Such a bucket list moment for Billy, so happy for him. Tony expressed to a number of folks that when he passed, the guitar would go to Wyatt. Seems that hasn’t really came to fruition. That being said, it’s great that it was made available to Billy. Just think how many people at that concert then went online and discovered Tony Rice…

If I remember correctly, this is a guitar that Tony Rice intentionally sold. He used it on his last tour, if I remember the story correctly (I may be off) and he worked with a third party who guaranteed its provenance - it had been made specifically for him to his dictates, and there is even a video of him saying words to the effect of "this is my guitar, etc etc". And Billy picked it up a year or so ago, for a pretty penny if I recall (I think they may have been asking something like $40,000 for it? I might be talking out of my hat, my memory is not that great). I remember Billy getting on his video stream and he was quite happy, when he first bought it, and playing some licks on it.
NOTE: th-cam.com/video/W4cbffYQzmU/w-d-xo.html - The one that Billy Strings bought was a 2007 Santa Cruz that was made for Tony Rice. That's the one I was thinking of...

Or maybe this is a different guitar from that one :) As if I know. I do know about Billy's purchase of a Tony Rice guitar, but perhaps this is not that particular guitar.

Artists who become stars are exactly how people discover the roots. Just as Jerry Garcia opened up bluegrass to a world of young people back in 1970, Billy Strings is doing it now, leading his fans to Doc, Tony, the Stanleys, the Carters and much more. Those who love it will stick around and soak in the history.

I do agree that Tony Rice is a one-off. There's no questioning that by anyone decent. But this young man is going to find his own sound & style and be unique in his own way. I don't think imitation is even an issue here. I'm sure that Billy Strings is a huge fan of Tony Rice's playing as well. It'll be interesting to hear what he comes up with over time.

The city I grew up in had two great bluegrass Coffee Houses, which I attended every weekend from age 15 till 18. I was introduced to Bluegrass in the early 60’s, by my dads best friend Ray, Ray was from Oklahoma, his family, mom, dad, siblings, cousins, were all moving from the San Bernardino Mountains back to Oklahoma. I was just 6 & we were getting their family dog, but I got much more!! They had a Hoe-Down in the living room and everyone of them played and sang the best Bluegrass, my little mind was blown, I wanted to play fiddle and guitar and banjo 🪕 more than anything else in the world that night. In 4th grade I started violin lessons, I had been in school choir and church choir since 2nd grade. I got my first guitar for Christmas at 17. I taught my oldest son Sazuki violin when he started Kindergarten, he plays guitar, bass, banjo and trombone, like my husband, who is also extremely musical and from a musical family like mine, my dad played trombone, everyone in our family’s sing and play instruments, my younger sons included. Music has always been a huge part of my life. I love Jerry Garcia very much, saw him over and over, love NRPS and Old and In The Way, but I already loved Bluegrass, it was one of my first loves, just like Jerry’s, I was just the right age to see and love it all, my grandfather playing HeeHaw on TV, loving Earl Scruggs. Getting Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands 1st circle album with Doc Watson and Maybelle Carter, I was in Mendocino by then, yay! I escaped Southern California when I turned 20 & California on my 29th birthday. Happy as Hell 😊❤ Edit~I forgot to say how much I love BMFS!!!!!!❤❤❤❤

I couldn't see it, I'd be happy to play any Tony Rice guitar Santa Cruz, Martin whatever I'd probably start shaking, Miss that legend seen him in Chicago and he was the original reason for going to Merlefest every year where I found another 100 reasons to go but the legends are thinning out, the good news like Tony said about Nickel Creek when they were kids, with people like this Bluegrass has a great future .

Billy’s good, but Tony was the innovator. Listen to a lot of the jazz tunes tony recorded and some of his originals and you will see just how musically correct he is, truly a perfectionist. Billy’s a fast picker but you can tell his technique borrows many genres and that works for him but Tony clearly spent a lot of time and effort in developing his own technique all from bluegrass and jazz influence. But yeah billy is fast but I’d argue Tony in his prime was a more precise and fast picker, more musically inclined and Billy has a sound more widely accepted by a modern generation due to the direction music has taken now a day.
Just wanna clarify that I have the upmost respect for both but they are very different and have strengths in different areas.
