Many years ago, I was delivering some props to Bray Studios in England. Willem Dafoe suddenly rushed up to me, in costume, and asked me anxiously if I knew where in the studio they were filming 'Victory' because he was starring in it but had got lost! I said I didn't know where they were filming it but I'd try and help him find it, and together we got him to the set in the end. He was lovely! Willem, if you ever read this - you are an absolute gent.
He's like a kid in a candy store!! I absolutely love his enthusiasm!! It reminds me of the increasingly-rare time people can have these moments in a video store. And the several hours I used-to spend exploring the aisles, humorously observing what other people were talking about movies as they would pick something out to rent or to buy. It's an experience much more lively than a bookstore or library, and it has gone by the wayside. I don't feel old saying this either. I feel like an antique fly on the wall.
I like Willem Defoe so much. Always have liked him. Great look, great voice, great actor. Great Goblin! Did a fantastic job. The part could not have been cast better.
Willem is such a different person to most of his character roles. His characters are often uncomfortable and cold but he is so warm and has such a positive attitude. Seems like a really nice guy.
Willem Dafoe is a certified legend of cinema (Platoon, Spiderman, The Lighthouse). Congratulations Willem on your HWOF star, you're a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ actor!
I've been following his career since I saw a screening of "The Loveless" some 40 years ago. I saw "Streets of Fire" and "To Live and Die in L.A." over the next couple of years, and then finally "Platoon". I've been following him religiously ever since. Kills me when people ONLY know the Green Goblin. He's given so many masterful performances.
He is an actor who gets even better with age (like a fine, stout wine). Platoon was excellent and his work in recent films such as The Florida Project and The Lighthouse cement his status in my personal pantheon of favorite actors. Michael Shannon and Daniel Day-Lewis are also amongst that throng of thespians.
As a Gen Z guy who knew him first from Spider-Man, I agree entirely. The guy has had so many roles in both blockbuster and arthouse films. His Goblin is iconic, but he has been in so many classics over the years and he's carried every poor film he's starred in.
He is amazing in New Rose Hotel (a William Gibson short story, so it's cyberpunk but on the corporate side of the genre). It's basically just him and Christopher Walken doing crazy dialogs with Gibson Corp jargon, with some Asia Argento thrown in there for a bit.
These videos being me back the good old dvd days man. There’s something about physically picking out movies and reading the back. Streaming is too easy. You feel more connected to the movie when you drive somewhere and get it or consume it via video store or the movie theater. Thank you for this, truly.
What an addition to the closet family! And what amazing picks! Onibaba, The Leopard, Gate Of Flesh, Rosselini set, The Mirror, Piano Teacher, 8 1/2 (one of my all-time top 5), Life Aquatic - and more... Willem and I love the same films - he would _love_ my own personal collection! 😄 Of course, one of the best episodes yet 🤩 PS. Can't wait to see Poor Things!
Dafoe is always great, but his role in Poor Things just blew me away! He once said that he likes to play characters that draw the audience to the world they’re depicting and him as Godwin Baxter really shows. In one brilliant stroke of comedy in the opening of the film, he completely disarmed me and told me to just enjoy the experience. And what an experience that was! I know it might be a bit premature to say this, but, in my opinion, Poor Things is one of the greatest Films I have ever seen! Everything is note-perfect! Especially Dafoe’s funny, touching and unique work!
Willem elevates every camera shot or scene he is ever part of, and if he has any dialogue it becomes a moment of perfection. Absolutely love this man. Thanx.
Seeing Will taking Ashes and Diamonds warms my heart. I was blessed to see it in cinema. Cult classic here in Poland. I recommend to watch more Z. Cybulski movies, all are great!
After reading about Ashes and Diamonds in film books when I was young back in the '70s I was beyond thrilled when Embassy put this movie on its International Collection VHS series in the mid 1980s in the U.S. (along with the other films in Wajda's war trilogy). There was one local video store that catered to higher-brow movie tastes just because the owner was a badass and progressive and he had these movies. I was a loyal customer. Man was still alive in his 90s as of two years ago. His memory was fading but I was glad to talk to him one more time. The original novel of Ashes and Diamonds is even greater, but it's a hard book to find. Luckily I own it. Amazing read.

His role in The Lighthouse was monumental. I'm not even that fond of the film. But Willem's acting is beyond a towering performance.
@@gregorysgarrison That's exactly how I feel.
Tall tales…. More tall tales
HAAAAAARK!
The Devil's Backbone is a movie I watched with my mom when I was younger and I never hear anyone talk about it! Its so good!
Willem Dafoe is a certified legend of cinema (Platoon, Spiderman, The Lighthouse). Congratulations Willem on your HWOF star, you're a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ actor!
Don't forget Boondocks saints. Really iconic and funny role(though some people nowdays may find it "problematic).
@@Vadim_Slastihin I can't lie I've not seen it but I'll add it to my list.
you gotta see him in the new movie "poor things" great performance and amazing movie
his best movie is The Lighthouse.
@@Vadim_Slastihin THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!!!
His reaction seeing First Temptation of Christ was great
“The First Temptation of Christ,” a/k/a “Mary’s Boob”
Last.
Knitpicking, but true. I remember the protests when that film saw the light of day....😂.
@@artisans8521 "Nitpicking."
Was that a prequel? 🤔
Criterion is killing it with these big stars in closet videos since the new year. 🎉
One of my favorites is his character in Boondock Saints. I think it was the first movie I saw him in when I was a kid, and he really nailed it.
I know him from poor thing
As a Gen Z guy who knew him first from Spider-Man, I agree entirely. The guy has had so many roles in both blockbuster and arthouse films. His Goblin is iconic, but he has been in so many classics over the years and he's carried every poor film he's starred in.
He is amazing in New Rose Hotel (a William Gibson short story, so it's cyberpunk but on the corporate side of the genre). It's basically just him and Christopher Walken doing crazy dialogs with Gibson Corp jargon, with some Asia Argento thrown in there for a bit.
I worked with you in The Clearing. I have always loved your work and found your part in Asteroid City to be remarkable. Thank you for all of it.
These videos being me back the good old dvd days man. There’s something about physically picking out movies and reading the back. Streaming is too easy. You feel more connected to the movie when you drive somewhere and get it or consume it via video store or the movie theater. Thank you for this, truly.
Loved him in Oliver Stone’s ‘Platoon’.
Of course, one of the best episodes yet 🤩
PS.
Thanx.
One of the few keeping true cinema alive in this era.
He exudes pure charisma, amazing guy.
Willem is a gift to humanity
Willem needs a shopping cart just for his movies alone. A master actor!
I just discovered this little gem of a channel, and I'm already totally addicted. You can tell so much about any actor or filmmaker by their choice of favorite films. The sheer joy on Dafoe's face made me want to watch ALL of his picks.
Willem Dafoe is my imaginary dad. Whenever I'm feeling down I look in the mirror and there he is to give me encouragement. Granted, he only encourages me to "KILL SPIDER-MAN!" but it's more than my step-dad ever did for me, that's for sure.
🤣😂😆🤣😂
Avenge me
@@zachsutton6195 Oh, yeah. I get that one a lot, too. So many broken mirrors in my house.
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I SACRIFICED?!
Wow not seen any of these
Dafoe is a treasure. Nice selection of films, too. Loved his reaction when plucking Last Temptation of Christ from the shelf.
So cool to hear him talk about The Life Aquatic - it's one of my favourites from Wes!
I could've watched an hour-long version of this. His joy is contagious.
I can listen to him talking for tons of hours for some reason I love him.
I’d pay a lot of money to see his Onibaba remake 😮
This is my favourite Closest pick episode ever so far Willem Dafoe is always compelling to watch and for someone as legendary as he is seems devoid of any ego you just know that some of those films in that closet he is featuring in them lol his energy his humour is a delight his reaction to seeing The Last Temptation of Christ 3:10 "woah ladies and gentlemen you know this man, he's a little bit more than a man or is he" that cheeky humour was just priceless what a gem......
A-list royalty in the closet. Hopefully Light Sleeper gets a Criterion 4k in the not too distant future. A masterpiece, cult film, underappreciated in its era. Perfect for a Criterion release.
This movie is absolutely gorgeous. However Le Samourai is also not bad. Both deal with solitude in some way.
I'd love Criterions of Light Sleeper and Affliction, both Paul Schrader and Dafoe pairings, though Dafoe's role is smaller in Affliction. Excellent films, though.
"I'm dripping"
What is "Criterion" mean? Have heard of it so many times...
@@neighborhoodmusicsnob5517 Hot Dana Delaney.
I adore Willem Defoe. One of the few great actors with an appearance you can not forget.
Life Aquatic is one of my favorite films!
I had to drop everything I was doing to watch this! Love Willem DaFoe!
The way this man makes me smile ;-; such a genuine soul.
This was maybe the most adorable video of the series
I've always liked and respected Willem Dafoe. But I never knew that he was such a charming fellow full of simple-hearted sunny candid enthusiasm. A wonderful man indeed.
as a Wisconsinite, im so glad Willem is one of us!
This is will be definitely one of the best episodes 👍🏻 let’s enjoy 😉
Love him so much in The Florida Project.
Good movie ! The director Sean Baker has a criterion closet episode as well.
nice to see Ashes and Diamonds, burning shotglasses scene and Cybulski role were huge
Hvala striček Dafoe. Mi Stolični uzrokovatelji smo jako sretni što ste nam pomogli u odabiru filmova za naše filmske večeri. Vi ste naše svjetlo na kraju tunela. Amen 🙏
I love his joyful enthusiasm for movies!!!
Willem Dafoe always feels like the most intelligent, charming, talented guy who's probably also got a closet full of dark, dark secrets that I've ever seen. Hanging with him must be a real trip.
look at the ammount of movies he has. dude has no time for dark secrets :D
I took acid with him back in 1997 Dublin party, the guy told us he has a love for the Anti-Christ
Never meet your heroes
theres a video of him dancing buck naked for some art thing and its a nightmare
Willam DaFoe is a treasure. More people should try to be like him. 🌞
If he ever did a return visit, no one could complain!! ICON!!
Willem Dafoe's scope and taste in the movies he's chosen is eclectic and impeccable. His enthusiasm is charming and contagious. He should program a film festival of his own choosing. Unquestionably one, if not the finest, actor of his generation for the daring variety and flawless performances in the roles he's done. As far as I can tell he's never given a bad or even mediocre performance. Ever!
Just found this channel a few hours ago and man, what i've been missing...
This is the kind of content that is very hard to get these days: 100% real.
I have always wanted to hear some of my favourite artists speak about the movies they love as if we were in the same room and about to watch those movies together.
Brilliant!
0:55 woah woah woah there you let the goblin out for a second, please be careful
I want to hang out with this guy!!! Just amazing skills and great sense of humor. Anybody who does a Burt Lancaster Indian wrestler impression needs an Academy Award 😂❤️
Awesome person, great actor. This was a real treat to watch.
One of the greatest actors ever. I got to meet in a few times over the years on NYC streets. He was always nice and polite. A true gentleman. 👍
i just love the little bits he has in the middle with the anecdotes, you really see how much love he has for film in each one. its obvious how great his performances are, hes a fan of the art!
I loved the part at the end where he said “Godspeed Criterion closet!” And pumpkin bombed the entire collection, such a great way to end the series.
(But seriously though Defoe had good picks and it was nice to see him excited picking through the collection(.
Just ordered the criterion for Onibaba last night :) Brought a smile to my face to see it not only be Dafoe's first pick but a film he wants to remake himself
Onibaba straight off the bat
He's coming in hot!!!
For real... Great film!
I agree "life aquatic" is an actual masterpiece that everyone needs to see!
I’m making it a point to watch after this. I totally missed these when they were made and released.
Recently rewatched The Life Aquatic. Forgot how good it is!
