Me too but I can't even listen without crying so avoid it. So poignant that art can affect you so much you can't even look, listen. There a few things for me like that. Dogs death by John Updike. Poem. It's devastating.

The term “losing my religion” is apparently a southern slang phrase for losing your temper.
You should definitely check out Natalie Merchant.. especially her song “Carnival”. She also had this sort of 90s alt rock vibe.

1991 in Athens. They played a “surprise” set at a mental health benefit at 40 Watt. Afterwards we are leaving outside and Bill Berry is walking out too and tells us “Y’all be careful”. Drummer for one of the biggest bands in the world at the time just a humble regular guy. Will never forget it. That is R.E.M. and why they were so special.

If you really want to get hit in the feels, watch "Everybody Hurts." Also "The One I Love" is a beautifully bittersweet song. Meanwhile "Losing My religion" isn't my favorite REM song, but still a very good one.

REM is from the old school alternative scene called " college radio " where other acts like Depeche Mode, U2, INXS, The Police & The Cure came from. Their music was cutting edge and mainstream Pop & Rock radio wouldn't play them until they finally broke through and blew up

Isnt it interesting: the background music of our youth is so much better than the so called top 20 songs today? I mean, this is genius....by the way: the singer Michael Stipe isnt chasing a girl down with his lyrics, he is openly gay. A lot of artistic queer images in this video , too..

When this song was out I took a road trip with some friends during college. Exploring different local radio stations along the way. Every 20 minutes we heard "Losing My Religion" and "Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure. I heard those songs so many times that summer. Thirty years later, I'm almost to the point where I can listen to that song again and enjoy it.

They came out of a really fertile post-punk proto-alternative scene around the University of Georgia in Athens in the early 80's, and were the biggest band of that scene (after The B-52's). Along with Hüsker Dü and The Replacements, they formed the Holy Trinity of the early 80's American underground. It was sometimes called "college rock" and around here (Texas) we called it "new music". Their debut album, "Murmur" (1983) was named Album of the Year over bigger ones by artists like The Police and Michael Jackson, something of a critical coup. Between 1986-87, they started gaining a much higher mainstream profile, and this was about the time record labels and music press were starting to call this "alternative rock". Their success was responsible for a slew of unknown, unsigned bands working in this vein to get record deals, some of whom went on to bigger things, some of whom didn't. They signed their first major label deal and released their first album on a major label in 1988, "Green". Their deal was with Warner Bros. for somewhere between 6-12 million dollars, and complete creative and artistic control. Basically, Warner Bros. had to accept and release whatever they decided to record. "Losing My Religion" was released in 1991, and that single and the album it was on, "Out of Time", were their biggest commercial successes yet. They won three Grammys that year. And this was the first time the band did not go out on tour following an album release. Their following album "Automatic for the People" (1992) would be the biggest album of their career. The original drummer, Bill Berry, left the band and retired from an active music career in 1997, following some health scares in the previous year. The band continued to work as a three piece, with other drummers, though none of those were ever "official" members. They broke up in 2011.

This is a difficult song and video. Not about a stalker. More about having a sexual obsession over someone, but afraid saying anything and 'spilling the milk'. The singer is on a pedestal, but when he falls off he loses his wings, he can never get that prestige back once lost. He 'loses his religion', he loses his faith (in himself). I think it is about having feelings for ANOTHER GUY. If the guy is straight, when he comes on to him, what happens to their friendship. It is scary. Is it worth saying too much or not enough? Once the milk is spilt, once the wings come off, you can't go back.

One unusual feature of this song is that, unlike practically every other pop song since the inception of pop songs, these lyrics don't rhyme at all.
