Thanks Hal for this overview of the Sigmoid module. How do you decide which of the three modules (Filmic, Sigmoid or Base Curve) to use on a particular image?
Hi Kim, you're welcome. I only use the base curve module if I'm doing a quick edit to compare photos or get a model's opinion. Until now it was an easy choice: Filmic. Stay tuned for the showcase video to compare the results of sigmoid to filmic. I still expect Filmic to be the most powerful of the two but maybe sigmoid will produce better results in some photos.
In some cases where 2 or all channels are clipped in a raw file - even the latest version of Filmic RGB tends to leave a magenta tone in those areas which at the same time seem difficult to reach with other tools than Retouch. In version 6 we had the option No - not to Preserve chrominance with Reconstruction, which to some extend could help. In such extreme cases Sigmoid delivers more (near) neutral tones - in my opinion.
Thank you! Waiting for the Showcase video!
