I'm the sort of person who watches this and says "Tunisia was a French colony."
Definitely a missed opportunity. PS: Still owning French Guyana, the remnant French colonial empire is larger than remnant British belongings.

At least for this theatrical production the colonizer used an actual ethnic minority to play the ethnic minority. It's way more believable than using brown or black paint.
And the paint is a waste, anyways. Masks are much easier on the actor and the audience.

To be fair, in most of these cases the Governments were actually opposed to harming the natives but the local colonists didn't care. Isabella/Ferdinand/Charles V wanted no natives harmed but all the Spanish crossing the sea were all about wealth and Spain had no real way to control them or care. Most the Spanish army was fighting in the Italian Wars.

If the British, French, and Germans had not been interested in archaeology and artifacts from antiquity, I dare say most would have been destroyed by the continuous wars in much of the world. Many peoples who now live in various lands and are indignant that artifacts from those lands reside in museums are themselves not native. Humanity is like the tides, always changing. It’s good to preserve history.

1:45 - jobs for locals, keep them out of trouble - yes! The real reason for establishing canal colonies - improving agricultural techniques etc. wasn't just to increase revenues but also to "settle uncivilized tribes" - show them it was in their better interests to take up farming than continue with raiding & banditry 😜
All jokes aside, I think it's important to mention that for the majority of the time the British were actually extremely respectful and catered to the natives across the Empire. Thankfully they were able to put an end to things such as slavery, burning widows alive, ending tribal warfare, etc.
