I don't know why this guy is (or most closet invaders, actually) but I like the way he manages to describe sustaining interest and enthusiasm. I used to feel like that. Then the "I've seen them all" (or I know all variations of storyline devices) lethargy comes over me. Criterion will have to shake me out of my complacency and turn me into an enthusiastic 20y-o again. Rohmer doesn't do that for me, though. When I was twenty, he made me feel forty. What I'd **really** love to see is a director or actor come in and only point out the movies on the shelves that they hate. Just someone with the balls to be like, "You know, I fucking hate Godard/Renoir/Malick/Bergman/Varda/Dreyer/All That Jazz/Rules of the Game/Salò/8 1/2/Three Women/Persona; they didn't influence me in any way, they didn't change my life, I'm not in awe of them, I don't view them as holy monuments of cinema that I have to speak of in hushed tones, they don't have a hallowed spot on my video shelf at home, I'm not obsessed with them, I actually cannot sit through them without feeling like I'm being tortured; I don't even want to hear about them anymore and I don't care what anyone thinks about that" and then pull those films off the shelves and stomp on them violently. Just one person to do it. That would be six million views instantly.

i don't know what the "criteria" are for making it into the collection, but...I hate the fact that some movies seem to go straight in without (or before) even having a standard DVD release.
It feels like more of a marketing ploy than an artistic acknowledgement.
(An attempt to grab modern indie sales straight out of the gate).
I mean, shouldn't there be a period of time that must pass before a movie can be voted on or become eligible???
(kind of like what they do when electing hall of fame candidates in various sports???)
