I loved how they mixed Coreys breathing sounds throughout songs on this entire album. It really adds to the aggression and madness for something as subtle as that. They don't do it really anymore on any of their following records.
Yeah , I’d say it’s in Iowa just as much and a bit in vol.3 but I agree too bad. Corey’s kinda got more technique now instead of really going at it, which is probably good lol

They do man just not as common coz most of the guys are in a better place. They aren't fake, but you still hear Corey moaning at the end of lines occasionally. Totally agree though, it gives me goosebumps, my favourite album, probably because of the insanity

These vocal breakdowns are fantastic. I know little about the vocal recording process, so it's teaching me quite a bit.

He wasn't using false cord at all when screaming lmao, he was straight up yelling and adding distortion from his throat. He blew his voice out many times on the first album tour and was only allowed to speak for 30 minutes a day, which was during shows. Pretty nuts how his throat is still around tbh
i think he kinda knew how to scream properly but he pushed himself too far for too long. after watching tons of live videos, it seems his voice didn’t really start to noticeably deteriorate until after the iowa tour. it’s around then that he kinda stopped jumping around while screaming like he used to; that’s really hard to sustain without running out of breath and fucking your throat up. during vol3 i think he wanted to try something different vocally but chose something that was damaging.
now here he is in his prime again.
He was using a bad false chord technique which is why he almsot lost his voice and why his voice change competely after IOWA
You cant just "scream" for an entire album cycle especially considering how many shows they did without losing your voice.
That's what I heard... He was referred to Melissa Cross somewhere along the way to make it more proper and preserve his voice and still kick ass

Everyone says this. It’s not true. He was using false cord (or at least some sort of technique) but not very well, which would explain why during self titled he basically whispered during interviews. Then, during Iowa he really refined his scream and he sounded much better (more consistent and powerful). You can’t just do shows night after night and sound as good as him without technique.
Whoever disliked this needs to rethink their life

Yeah I don’t get it what is the point? If you don’t like good vocal Analysis then why are you watching it? What don’t you like about this? Cause it really can’t get better imo. And it has professional production on top of that and even shows how the technique is done. What more could you ask for?

THE song that changed my life. Until this song, it was all screaming (Slayer) or regular rasp (Metallica) for me, but it was the first song that had melodic parts mixed with hellish screaming. Still love this song to this day! Awesome, fantastic vid!
The thing that strikes me whenever I hear this song, but especially now that you're isolating the vocals here, is how young he sounds in this song.
When this album came out, when I was in highschool, I think that was one of the draws. I know now this was an urban legend, but at the time the rumor was Corey was 17 when this song was recorded. He wasn't but you could be fooled into thinking he was by how young he sounded at the time (you never really saw their faces at the time so you couldn't really judge by that although he's fairly short in comparison to the others in the band so arguably that could add to the myth as well).

I’ve never been a huge Slipknot fan, but Corey’s screams are something else. Great job breaking those down.
A couple of other good examples of the vocal break + low tonal base are Jeffrey Moreira from Poison the Well, Luc Lemay from Gorguts and Aaron Turner from ISIS (the band).
That vocalist from POISON THE WELL is sick indeed.

I honestly highly recommend don’t try screaming like Corey Taylor. It can really mess up your voice. I used to scream like him, and it sucked! I screwed up my voice and couldn’t even learn how to scream properly for 3 years
so that's why his neck is so huge. got it.

Learnt the hard way as well. Although I can sing along to his Iowa stuff quite easily after 1 song my voice feels fried so I don’t do anymore. Even Corey messed his voice up from the Iowa tour because he was just screaming with no technique. It was just drunken screaming
Not only are the tracks "panned into the center a bit", they are in fact *just mono* !
After I listened to them, that is what is most impressive production-wise, how they made it sound so impressively huge while it's just going straight up and down in the spectrum meter.
SO cool... thanks for adding this. At one point, I did "mono" my mix of these and I felt like I heard a little difference... as in the originals are NOT QUITE true mono, but you might be right!

Not gonna lie, vocal isolation sounds weird. Kinda like the way you use it for breakdowns. Good for teaching.
Isolated vocal analysis is always fun. So much comes out of these. I like Corey's relaxed clean approach along with the blending of the screams. Very cool video!

I love these breakdowns, especially of heavier songs. It really helps to dissuade the "well I'll never be able to sound like that" mindset. And definitely saves some people's voices lol.

Unfortunately - this sounds nothing like him, and not because we all have "different screams" but because he's using a different voice distortion(scream technique).

I am super surprised now, what a great point about the 'pitch' in his screams. I always thought he sounded different since All Hope is Gone and couldn't really place my finger on why, I thought it might have been the damage on his vocals cords but Corey himself never said he hurt his voice (I mean, yeah he mentioned instances where he couldn't sing but this happened to every singer I know). Listening to this without background music you can actually hear the same basis for the screams he does now, just without the 'pitch'. You can especially hear it when he screams "free" at 10:10.
Maybe it is a result of a different production approach and being less off the hook since he is older now as well, hard to tell. With that being said, as you yourself would put it - Cool stuff! Love it, maybe could do something from Iowa too? :P
It sounds like less primary cord engagement, which he might do for safety reasons. I definitely feel like We Are Not Your Kind is a sweet spot between the early stuff where he really wasn't concerned with his technique as much (even though Chris is showing us how to go about this in a safe way, Corey was not safe and if I recall ended up blowing his voice after Vol. 3; see: Corey Taylor Explains Why His Scream Changed) to a more experienced and more mindful/safe Corey Taylor that can still kill both.
Whenever im warming up to do some false chord rawrs, when i first start pushing through my break and im in the phase where you use very short phrases to ease in, I ALWAYS do the line "i-have-sinned-by-just" a few times. It really helps stay relaxed in that coordination AND stay engaged with support. When i know im ready i finish the "by making my mind up and taking your breath away" and i know im ready to rock

Anyone else feel like Cory's clean and distorted yell doubles have this effect of conveying internal voices? It's such a go to production move but has this incredible effect of really conveying descent into madness. I really dig it!

I know you’re the expert, but I’m gonna go against the grain here haha. I do believe he was doing a full on false cord “growl,” as you put it, but using more of his real voice, making it sound a little like pitched screams (probably cuz he wasn’t very experienced and didn’t understand the concept of keeping the vocal cords open when doing false cord). I think what you were doing, and you probably know this, is what Corey was doing on Vol. 3, which sounds way different than the first two albums. I guess my last point would be that the technique you were doing and Corey was doing on Vol. 3 is extremely difficult compared to false cord and I have a hard time believing he’d be able to do that right off the bat. Anyway, we’ll never know for sure what he was doing, but it’s fun to theorize about it lol
Edit: You should analyze a Spiritbox song if you haven’t already. I think your screams would fit perfectly. Very similar technique I think.

There is an alternate mix of Wait and Bleed that doesn't feature the yell vocal tracks (or at least not as much of them) - might have been on a movie soundtrack or something like that. It completely deflates the song.

Corey in the first 2 projects from slipknot never used false chord engagement. He quite literally just screamed with distortion. Not healthy at all and that’s why Vol. 3 he sounded so weak and airy

Great Chris. I don't listen to 'Slipknot' due to the shouting but everyone knows this song and it is great. Corey Taylor is a brilliant singer and his best songs to me are when he sings with his natural voice. I don't know how I came across the song 'Snuff', I had the album but I dont know why. It was a shock and it stood out due to the contrast to their usual music. I wished more of their songs were like that. I never knew what he sounded like before that song and now it is one of my favourites of all time. I have come across Stone Sour which is more songs in the tone that I prefer. Very diverse and a great artist.
Vermillion pt. 2 is quite similar. Both great songs!

I second this one. Peter is freaking awesome. He can do these really high Whistletone fry screams also. He works into them too he starts mid and ascends up into the highs. Not like COF where he’s usually already at the pitch. I think I’d choose a different song though. Cancer of the soul displays a bit more.
Listen to the Wait and Bleed (Terry Date mix) it puts the clean backgrounds over the top scream mix.

I only know of a few really aggressive songs, but this is one of them. My best friend made me a CD including this and a NIN song to blast out when I was an angry. I'd sing along like I was in chamber choir 😂. Wish I could pull this off, this video has helped a bit. Really enjoying this series with production tips.

I don't think he thinks too much about it. He's yelling (primary cords) and has figured out the coordination to involve his upper throat (false cords) but he's really stumbled on it. But lots of people don't stumble in things correctly and mess things up too! haha
I always hear these self entitled vocal coaches say that it’s impossible to sound like another singer and it’s so fascinating to see how you sound exactly like him with the right technique

The screaming vocal section has some harmonizer and some autotune layers on it… It’s very effective at anchoring a sort of melodic line, which helps drive the song.
