I was 16 in ‘66 when this hit the charts. This was the California vibe all the way in spades. Mama Cass had perfect pitch and what an amazing voice. She was the backbone. The wrecking Crew played all the background instruments… Carol Kane was the bass. Epic song of an era gone by. Yes this was an out growth of the Coffee House scene and evolution of the folk music vibe.

Despite all this they burned brightly and made a lot of great music in a short time.

That Monterrey Music Festival is iconic. The Who flipped a coin to decide who would go on last. Pete Townshend said there was no way they were going on after Hendrix. The Who was technically the headliner that night but chose to go on before Hendrix. That is the infamous scene of Hendrix lighting his guitar in fire on stage. Mama Cass said to Pete that Hendrix was stealing their show. Pete said no, he is doing our show.
This came out the same year as the Beach Boys' "California Girls". Apparently Brian Wilson was inspired by LSD. Who knows if it was different with them?
