    Introduction to Taonga Puoro: Kōauau
    by Jerome Kavanagh
    Te tangi o te Kōauau
Made from bone, wood, stone, leaves, seaweed, stems, or gourd, the Kōauau is the most common of all Taonga Puoro. But where does its name come from? And how is it related to man’s furry best friend? In this session, Jerome shows how this ancient cross-blown flute resonates with the song of the object from which it's made, and of the natural environment from whence it comes. You’ll learn about the Whakapapa (genealogy) of the Kōauau, hear its haunting cry, and discover that Taonga Puoro have unique personal names, just like we do.
E mihi kau ana ki a koe Jerome mō tō pūmanawa me ō pūkenga e whakaatuhia ana i te kaupapa o te Kōauau.

    Kia Ora Jerome!
I inherited a koauau of my dad when he passed 10 years ago. I always wore around my neck as a little tribute and reminder of him. When people asked if I could play it I would usually make a Sisley excuse as to why I couldn’t make a sound out of it although I would go home and try. But after 10 years I stumbled across this video of yours and in the first few seconds of watching you play I finally got my first propper sound out of it! Ka mihi nui ehoa!! Thank you for the Kete wanaka o Te toaka koauau! 🙏
