- In this series we put into practice the ideas that we discuss in the darktable from A to Z series.
The process is not planned in advanced and we follow my thinking process step by step from start to finish.
In this video, we pit the top two tone management modules: Sigmoid and FIlmic RGB, against each other in four wildly different photos.
For more information, refer to the darktable from A to Z playlist.

Looks like you've put a lot of work putting these vids out. Thank you for the upload.
Thank you for noticing Conny, appreciate it.
Hello, I have a problem. I work on scene referred workflow and it automatically turns color calibration module and make colors look better, but if i want to adjust white balance in wb module i cant. Sure, i can turn color calibration to none but then colors arent that good like they were with cat 16 mode. I have been trying to figure out how to deal with this all day. Any help? Thanx
Your videos are a great help to a new 4.2 darktable newbie. One request, I keep darkroom with photo open on the module you are using following along by stopping and going at major points. What is difficult to read are the modules and sub-menus on your screen as they are not quite in focus. If there is any way you can bring them into focus that would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I'm loving sigmoid. With filmic, if I took 200 pictures of my kids at home, it was irrealistic to adjust filmic for each photo, particularly with highlights, so I would select a few prototypical photos, adjust those and copy the settings to the others. With sigmoid, I very quickly adjust each photo, just like exposure and only have to worry about highlights in severe cases, and just like in your video, I get an instant pop. I would reserve filmic for more difficult photos such as your first.
The issue with pop is Filmic v6... I think most people would prefer v5 over v6 if they went back and started to use it with the newer defaults that are now being used with Filmic. Filmic v5 easily matches sigmoid and can go IMO beyond it for a range of adjustments... Sigmoid is a quick application but also people mess with Filmic too much and so feel its difficult.. There is a macro now that applies a configurable initial workflow to images and it will auto set exposure and filmic settings so those extras steps are not necessary.... Using v5 with preservation set to no... I can usually just autopicker the ranges and tweak the midtone saturation and its all set.... I also do not apply either of these by default. I like to see the image for what it is and then apply it... This really shows what is being added by the tone mapper...if you start with it on its hard to have that unbias view. Many times I will also edit without them using only the tone eq color balance usually some local contrast and diffuse and sharpen.... These edits when you can do them have way more detail and less issues with color that there is with the tone mappers... If the dynamic range is too hight well then for sure you need to add them but many images are fine without and might actually be worse off for using the tonemapping modules on them....
That's one of the things that I like about darktable and FOSS in general. You almost always have multiple ways to do something and you can choose whatever works best for you.
@@emrg777 great insight. I also prefer editing a couple of photos and really taking my time with them. However, that does not work for other photographers who want to edit a whole session in an hour. Both are valid requirements. Though I am not sure if darktable is for the second group in general.
@@emrg777 hi todd. Where is this macro? (Tbh, I can’t remember what a macro is, and I still need to upgrade to 4.2)
With sigmoid as it goes by design to white ...for most images you really can't use it without the tone eq so that is the best combination to assess what it will provide... Many people now just talk about filmic but they are using v6 simply because it was the new version... the gamut mapping in v6 and the maxrgb color preservation mode created situationa issue that put many people off using "FIlmic".. V6 Filmic exp with the old clip highlights HLR setting which should only be used ever is you use legacy wb created a lot of cyan, magenta and at times bluish artifacts. Only the new HLR modes are in essence modern wb aware....but thats another issue. If you stick with v5 filmic and no as the color preservation mode this is not an issue. It desaturates nicely to white and you can add back saturation with the filmic controls You saw it in your car photo...its hard not to get salmon or weird sky colors because v6 will fight you, there sigmoid was better... If people just revert to v5 with the new defaults and then tweak color with the latitude and the midtone saturation you will get basically the same result as sigmoid and you can get the yellows and sky colors that you want that v6 will fight you with... One user has made a patch to remove the gamut mapping from v6 and it behaves nicely for flowers and skys... V6 may be "technically" correct but the look is often not what is expected due to perpectual visualization by our brains.... There is a LUA script now called initial workflow that can set using the autopickers many of the intial module parameters including baseline 50% exposure and filmic black and white and tone eq boundries and CB chroma saturation denoise etc.. for one or more images... Using this images can be very close to ready from the get go.... its very clever... Sigmoid is quick but you must take care as it loses a lot of detail in the highlights hence the need for the tone eq. Filmic v5 can easily mimic this look as well as a range of looks due to better configurability.... So I guess it can be speed vs control....But definitely there are 2 real comparisons... sigmoid vs Filmic v5 and Sigmoid vs Filmic v6...they are quite different .....
Thanks Todd, I always appreciate your great contributions. I should have tested Filmic v5 as well but to be honest I almost forgot about its existence. :) I do not have a lot of problems with v6 but as you said, in some photos the result is not very pleasing. I will definitely make another video with V5 .
Good tip about the initial workflow LUA script. I will check it out.
