The best part of his playing on this song was cut short at the end. At any rate, Mark is one of the greatest guitarists and lyricists in any genre. His solo stuff is very good, and he is still going strong.
Yes, great performance that cuts off the final solo which was part of what made Mark Knopfler a legend. Do yourselves a favor and hunt the studio version down
The Alchemy Live version is the pinnacle. Some other great songs from them include Telegraph Road, Private Investigations, Romeo and Juliet, and Brothers In Arms
Yes, it's disappointing when the Alchemy Live isn't the one. I hope you 3 gentlemen will check that out real soon. If you love the guitar in this one you're going to lose your minds when you see the Alchemy Live..
@@Nirvaa9311Not to anyone that knows anything about rock guitarists. I've seen interviews of Clapton and other contemporaries who rate him amongst the best of all time. Bob Dylan used Mark Knopfler on a couple of his albums and rated him as the best guitarist he's had since the days of The Band.
"They don't give a damn about no trumpet-playin' band, that's not what they call rock'n'roll..." This song is the definition of smooth. We'd never heard anything like it when it was released.
You should check out "Walk of Life". Once you hear the opening, you'll realize you've known of Dire Straits without knowing Dire Straits if you ever watched a baseball game.
Dire Straits are amazing. Please do the official video for Brothers In Arms. You probably heard the song before but it is so moving and the guitar is haunting.
Guitar music just flows effortlessly out of Mark Knopfler like cool water. He once said he'd be practicing, fall asleep, and when he woke up he was still playing.
Mark Knopfler is considered one of the best guitarists. He’s very jazz influenced and he makes me think of Django Reinhardt ! ( legendary jazz guitarist) Money For Nothing was their #1 hit. The official video itself was groundbreaking! Check it out guys- it slaps!!!!!❤😊
You're not wrong about England being the source of a lot of the best blues-inflected rock in the 60s and 70s. Most of my favorite musical acts at the time were from the UK.
Every Dire Straits song is a duet between Mark Knopfler and his guitar at it's heart. His solo work is probably even better since that band has been together since 1996. Dire Straits only had two permanent members Mark Knopfler and John Illsley, the bass player.
It was all these UK guys who grew up in the 50's and 60's who got into old American Blues albums and were influenced by it so much they incorporated it into the songs they wrote. Then they ended up bringing it back to the US and revived all the old bluesmen and women. I know Elvis played a big part in it in America but it was people like Clapton and the Stones that really struck a chord in American listeners ears. Out of them Mark Knopfler here was the best fingerpicker to come out of it all.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s can't believe anyone alive never heard of dire straits but to each his own and now we can enjoy all cultures music and it seems to be the one thing that unites everyone.
Mark Knopfler is like Mick Jagger. Neither of them can really SING, but their voices somehow just WORK. As much as I love great singers, I wouldn't change these guys for anything. 😊✌️
Another great northeast england talent. Lead singer is whats known as a geordie. From newcastle upon tyne. Lots and lots of musical talent from the northeast of england.
Yes, whoever put that video together faded out the best part of it! You guys should listen to the studio version, or another live version because the ending guitar work is incredible!
@@normandavidtidiman9918No it isn't the single version. Everything that has been played on radio and released as a single always included the second guitar solo.
Great reaction. I wish people didn’t react to this video, because you’re missing a whole verse, and the best solo. An important verse, and solo, in my opinion.
This came out I believe in 78 or 79 and I didn't realize the lead singer was the main guitar player but it went off when it was about to be even better
Guys, seriously, like many others have already said, if you watch and react to the band's live version as part of their 'Alchemy' tour (the still photo which appears in the bottom right hand corner of this very video...) I absolutely guarantee you'll all be blown away by Mark's amazing guitar skills, and the bands fantastic musicianship, all of them. 🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂
A strait is a channel connecting two larger bodies of water, like the Strait of Gibraltar between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. "In dire straits" is another way of saying "in dangerous waters", and has come to mean, "in a difficult situation".
Nice reaction . Shame you didnt get the full version with the famous solo at the end. Maybe react to the Alchemy Live version sometime. It's an epic version..!
This video was cut in the middle, just when guitar solo was about to start. Hard to understand why someone would do that, considering that Mark Knopfler is top 5 guitarists of all time.
There was a whole verse missing from this version , ...." there's a group of kids standing in the corner with there baggies on , its not what they call Rock and roll, but the sultans play creole, , " This group is also the first band to have the first video on MTV, money for nothing,
There are times I like to listen to this version (without the guitar solo at the end being cut off; the original song is much longer than what's shown in the video) and there are times I like to listen to the Alchemy version of this song. It's the same song, but the vibes are different. You guys should check out the Alchemy Live version and compare the differences. Another song by Dire Straits I highly recommend is Tunnel of Love, the live version from Wembley, but the live version from Alchemy is also good. In this song, the vibes are different as well from the studio version and the live version.

Telegraph Road
I would love to see you react to the Live at Alchemy version of Sultans of Swing. One of THE best live performances ever.
Mark Knopfler narrates. His guitar sings for him
One song, Brothers In Arms!
Mark Knopfler is a phenomenal guitarist.
Dire straits are the best!!..Mark Knopfler for me the best guitarist in the world..still listen to them..❤❤
Mark Knopfler, schooling people to this day on hand picking a guitar
Mark Knopflers first job was writing copy for a London newspaper. His first assignment was writing the obituary for Jimi Hendrix ..
Mark Knoppler is a guitar genius one of the greatest who ever lived
Life is. Learning. I first heard this song in 1980. During my assignment in the military overseas and at the time no idea Who performed the song
The Legendary Mark Knopfler!!
Prince was once asked what it’s like to be the greatest guitar player in history. His response “I don’t know, you’d have to ask Mark Knopfler”
One of the Many bands from the UK who made great music inspired by black American jazz and blues
A pox on the house of whoever cut out the final bars - some of the most iconic soloing ever.
A masterpiece! Am a fan since the begining.
This is a song everyone seems to like
The best part of his playing on this song was cut short at the end. At any rate, Mark is one of the greatest guitarists and lyricists in any genre. His solo stuff is very good, and he is still going strong.
It was definitely cut off before they brought it home!!! 👍🏿
It's missing a verse too. Too bad -- this is one of those songs where the album version beats all the others.
Yes, great performance that cuts off the final solo which was part of what made Mark Knopfler a legend. Do yourselves a favor and hunt the studio version down
You should hear the "real" version with another verse as well.
I know that bummed me out that's the coolest outro, bummer I wanted these guys to hear him let loose!!!
You missed the best part of the song! The epic guitar solo near the end. Please listen to/watch a video of the FULL song.
I agree. Missing Knopfler's killer solo at the end is like stopping "In The Air Tonight" before Phil Collins's epic drum solo.
That IS the "full" 7" single version, you want the live extended version
Yes! I almost yelled at the screen “nooooo!” You gotta listen to the end!!!
@@StellaJean1000 That’s how the single version ends, and that video. There is no extended solo.
@@normandavidtidiman9918No it isn't the full single version. The end has been cut off.
I know you don't want to repeat, but ALCHEMY LIVE version!! You'll be sooo happy you did.
IT WAS CALLED the British Invasion. Good music 60s on!

Skate Away is also a classic.
Mark Knopfler doesn't use a pick, only his fingers. That's what makes his sound so unique.
Indeed because 5 picks are better than one.. 😀
Underrated??? 🤣🤣🤣

Brothers in Arms is a beautiful listen
"Brothers in arms " and romeo and Juliet are my favorites but love all their music
Mark Knopfler has such a unique sound that is easily recognizable, the mark of a true artist.
Brings back the best of the MTV days, when it was good.
Mark is one of the goats of guitar
Yes, he is!!!
Dire Straits' 'Brothers in Arms' will get you thinking.
Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live will blow you away. Guitars, drums, keyboards all 100% fantastic.
Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time
Underated? By whom? I want names.
Knopfler. KING
I look forward to seeing you look at brothers in arms.
Deptford, South London. back then a pretty grim place. In those days pubs would have live music, a wide spectrum of style and level of competence.
Just tickles me to death to see new generations fall in love with the music I grew up on. Nice one. Glad you enjoyed this one. It's a classic.
"They don't give a damn about no trumpet-playin' band, that's not what they call rock'n'roll..." This song is the definition of smooth. We'd never heard anything like it when it was released.
And the Sultans, yeah the Sultans play Creole.
He has to be in the top twenty of all time
Mark knoffler is one of the most underrated guitarist. Truely great!
underrated guitarist 😳 well im 41 and in my youth we joke about him as we always hear he was the best
Maybe within the general public. In guitarist world, he's up there with the likes of Clapton.
Underrated by you. Stop that nonsense

Underrated…? I think he’s pretty widely considered one of the best guitarists of all time to people who know music.

I've always loved the drumming in this song. So tasty.
Dire Straits "Walk of Life" "Brothers in Arms" "So Far Away" and of course "Money for Nothing" all are great. You will like each of these as much.
Excellent recommendations.
So Far Away is my favorite of these .. all good though for sure
great suggestions but don't leaves out Roller Girl....lol
