging that tournament why I won with something so simple and they said that it wasn't common at the time.
Long story short, I might just think this from personal experiences, lol
