Things I've learnt working from home: - laundry is way easier when you can just hang it up on your lunch break - my brain power sweet spot is 8 - 4 - my job is really REALLY boring - my phone needs to be on noise mode somewhere else in the flat for concentration - some of my anxiety is directly correlated to talking to one of my bosses - seagulls LOVE going through your bins - despite being sea birds, they don't like half a pint of water being thrown on them - I met the bin fairies who clean our yard with a scoop from said seagull vandalism - seagulls will kill and eat rats - seagulls are terrifying - there's less distractions in the bedroom and I won't eat half the fridge if I can't see it - your boss is probably as bored as you, let them know when you run out of work and you'll probably get Friday afternoon off along with the rest of your team👍
In uni I would literally pile all my devices behind my open laptop screen until I was done with the essay or whatever. Having it all out of sight was super handy and then when I closed the screen, hello entertainment friends, what a prize for finishing work.
On an Android, the black and white setting is called "wind down mode" if that helps anyone! I find it helpful to help me sleep at night but sounds like it would be good to stop procrastination too!
"How to avoid post lunch slump?" Just skip lunch. ...I know that sounds so unhealthy but hear me out! If i have something that NEEDS to be done in the afternoon (like a meeting that i cannot just be in coma at) i will have something super light, tiny portion for lunch. Like a fruit, of small bowl of soup. Then, when i've got that thing done at like 4, i will have ANOTHER small meal. And then dinner at normal time at like 7.
There is a Google extension I used for when I was in school and would get distracted by social media when I needed to write a paper. It's called Tomato Timer and it does 25 min of work sites 5 min of free sites. You can set what sites are work sites and what are free sites. It helped so much with work I didn't want to do but had to do.
I find the best way of minimising my post lunch slump is to make sure I eat something which gives slow release energy all afternoon and is filling without being heavy. I also read something totally unrelated to work over said lunch break so I feel as if I've had a longer break than I have and return to work fresher. Plus thinking about my book and longing to get back to it motivates me to get through the afternoons tasks quicker!
My tip for the post lunch slump is to do something active right after lunch. I have the ability still to go for a nice walk in the chilly air which wakes me right up. But sometimes I do some workout after lunch (don't eat too much then).
Being compassionate for ourself: Many of us are learning how to do this for first time (or at least, for so many days in a row). Don't expect to be awesome at it immediately! (and hope your boss also understands this/please explain it to them).
I am working from home, and it's the least stressed I've been since I took this job. I feel so much better physically and mentally working at home that I wish I could remain at home to work when this is over. Loved how you ended the video! Lol :)
My way to deal with my phone is to have it plugged into my stereo or a speaker elsewhere, playing some form of music I can work well to. As a uni student who sprained their knee, I had to find a way to do my assessments without the distractions. Getting up at a good time everyday (and yes, I include weekends, get up and get that morning walk or watch something on tv) helps a lot too.
"Please try t not work from your bed". Me, working from bed because we leave in a cupboard (under stairs yes) and it's the only space availabe : "Oups."
I think the best way out of a post lunch slump is gentle exercise! I’d say save your hardcore for in the mornings before work or after you finish, but a short walk/yoga video for those who could do it can be like a human reset button! Good luck everyone 🌞
This is so interesting that my most productive hours are pretty much the opposite of yours! I'm most productive in the afternoon, I eat my lunch at 12 so by the time I've finished my lunch break at 1pm I have the whole afternoon ahead of me. First thing in the morning I am at my most useless, I swear it takes me an hour for my brain to get into gear, even if I do stuff before work!!
My post lunch issue for all my life has been that I WILL fall asleep. I would constantly fall asleep in classes and meetings, even ones I really loved! However, one thing that helped was that if I could lay down for 20 minutes after eating, I could get up and be perfectly fine! Sometimes you just gotta embrace the slump in order to overcome it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The part about acknowledging different circumstances is so so important! I'm a speech and language therapist and we were fortunate enough to be able to work from home. We were able to video call pretty much all our clients. My partner and I were both working from home and we made the kitchen table my work space and he got the computer room, as he needed the screens and computer more then I did. We don't have kids yet, so working from home wasn't too bad. One of my collegues however I.e., has a two year old walking around. So she wasn't able to put the same amount of hours and videocalling in as I was. I would be lying if I said it wasn't frustrating at times, but I would remind myself what the differences are and that it isn't permanent, and just completely fine. One of our shared clients however... Completely escalated and shouted on the phone because she "wasn't putting in the same amount of effort" and "wasn't flexibele or doing enough"... Very frustrating
I've found I've had to go back to setting timers to remind myself of breaks and lunches (something I had trouble remembering to do when I converted from customer service to an office job) so I actually get up and move around a bit and stretch beyond hopping up to use the toilet and get a drink. Otherwise I will get caught in a trap of sitting in front of my couch setup and ending up a stiff and pained lump by the end of the day. So, I have an alarm for about 2 hours after I start, and I get up and do a couple laps around my apartment building, then at noon one to take lunch, then another about 2 hours after I get back from lunch, etc. Also, I am right there with you on the posture thing, especially working from my couch. I think I need to dig up my old posture correcting harness thing that I got off Amazon ages ago and start wearing it for at least part of the day.
@@morehannah lol. Yeah. It's basically two loops of some thick material that go round the front of your shoulders and meet in the back to pull/hold them back in a correct position for good posture. I think mine was like $15 on Amazon.
I actually like planning what to do in the morning because I struggle with starting to do the work, so planning the work makes it less 'intimidating' :D
I've been working from home since mid-March. Until today, I've really struggled with my mental stability and creating a divide between home and work. I found myself "finishing" at my finish time but continued thinking about work or responding to e-mails/Skype messages on my work phone for another hour or longer. Combine that with not stepping outside or even having the motivation to do so and you end up with quite a toxic environment that simply isn't healthy. Over this past weekend, I decided that enough was enough and spoke to some friends and family about how I felt. Doing this has changed my mindset and helped lift me out of my rut. Now, I've managed to do my first session of yoga with a creator here on TH-cam during my lunch break, which felt really good and helped calm my mind after the morning shenanigans. After work, I shut everything down immediately, stowed it away and went for a 20-30m walk, which has allowed for that clear divide between home and work that I was missing. I then followed up with a new workout routine! Now, as I type this before bed, I can say that today has been one of the best WFH days I've had. I intend to maintain this new schedule to come out of this situation healthier, both mentally and physically. Thanks for the video Hannah! Apologies for the slight wall of text. 😅
I study from home now and it's going great, I love it! I get my reading for the day done in the morning, then I eat breakfast and have a shower. My lecture is on video call between 10 and 12, then I have a 1 hour lunch break and then it's back to video call again for practical or group assignments. If I don't have anything in the afternoon I do dishes.
I feel like it's quite different working for yourself and working for someone else, when working from home. I actually enjoy my job and the work I do, but I still sometimes struggle to find the motivation to not get distracted. I think it's just the difference between working to make a difference in your own life or someone else's! Least that's how I see it. I've worked at home several times before now, so I knew I could cope, but I've had to rethink some things since it's such an extended period of time. I'm creating a new routine, rather than trying to fit my old one with commuting and being in the office, that works for being at home. Mostly it's giving myself half an hour in the morning to chill with some chores or a game (Animal Crossing is taking over my life man) before I then start work in order to make a differentiation of "this is when I start work". Also trying to have a 5 minute break every hour or so - it definitely helps with stopping being distracted so much!
Ooh I love the comments and the sharing of tips! Mine is, I eat light, cold things during the day and a bigger meal after I stop, or if that can't be done, I'll push lunch later so that there's less to do after lunch and knowing I'll be out soon gets me through the afternoon work better! The only thing is, it takes planning then to not forget eating altogether.
My housemate and I put our phones on airplane mode, lock them, and then swap phones with each other for a set amount of time (normally an hour or so at a time that we agree upon when we're both going to focus on work).
I am a student and I was supposed to spend the next month intensely studying for my IB finals but then they were cancelled (which has literally never happened before) so I found myself with a lot of time in my hands. Your content helps with that though, so thank you
My life hasn't changed that much I've always worked at home, but really found my productivity is knocked now that the jobs I was working to be ready to start no longer exist...plus I'm preparing to travel back to the UK from the USA where I'll have to quarantine in a tiny dark room alone because I have vulnerable housemates. It's literally my bed a bookcase and a tiny window. I'm dreading it.
Great video Hannah and as always some great organisational tips. You have totally inspired me and want to do my own video on the same topic as a great idea.
Thank you sm for this vid!! I'm not working but i have been doing online work for college, conference calls all that stuff & having mental breakdowns 😅 I find it super hard to focus if I'm not in the right frame of mind & to motivate myself to do it! Luckily we have a break now but this will be super helpful if we're still home next term & also for the lump of work thats lagged into this weekend! Thank you 🧡
Socialising: talk to colleagues more! Make a daily call maybe, allow yourselves time to be social - if you wouldn't normally be social in official meets or catchups but have banter and kitchen moments/water cooler chats/.. for instance during day, that banter is valuable and should replace it with something else social instead.
It's really basic, but I just force myself to get it done. no matter how much I may not want to do something I ignore that impulse and move forward anyway.
A good habit I've had over quarantine is actually setting a time for my meals. On normal school days, I would snack every single break time (we had 2 aside from our lunch break), and I would even eat another snack on the way home. Now, I set up eating times. When my alarm rings at 7:30 (yes, I still have an alarm 😂), I force myself to do a workout and eat breakfast. I don't eat again until 12 noon for lunch, and I snack at 3 PM after my online class. The next time I eat is at 8 for dinner. Trying to get rid of the snack time rn because I feel like it's unnecessary, but hey, at least I'm on 4 meals now instead of 6 😂
Thanks Hannah for recommending Todoist! I've started using it after you recommended it in a previous video and it's been really helping me. Even though I still over plan what to do for a day, I beat myself up way less now that I know at the start of the day that by the sheer number of things to do I will not do all of them today
Loved this, I feel like you touched on stuff that other blogs and articles I’ve read didn’t. I’ve been working from home for about 2 weeks now. I’m really grateful and lucky to have a dining room which I’m using as my office where I can shut the door at the end of the day. Also super. Grateful o my work for letting me take my computer and monitors home with me. It’s a hard situation but good to be able to find things I’m still grateful for 💛
More Hannah The importance of being open/not hinting with housemates/partners etc and actually sitting down and being like “right, how are we going to do this” is so simple but equally so important something I haven’t heard people mention really. Also, about using social media as your job, and finding yourself sucked in because of that and snapping back to realisation is something I haven’t heard many people mention. I use social media as part of my job and understand that a lot™️. Also when you said you worried that Dan would think you’re not working, when you’re actually using social media is a moooodd. (Although, i only get this in the office really!) Anyway, I hope that helped. And thank you for the great content as usual ☺️
My mum and I have turned our front room into our office; because we both have different productivity times (hers 9-5, mine is typically 8pm-3am) we've not had issues with needing the privacy of the office. There's stuff I can get done elsewhere in the house during other hours, from uni assignments to society magazine work/ freelance writing jobs, or just reading a book! (This video also reminded me to re-download Forest for my phone - it was super helpful during exams so idk why I uninstalled it!!)
I live in a one bed flat in Manchester so it's quiet and easy to create a good environment to work, but it's so boring these days. for the post lunch slump, I avoid carbs for lunch as I find that exacerbates it. I also do the most important and hardest tasks in the morning and leave the quicker easier stuff for the afternoon
I was hoping you would talk about Pomodoro Timer--I swear by that method! I was literally watching this video during one of those breaks. I've been using this method for the last 2 years of grad school and it works really well: I use the Tide App and do 25 minutes focus, 10 minutes of TH-cam while doing suduko, 25 minutes focus, 10-15 minutes of TH-cam, etc. I definitely take a longer break than recommended, but it's the focusing part of the method that has always been the key for me. During that time, I don't check anything--phone notifications, Facebook, Instagram, etc.--although I do let myself check my time process so I know "okay, 5 more minutes then I can check my phone." For me, it works best for tasks that require focusing on one thing--reading, writing, working a spreadsheet, etc. Doing other tasks, I typically will use a break to complete look away from a screen--get up and walk around, take a break, etc. It works well there too. Best of luck for anyone who tries it!
I'm super struggling with RSI at the moment because of working from home instead of at the office, my hands and arms are super painful, even though my work set-up is fine. It's super frustrating, because I can't work normal hours anymore, but I'm learning to accept that I'm doing the best I can.
Be really careful to take RSI seriously! It can lead to permanent impairment. :( I'm thankfully not at that point, but I've been struggling with cycles of "pain in my X" and then compensating for that leading to "pain in my Y" and then compensating for that leading to "pain in my Z", etc. I have to focus on making sure that everything is in a state where it can be at least okay, taking periodic breaks, changing positions, etc.
@@MathAndComputers I am taking it seriously, thank you for your comment! :) I was struggling with it a couple of years back and had therapy for it, so I've been doing those exercises again. Fortunately my manager is very understanding, and I'm only working a couple of hours a day with lots of breaks in between.
The extra effect of unusual aches and pains from getting used to different chair at home and forgetting to sit healthily (or anything to do with different environment - dryer or moister air, warmer/cooler, dustier, ...) is that of course easy to then be paranoid that you're getting ill or experiencing symptoms. 😬
I'm having to do school work at home and it's annoying, because it should be the holidays now, but we have to do work this week for the entire day, so I feel both cross that I don't have this as holiday time and guilty that I'm not working as well as I should be. I kind of miss the structure of the school day - at least at school you know when to focus.
I’m procrastinating by watching your video😂 but tbh it’s Saturday... I feel like we all get too caught up in the idea we need to productive all of the time, when really we need some rest too. 😌
Ever since you mentioned Todoist in another video, I've been using it everyday - for both my master thesis and daily tasks. Really like it! So, thanks for recommending it! :D
I only need a healthy amount of pressure (like a lot of work... but not too much) and working from home is relatively easy. Relatively because I also have a toddler at home. And sometimes he just wants to be with his mama. Also relatively because I have a fridge at home as well. 🤷♀️
I think I would enjoy working from home if I was self employed and if the world was normal! Currently finding it hard to distinguish between work time and home time because everything is the same and there’s no where else to go. Also finding WFH for an employer tricky because communication isn’t going as smoothly as it could because it takes colleagues so long to reply to my emails and Teams messages and I can’t just go over and ask them 🙄
As someone doing A-Levels atm this helps a little. When I'm at home working I work so much better in the afternoon and evening after dinner (I think it's because I have the mindset of when I get everything done I can sleep and it stops me procrastinating) but teachers are setting three times the amount of work we normally get and then saying we have to get it done and emailed in the normal lesson time slot. How do I get myself to do work during this time when no matter what I do I fall behind and then need more sleep?! If anyone has advice it would be good as on "Easter holiday" atm and have to go back to doing lessons next week. P.s. sorry for ranting but any help would be appreciated greatly!
I don’t use my phone for that kind of thing... so I still get distracted by all of that stuff but on my laptop instead. And I can’t turn off the internet because I need it for my job. Blocking websites didn’t work because I would just go onto a different browser. I know. That’s weird. But I have an iPad and a laptop. Why do I need to have it all on my phone too?
Super helpful, thank you!! I'm trying to keep to my goal of "one video per week" but I'm giving myself permission to acknowledge that since my channel is about my mental health... I should be making my mental health a priority right now, not work and that siiiiick adsense revenue lmfao 😂 (sarcasm; not making enough to stress about it too much anyway - silver lining!)
At the moment I have so many things to do I can't concentrate at all ever and have done nothing but play animal crossing and tetris what do I dooooooooooo. I'm supposed to be working on my Honours project at the moment but the house constantly being a mess makes me think I need to be cleaning but doing anything but my project makes me think I need to be doing my project so I do nothing RIP
Everyone around me is talking about eating all the time...and here is me queen of rationing eating half the normal amount, which is let's be honest not enough. I need help
Things I've learnt working from home:
- laundry is way easier when you can just hang it up on your lunch break
- my brain power sweet spot is 8 - 4
- my job is really REALLY boring
- my phone needs to be on noise mode somewhere else in the flat for concentration
- some of my anxiety is directly correlated to talking to one of my bosses
- seagulls LOVE going through your bins
- despite being sea birds, they don't like half a pint of water being thrown on them
- I met the bin fairies who clean our yard with a scoop from said seagull vandalism
- seagulls will kill and eat rats
- seagulls are terrifying
- there's less distractions in the bedroom and I won't eat half the fridge if I can't see it
- your boss is probably as bored as you, let them know when you run out of work and you'll probably get Friday afternoon off along with the rest of your team👍
These are some great learnings!! (especially about the seagulls)
Seagulls are white feathered dive bombers, we have had a lot of trouble with them attacking people in the parking lot at work. I don't miss them :-)
@@zapfanzapfan omg that sounds horrible D:
seagulls - every coastal dwelling humans worst enemy. but at least they aren't fond of swinging bags and paper missiles.

Trying to get rid of the snack time rn because I feel like it's unnecessary, but hey, at least I'm on 4 meals now instead of 6 😂
The sensations packet issue is me.. all day.. every day...
I just love them too much
I love them
Thanks Hannah for recommending Todoist! I've started using it after you recommended it in a previous video and it's been really helping me. Even though I still over plan what to do for a day, I beat myself up way less now that I know at the start of the day that by the sheer number of things to do I will not do all of them today
I’m excited to hear your advice after my online lecture, I’m slowly getting used to working at home!! I hope you’re doing well ❤️
Ooooh, exactly what I need. Badly. I am atrocious at working from home and suddenly doing a lot of it. Thank you, Hannah. :)
It’s a hard situation but good to be able to find things I’m still grateful for 💛
Glad you found it useful! Would be interested to know which points you think I covered that you hadn’t found elsewhere? Thanks! ☺️
(Although, i only get this in the office really!)
Anyway, I hope that helped.
(This video also reminded me to re-download Forest for my phone - it was super helpful during exams so idk why I uninstalled it!!)
oh I love that!
Classic Dan quote “it’s because I don’t care” 🤣🤣🤣
I live in a one bed flat in Manchester so it's quiet and easy to create a good environment to work, but it's so boring these days. for the post lunch slump, I avoid carbs for lunch as I find that exacerbates it. I also do the most important and hardest tasks in the morning and leave the quicker easier stuff for the afternoon
Smart!!
John LondonBiMeetup well I’m not “paranoid”, I know what I feel thank you very much.
@@Larissa_KD sorry I didn't mean to imply thats what you were doing, I was speaking personally and that could be relelevant for others too.
perfeect timiiing I should be writing my master thesis right noooowwww I needed this
Ever since you mentioned Todoist in another video, I've been using it everyday - for both my master thesis and daily tasks. Really like it! So, thanks for recommending it! :D
I didn't realise how much i needed this video. Thank you!
I only need a healthy amount of pressure (like a lot of work... but not too much) and working from home is relatively easy. Relatively because I also have a toddler at home. And sometimes he just wants to be with his mama. Also relatively because I have a fridge at home as well. 🤷♀️
This is great. Thanks Hannah!
Great advise Hannah! Thank you.
I am doing WFH.. Now I became a professional cook🤩. Watching Serials etc.
Thanks for the video! It's really helped me ♥️ p.s. can you tell us what lipstick you're using? It's lovely!
It’s a super old one from topshop - probably shouldn’t be putting it on my face
YES I NEEDED THIS.
You’re welcome Ali!
Really useful video, thanks Hannah. Still might end up mad though! Colitis sufferer, living alone, just told to isolate for twelve weeks...deep joy 😞
Uuuhhh hope you manage to get everything you need and do lots of video calls!!
Me rn: doing hw from my bed because the only tables are downstairs and my family is watching tv right now . I would really like a desk
I think I would enjoy working from home if I was self employed and if the world was normal! Currently finding it hard to distinguish between work time and home time because everything is the same and there’s no where else to go. Also finding WFH for an employer tricky because communication isn’t going as smoothly as it could because it takes colleagues so long to reply to my emails and Teams messages and I can’t just go over and ask them 🙄
You are my procrastination :-)
Live these videos. ♥️♥️
What’s your favorite Pringles flavor? Mine is Ranch. 🤤
Me, a supermarket worker: *wishing I could work from home*
I watched this while working from home. 🙈
I finished your video in black and white ;)
I don’t use my phone for that kind of thing... so I still get distracted by all of that stuff but on my laptop instead. And I can’t turn off the internet because I need it for my job. Blocking websites didn’t work because I would just go onto a different browser.
I know. That’s weird. But I have an iPad and a laptop. Why do I need to have it all on my phone too?
Some newer androids have a "Focus Mode" which blocks off certain apps and blocks notifications
Do u ever look at your phone to check the time then get distracted and forget to check
Listening to this while working in my bed.... I feel attacked right now.
If you have a significant post-lunch slump then you're eating the wrong foods. At least, in my experience.
I need help
"please please don't work from your bed"
*Most disabled people working from bed* 😒 I know right... But no choice...
It looks like most of these questions came from one person..
You could just skip lunch
But hunger...
