    I'm surprised that the Critic didn't mention how this film is a remake of a French movie called "Little Indian, Big City." That movie made Siskel and Ebert's worst of list when it was released in America in 1996, and this film made the very same list in 1997.
    It's like poetry, they rhyme.

      It is indeed a remake of a bad goofy film ... Like how True lies is a remake of a french movie with the same actors ... " la totale" .
      In both movies you have Thierry L'hermite and Partrick Timsit. .... And the remake follow exactly the original trail : bad movie => horrendous remake |Good movie => good remake.

    The mother was the shittiest person in the entire movie and, yes, I'm including the Russian mobsters. Let's just break down her actions: she leaves Tim Allen's character out of the blue after just one year of marriage, keeps their child a secret from him for 13 years, waits until he's about to marry someone else and then suddenly becomes violently insistent that he MUST be involved in the child's life and then sends her son to an unfamiliar country with his estranged father whom he met only days ago and who she hasn't seen for 13 years. Hell, is Tim Allen ever even given and proof that the kid is actually his? For all we know this whole thing was just a calculated ploy on the ex-wife's part to ruin Tim Allen's new relationship and emotionally manipulate him into coming back to her and joining the Amazonian cult that she'd been absorbed into.

      I dunno, I can see somebody who grows up surrounded by people who speak one language and only knows a single person who speaks English being stronger with the other language. Actually, one real life example of this I can cite is a guy who defected to North Korea during the Korean War. He was an American and had a kid while he was living there. Since the kid grew up surrounded by North Koreans and his Dad was the only native English speaker he knew, he grew up being much better speaking Korean.
      Sorry I can't recall his name, but if you want to know more he's the only American I know of to defect to North Korea and start a family, so you should have little trouble finding him. I think his first name was James. I don't think he's alive anymore, but there are still some good documentaries on him. Assuming you still care 3 years later lol.

    Yeah this movie was a flop. What also gets me is how this movie makes Charlotte an antagonist when she was basically right. We're supposed to hate Charlotte for being an uppity fashion designer who dislikes Mimi-Siku so much. However, from her point of view, she's just been introduced to a teenager with virtually zero social skills, who peeps on her in her bed while she's sleeping, and who lets his pet tarantula wander around freely. She does make an effort-even if a bit misguided-to befriend Mimi when she first meets him, but that niceness evaporates when he acts out of line. It also doesn't help that she seems genuinely sweet to Michael whenever the two are alone together.
    Since she doesn't want to have kids and wasn't happy to hear about Mimi, but she does make an effort to befriend Mimi at first. She only starts disliking Mimi after the kid repeatedly acts out of line. It's not hard to see why Charlotte becomes a bitch.

    • @reizak8966
      @reizak8966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As a kid, I thought she was a total bitch and was fully on the side of Mimi. As an adult...? I do still like Mimi, but I completely understand how she must feel.

    • @samflood5631
      @samflood5631 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And yet the movie paints the mother is the good character even though she abandoned the Tim Allen Character, lied to him about his son and manipulated him into taking Mimi-Siku into going to New York City with him, which was a terrible idea as he committed various crimes such as animal cruelty, indecent exposure by running around the city half naked, sexual harassment with the whole peeping on Charlotte while sleeping and other stuff he did in this movie. And worst of all, Tim Allen starts to feel bad for the mother and his son which causes him to break up with Charlotte, quit his job and flies to the Amazon where he'll be in a dangerous environment because of the poisonous plant life, dangerous wild life and harsh conditions.

    What I'm wondering is why the boy doesn't speak English very well. Even with the excuse of growing up with a bi/multilingual family, it doesn't make sense. Sometimes my friend (who speaks about five languages) gets confused with their language, sometimes asking the time in Dutch or asking for the salt half in Portuguese, still has great grammar and diction. With Mimisiku (?) he speaks in broken English, and since his mother doesn't seem horribly negligent, wouldn't it make more sense if instead of speaking like a caveman he just messed up certain phrases or words?

    • @productivediscord5624
      @productivediscord5624 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      For screenwriters and actors, it's easier to do broken English then to slip into another language or have poor diction which just might come off as poor acting. The same can happen in real life but that depends on whether the grammar is more complicated than the vocabulary. Most people learn the grammar rules faster because they are in constant practice while specific vocabulary comes up more in unique circumstances like asking for the time.

(And on the proper English, he learned enough to get by. If he was being raised as one of the natives he wouldn't need to learn much English, especially if he wasn't under her direct supervision like I posited before)

    • @juliendebroissia
      @juliendebroissia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Americans can produce some great movies... I just don't get why they have to redo everything that is great coming from other countries... Is it patriotism? I dunno. It's also a bit unfair of saying "Americans" like that, it's American studios that are at fault.

    • @TheCyberwoman
      @TheCyberwoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Carveros It's not patriotism, it's profit. A studio COULD buy the rights for an American release of a foreign film and show a subbed version in theaters, and they often do, but the audience is small. They don't have actors the public recognizes. and most people don't want to read. So, when an idea is good or atleast profitable, they remake with actors people will pay money to see, and often do so with little regard to quality.

    Also I wouldn’t say this is a kids film. I mean just because it has the Disney logo on it doesn’t automatically mean that it’s for kids. Not every movie Disney makes is for kids. I mean The Pirates of the Caribbean films are not directly for kids.
    This film was definitely centered more towards adults when it came out. It only got the PG rating because the MPAA at the time didn’t think this was a PG-13 movie even though it clearly is. Oh the 90’s. Good decade.

      Quinten Hines The Bible Reloaded did a review of the movie (The Atheist Delusion) and they break it down better than I could, so here's the long and short of it.
      No one can look at the complexity of the world and say that God or a higher power didn't create it, because it's too amazing and complex to have made itself. If they say anything but God, they're lying so they can not feel guilty about sinning.
      I'm not exaggerating in the slightest, he says all of that over the course of the movie. It's free on TH-cam I think, only ninety minutes or less. But I recommend The Bible Reloaded's review of it personally.

      Cool.
      I am no Athiest( the whole "science" buissness isn't my thing and I lean more on the "God may exist" then "it doesn't" camp.)
      but the whole "lying so they won't feel gulity" buissness just rubs me the wrong way.
      I'll probalbly give it a watch later on.

      Quinten Hines fair enough. Just keep a few things in mind.
      Most of the people he interviews are young college kids who don't have degrees in anything, making them appear to be idiots when Ray steers the conversation and asks them impossible questions.
      He edits a lot out and never shows the unedited footage of any of his movies.
      And the whole thing is an advertisement for his DVD and book set on how to proselytize. They show it at the end. You're warned.

    What terrible ending to teach to kids and adults. It’s ok to give up your entire education and career as well as breaking up with your fiancée who loves and support you just so you can be with a boy whose guilty of animal cruelty, running around half naked in a public city, sexual harassment and running on top of buildings and a woman who left you, didn’t mention that she has a son whose she’s been raising for the past 13 years and blackmails you into taking your son to live with you in NYC so he can sexually harass your fiancée, convince you to kill your boss and kill your fiancée’s pet cat.

      This is a Hollywood remake (and by that I mean that NOTHING of the plot was changed apart from locations) of "Un Indien dans la ville" ("An Indian in the city), a french "comedy". And yes, the original is almost as bad as the remake.
