Why Google, Microsoft, and Apple Are Fighting For Classrooms

  • Google, Microsoft and Apple are battling for dominance in classrooms. They all want their devices in the hands of the next generation of consumers.
The U.S. education-tech market is expected to hit $43 billion this year, with much of the growth coming in K-12 education, according to a study by Technavio.
Apple used to have the most devices in U.S. schools, but Google soared to the top after the release of the Chromebook in 2011. In 2018, Chromebooks made up 60 percent of all laptops and tablets purchased for U.S. K-12 classrooms, up from just 5 percent in 2012. Microsoft is second at 22 percent, followed by Apple, with 18 percent of shipments to U.S. schools in 2018, according to data from Futuresource Consulting.
Google has a majority of the U.S. education tech market largely because Chromebooks are so affordable. But Apple and Microsoft are making moves to try to change that.
Watch the video to learn how Apple and Microsoft are making moves to change that.

I worked in K12 tech for 6+ years. I can assure you that Apple told us that the education market was not a priority for them. Google was BY FAR the most engaged in helping education institutions - they developed G Suite for Education which is fantastic, the chromebooks are cheap, work great, and less fragile than iPads. The biggest issue we had with apple products is that you have to use device based management instead of user based management and the fact that you HAVE to use Apples terrible Apple Configurator to provision the devices and then use a 3rd party MDM to manage them. Google > Microsoft > Apple ....I'm not an apple hater...but this is the consensus from my experience and the experiences of the 40 or so people that I know that do the same job in K12.

Rural towns always had the short end of the stick. Sadly towns that can only rely on one source of income will always be forced into the same jobs over and over again allowing for no growth potential, investing in such towns for any reason other then goodwill is unprofitable, as the students will end up never using the tech again pass their school days.

I agree with you. This just widening the gap between rich and poor. Education should not have a price. The rich can make their brats smarter but working class parents can’t even buy books for their kids. The government should ensure every child especially at the public school get the same tools and access to education as what the private school have.

Can't relate to any of this. As a senior at a public high school, we've never had iPads or chromebooks. You go to a computer lab, or use the library computers. It's nice because the newer desktops are powerful, but there's so few available and many of the older ones don't work at all.

Each school within my district is running pilot tests, one uses Chromebooks, mine uses iPads and others use just a standard laptop. Each and every student has their own device no matter the school.
It’s great but most students are tired of it, no teacher interaction anymore! Same for things like Discovery Education and Amplify Science, the teacher is required to teach from something they don’t enjoy and we can obviously see that and it’s so draining. Getting up everyday, staring at an iPad in a dark classroom with only one overhead light illuminating the room really gets to you.
Currently have some 50 some days of school left in the year and standardized testing now comes along, already took MISA, next is Parcc and other sure as hell unfair grading. Really breaks my heart knowing these schools and districts are choosing to do it just for more funding if majority scores higher than average, there shouldn’t even be an average when it comes to education. Every student is their own individual and has their own standards.
I love science and ELA, along with history and tech but the curriculums just stand in the way..

Nowadays our school emphasizes a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) but has chromebook checkout for financial reasons. Now in High School it’s all Chormebooks but we have a computer lab full of M1 iMacs. A vocational technical school which my district runs had some old Dells running Windows 10 and they were replaced by more Dells running Windows 10 since I think run software that’s only compatible with Windows so no iMacs or Chromeboxes. The teachers on the other hand have better technology, the Teachers gets MacBook Pros and I believe the middle school teachers get Chormebooks now. But we usually use Chrome with Google classroom. Then once u hit HS aka 7th grade u are given a cheap chromebook or Windows laptop. That is then what u use until u graduate.
This is how the system is done so for all those who don't understand why they would use ipads for everything, THEY DON'T. The kids are switched over when they are given assignments that are harder. Meaning when they finally have to type up page long writing papers.
There is a system for this and its working pretty good. Apple provides the tablets for the Non teens and Google provides the Chromebooks for teens. Simple.
