      Thank you for being so informative. Very, very helpful. On the mylar emergency blankets, have you ever had them go bad? Stick together, not open? I'm questioning leaving them in the vehicle if it's in one that sets outside in Florida sun too long. I guess it's a general question about everything. If i have a bag put together and leave it in the vehicle, should it last if left there or is there a duration to be mindful of. Hope to hear from you and thank you.

    Fire Starter: Soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly. Store them in a pill bottle. They are messy to handle so dig them out of the bottle with your knife. They burn about 10 minutes and make great fire starters. One match fires every time!

      Or another variation on that idea I've used is to fill cardboard egg cartons with dryer lint and pour the leftover candle wax (that didn't burn as fast as the wicks did) into each cup then cut em into singles once they're dry. Saved me my first summer in Alaska.

    I live in a small apartment but I’ve been a tent camper all my life so I’m glad that I have all the gear, including sleeping bags, tents, propane stove, tarps, paracord, water jugs, fire starters, axes, solar lanterns, hand crank radio with am/fm and NOAA, etc. I am seriously adding to my preps currently and I have been stocking up on food, water, extra propane, life straws, emergency food bars, etc. The world is heading into such living nightmares right now that anyone who doesn’t prep at least a little is going to regret it. I now need a map of my state and to have conversation with family who own remote land and homes for bug out situations. I also will be buying seeds! I have medical assistant education and I’m currently reading a couple books on emergency medical care and shtf situational preparedness. It’s past time to be ready!

    One thing you can't buy that is worth more than anything on your list is experience. Go camping. Get out in the woods. Do it every chance you get.
    Practice survival and problem solving skills when times are good so that it won't be the first time you have to do it when times are hard.
    It could save your life.

    • @pouglwaw5932

      Yes, true ! Also, when you take your survival kit out camping [ even in the backyard], you'll soon discover what is missing that you really need. Just keep adding little things till you know you can be comfortable, fed, and "watered" all day, and all night, too.

    For fire starter, save some old used up candles or get them from friends. Buy a 2 dollar roll of jute twine. Dip the entire roll of jute twine into the hot candle wax until it is completely saturated. You now have enough wet light tinder for the rest of your life. TH-cam has many how to vids on making and using it. I carry 9 or 10, 3 to 4 inches lengths of it in my wallet and the rest of the roll in my BOB and I have a roll at home that I use to make trash fires, and campfires to keep in practice................ You're welcome.

    Sisal twine dipped in candle wax makes an excellent fire starter and catches the sparks from ferro rods well. Just fluff up the end first. I saw a hollow medal tube with waxed twine you feed through that burns like a big candle, long enough to start small twigs, etc on fire on Amazon. It was $15, so I made one from a trimmed down metal straw from Walmart and bought a cheap ball of twine, soaked a few long strands in melted candle wax, and fed through the tube. I also wrap waxed twine around all my ferro rods over foil peppermint patty wrappers, or foil cookie/gum wrappers. Put piece of fluffed wax twine on a bit of foil wrapper, and they both really ignite quickly.

    Practice your survival techniques ( set up a tent, start a fire, cook water/meal, make fire starters, etc.) when you have a day off (or with your kids or family) so you know how if you have an emergency, and people are panicking.

    Prepping can get expensive but the essentials aren’t expensive at all. The most expensive things that I see on preppers lists are firearms (obviously) and solar generators.

    • @cdevidal
      @cdevidal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And solar generators don’t have to be expensive. They’re just a fancy box that contains a charger, inverter, and battery. You can DIY one for not much money.

    • @JohnSmith-gz5pm
      @JohnSmith-gz5pm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cdevidal TIME IS MONEY! The more time it takes to build something, the more money you lose with time that could have been used to make more money! Most people don’t have the time it takes to build every little thing that they want to buy. You’re paying for the years of experience it took for professionals to create these products. Its easier to buy them professionally made, ready and complete by trusted brands (ex: Ecoflow, Bluetti, etc.) on sale or on Kickstarter for a fraction of the price.

    • @JohnSmith-gz5pm
      @JohnSmith-gz5pm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cdevidal You can get solar generator deals for less than a DIY. Hobotech features deals on his YT channel all the time! He features them from trusted brands that are cheaper than DIY (ex: Bluetti was selling a 5,100 watt LIFE PO4 solar generator early bird speacial for $1,800 on Kickstarter complete with hundreds of dollars worth of free accessories! You can’t beat that! That’s far better than trying to figure out every little process for everything thing that you want to buy just because you want to save some money. This all leads to time and money wasted.

    • @cdevidal
      @cdevidal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JohnSmith-gz5pmAgree with you on time spent learning, unless like me you already know how to do it then DIY is less expensive and not much more time. 5,100 watts = five deep cycle batteries $90 each, or I am currently building up a lithium battery, add a $50 solar charger and $50 inverter, drop in a box and tada! Solar generator. Would take me about four hours to make one, if it costs $700 total and I save $1100 that's working for $275 an hour. Time is money.

    • @JohnSmith-gz5pm
      @JohnSmith-gz5pm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cdevidal Your paying for experienced professionals to create a finished product complete with an extended warranty. You can not realistically expect everyone to DIY everything when most people don’t know how to build it and don’t have the time needed in order to gain the knowledge and experience required to DIY everything. Add in a wife, kids, 12 to 16+ hour workdays everyday. Do you really think what little free time people have, they’re going to be spending it all on trying to figure out building a solar generator???! NO!!!! People live busy lives. There’s barely enough time for yourself, let alone trying to gain the knowledge, skills and experience needed to figure out DIY’s which can take weeks, months or years of FREE TIME to gain. Its not worth it for most. Most people are better off buying a finished product from a trusted brand rather than trying to DIY everything.

    Couple hacks using a phone that I've used (whether they were truly helpful or not, they helped me to enter and entertain a necessary state of denial regarding my ability to deal with any threats) First, I downloaded all different kinds of horns, sirens, alarms, whistles, explosions, trains braking, Dubstep! etc. Also bobcats, cougars, goats! (elephants & peacocks too, idk) I'd keep my trigger finger ready to unpause the mp3 player shortcut queued up to the appropriate intimidating clip vs my best guess of possible attackers. Even had some owls to chase away snakes?
    Second gem of a tip which I would not hesitate to use just to avoid becoming enraged from frustration, if your battery IS dead and your forced to survive, stab the battery with a metal point - stake, tool, fork, knife, antenna from POS hand crank emergency radio?, whatever. It will burn like propane torch for awhile. Get your firewood and water pot ready before you stab it so you can make the most of it. I just bring extra useless batteries I have from other phones tho, they're small and don't weigh anything so it's worth it for my state of mind.
    Oh, and on Naked & Afraid, I'm taking the mosquito net, first, then if I get 2 tools, a magnifying glass (& sneak a tampon size bottle of xanax)

    Besides the radios you see in the video, I suggest one with AM, FM, shortwave, and weather stations. AM and FM are for local news and information, but Shortwave can receive from stations across the country. I listen to the Ukraine war on SW.
    A Ham radio is also useful in an emergency, and is not expensive (about $20-$25) and you should have an amateur radio license, even though you don't need it in an emergency (to listen.) Having the license shows you know what to listen to.

    It is definitely expensive to prep if you don't make enough money. Especially considering that often we are prepping for more than just ourselves. It is $250 for the correct gas mask that can protect you from radiation. Even used army gear is close to $200 to $500 for a camo outfit w/loadout package, & that doesn't include a bulletproof vest and a weapon. And it all requires time and money to be an excellent prepper, & to fully be prepared, so I recommend slowly acquiring things over the years, as I have done. But I'm probably screwed, because I still cannot afford an underground bunker.

    Yeah those SOS food bars are mainly for giving your body the calories and energy you body needs to keep moving. Yeah they aren't food replacements but they're there just in case you're unable to prepare or are able to have access to food for the moment. 1 pack has 9 bars and at 400 calories per bar. That means eating 3 of those bars will give an adult male his minimum daily amount of calories to sustain himself for the day. So that pack is essentially giving you 3 days worth of calories.
    As for fire starters/tinders it is way better and cheaper to make your own. Like those wafer things you show are around $10 for like 5-6 of those. They're basically a slightly different version of the cotton pad and wax. For $10 you can make between 100-200 of them. You can make many different type of fire tinders in bulk for a fraction of the price m

    There's many items you can repurpose, make yourself or buy cheaper alternatives. Most of my containers for outdoor use are plastic containers from food and drinks, my alcohol bottle for alcohol stove used to be a cat milk bottle. You don't need paracord for everything, jute twine is inexpensive and actual fishing line will be more useful than the inside strands of parcord. Bailing twine, regular nylon cord, more the merrier. I just bought a dehydrator for not much money but the bargains are getting hard to find, combine it with a vaccume sealer and you can make your own (almost) MREs for a fraction of the cost and it's your choices you will eat.

    Seriously, get a good 20,000mAh power bank with multiple outputs (so you can charge multiple devices at the same time) and a good small portable solar panel with good output (2A, 20W will do). Then you can skip all the expensive gimicky so-called solar powered devices with tiny solar panels and buy good quality USB rechargeable gear.
    Also, the Sawyer Mini (or any other that comes in that kind of form) is hands down the best type of water filter because it can fit on almost any standard drinks bottle that can be found almost anywhere and it can be used in squeeze (some effort) and gravity (no effort) filtration systems. Hand pump filters are the worst, not because they don't filter water well, but because they are generally bulky, heavy and take a lot of physical effort. God gave you the 2nd strongest force in the universe, gravity, so use it. The 1st is love. =)
    Best cheap firestarting material IMHO is a small bottle of petroleum jelly and a compressed pack of cotton balls. Fluff up a cotton ball, wipe up some jelly onto it and light it. Separately, they can also be used for first aid.

    • @jdshl8423
      @jdshl8423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wondersofwa2792 , ah I understand your frustration. The problem is actually getting "original" brand named products because there are so many counterfeits out there. I use original Xiaomi power banks because they are relatively cheap, but as always, I didn't know they were original until I received them and actually used them over a few months. I recommend Anker and Nitecore power banks, but they are very pricey, which I am still unwilling to fork out. As for small foldable solar panels, there are a lot of them on Aliexpress, and most of them do work and last quite a while, again depending on your luck, so you should pay attention to the reviews. I'm still using a BigBlue panel I bought many years ago from Amazon and 2/3 of the ports are still working. If you want panels with true performance and warranties, you will have to buy American brands and they don't come cheap. Anker and Nitecore do also have panels, and they are also not cheap.

      Most of my life I just used whatever was handy a firestarter, for a long time I used strips of wax soaked cardboard boxes that I got from the Asian food market dumpster, they were ok but took a lot of feathering the edges for them to light. Once they lit you could skip other tinder and go straight to the largest kindling. Our dryer lint has way too much pet hair to be pleasant burning. However once I discovered cottonballs and vaseline I was hooked!! I dip mine in a 50/50 solution of melted paraffin and vaseline, then squish them flat to remove the excess. Less messy but when it gets below freezing I warm them up a bit in my breast pocket to make breaking them up easier.
