Such an exciting final! If I remember right, it was broadcast in the uk at about midnight and I too was up off the sofa and screaming the boys on- fabulous!
I got up to watch this in the middle of the night- no way was I missing it. The Italians were closer at the line than I remembered, but even back then, I never had any doubt that GB would win. Matthew Pinsent wasn't letting anyone past.
I watched this whilst away from home on a work course , sat in a hotel room shouting my head off at the excitement , texting back and forth woth my family . at the end my wife simply sent a one word text, "Oarsome ". Along with Daily Thompson, Sir |Steve have always been my most admired Olympians, (With Matthew Pinsent a very close runner up of course) . Watching this now still brings me out in goose bumps .
I'm British but was living in New Zealand when the Sydney Olympics was on. Normally a very calm, quiet man, but the second half of this race was the one and only time I have ever got up out of my seat, screaming at the telly! Epic race. So proud of the GB crew - especially Tim Foster, from my old rowing club in Bedford, and Steve Redgrave, my rowing hero!
I remember how incredible it was watching this live - but also after watching GB, Italy and the Aussies cruise through their heats with stroke counts in the mid-30s. One of the reasons this BBC commentary was so exciting was the added drama of relaying what felt like a superhuman Dragonball-style power escalation in the closing stages. Phenomenal performance by all those crews.
One of THE most emotional and spectacular sporting achievements ever - along with fantastic commentary I remember watching it live in 2000 with tears in my eyes, and 24 years on - it still makes me cry Totally amazing 👍🏼
I'd never watched rowing before, im remember watching this live at the time and bursting into tears when gb got over the line. Was truly amazing and absolutely brilliant commentary.
Why on earth are these two especially Gary Herbert not commentating for Paris 2024 after doing every Olympics since 96 It’s especially brilliant listening to Herbert going mental when our boys / girls are doing well - however biased it may be
I remember this race perfectly, one of the most spectacular and emotionally races of all time. As italian very well done to Gb and Italy teams. I lost 4 pints as a bet with my english colleague, but it was worth it. After few months I saw very close Steve Redgrave as I was working in a private school in High Wycombe, You could see how he was a perfect athlete.

Some of the best sports commentary ever!
But both seem to have been dumped this time around for Paris - scandalous

I remember watching this in a pub very late in the UK and everyone crowding around the old TV set shouting and willing GB to a famous victory.
I thought it was in the morning? I
@@Atari-stfm perhaps I'd drank more than I remembered!
@@kingwells2 you might be right I just remember watching it before breakfast.. Funny how memory works

Rowers are the toughest guys in the world hats off to all of them
They're absolute lunatics with what they put themselves through
Thanks for this, good memories of my rowing days. Amazing race, that was some 4.
Thanks for this. Great commentary as well.
I watched this live in Crete (Malia) at about 1am or 2am Greek time. Those were the days
Amazing to watch this after watching ‘Goldfever’. You really are awarded if you sacrifice your utmost for your sport.
Never tire of watching this!
One the greatest races ever
Put that on a par with Waterloo and Trafalgar, mesmerising!
These videos are awesome. Thanks so much.
the great four! ... but only they know the price
Do you have any coverage of the Olympic Beijing semi finals?
Hard to see but I do think there were more British flags in the crowd than Australian.
I would recommend everyone to watch the Italian commentary of this race from Galeazzi. Pure emotions.
la mejor regata del universo
Who is the commentator? Don’t hear him on the coverage any more
Gary Herbert is one of them , he’s done every Olympics since 2000 but bizarrely not this one in Paris - scandalous
@@twright1983 replaced by a woman. Another box ticked.
