Best way to avoid this in E46,
    1. Change oil cooler in 40,000kms (heard its kind of a design fault)
    2. Go for a brushless and bigger fan if possible.
    3. Replace the head and butt of radiator if you are still using OEM.
    4. If you want to go for, there is a separate oil pump cooler by GReady and it works marvels.
    5. Check your coolant everyday before you start up 😂

Might be able to tell by my profile picture, but my first car was a N52 X5 and I had almost all of my radiator hoses, reservoir and radiator fail due to a auxiliary fan failing, I fix the whole radiator system did the CCV and Val cover gasket but never realized auxiliary fan, failed. and so I Drove it for about a year through the winter ran fine, but when summer came around, radiator hoses and parts started leaking one after another. And soon after I realized the fan was not working. So I replaced it with a new one but the new one was still not working so I did some research and found the problem was a engine, coolant, temperature sensor, and a fan switch sensor. Moral of the story. Don’t just fix the issue fix what’s causing the issue.

Bit late to the video I guess but I solved my coolant issues and it was the following. My car was smoking so I decided to check the EGR and the intake manifold. After I took them off there I saw it. The coolant hose that enters the engine block was corroded. Not the hose in particular but a plastic piece to which the main and that auxiliary coolant hose connect. The corrosion was pink which meant the owner before me was using the red antifreeze and not the green/blue one which indeed corrodes various parts in BMW engines.

I think I figured out your problem it is because you’re using water instead of antifreeze water will evaporate under high heat antifreeze doesn’t quite do that. That’s why you keep overheating put antifreeze in there not just water.

I blew my head gasket and will never mess around with overheating issues again. I suspected something from the time I bought it and the coolant sensor was malfunctioning and then the temperature needle started going wacky and eventually it legit started overheating bad whenever I parked the car outside in the rain or got water on the hood somehow

G.A.S German Auto Solutions has an aftermarket cap that really helps with the strain on the E46 cooling system.
Its a 1.2 bar Cooling System Cap that uses 100% original BMW internal components that have been recalibrated to vent at 1.2 bar vs. the factory 2.0 bar cap setting. Newer cars cooling systems are now calibrated at 1.0 - 1.2 bar to reduce stress on plastic components, increasing the lifespan of the fragile plastic parts without affecting the performance of the cooling system.
    Always use blue coolant.

The expansion tank will always look empty if it’s not completely cooled down (as in letting it sit overnight) i checked mine after it sat for over an hour and it looked empty so i went to buy some an hour later. when i got back it was at the correct level

  • @juanburgos6937

...And that's where your issue is beemer brother,. Water evaporates and disappears out of your coolant system, perfectly good coolant does not. By the way keep engine on while adding cold water to hot engine. 😉 Water warps the cylinder heads on these beamers and loosens the head bolts. It creates too much steam pressure, ,might as well buy a Stanley Steamer , steam engine,. Even they Warped back in the day.

I have a e46 pre facelift 'Vert. 154k miles on the clock and I can honestly say that she runs like a dream. I recently put her first ever replacement clutch in since she rolled out the factory (I'm the 3rd owner, the previous 2 owners were, let's say, rather wealthy older people)
In my 3 years of ownership I've topped the coolant up once. Top the oil up a quick 2 squeeze once month.
It's just fuel she likes to drink 😂 325ci.. on a good day I'll get around 17mpg... If I hammer it I'll get her down to 7... My mate has a V8 with better fuel consumption 😅

Should be titled "what kind of people own bmw's" Cheap mf's that dont fix their cars. Every car will do this at 15-20 years old. My mustang had a slow leak, i went in with a mishimoto kit for like 200$, never had a leak again. Because what happens is those issues will stack up, the car will start to be a PITA, and then you wanna get rid of it, Then who ever gets it is inheriting your problems.

Please fix that coolant leak. 223000 is not much for a M54 engine but if that engine gets overheated, the aluminum block will expand and loosen the cylinder head bolts, resulting in cylinder head gasket leakage.
Dont save money on that engine.
