  • A simple comparison video to showcase the differences in mastering between the original release of 5150 and The Collection II. The video alternates between the two releases, in about 8 second increments, going track by track sequentially. The original release has had its volume adjusted to match the level of The Collection II to offer a more fair comparison of sound quality. 5150 was sourced from the original CD, whereas The Collection II came from mp3s provided by Amazon after purchasing the vinyl box set.
    My thoughts:
I personally love the remasters. Alternating between the two, as this video does, it shows how there's a slight harshness to the original release. CDs were only 3 years old when 5150 came out, and earlier analog to digital conversion were often criticized for lacking the "warmth" of say, a vinyl LP. I think the relative harshness from the original CD might be result of early A/D conversions, rather than just "being digital", as The Collection II sounds very warm, yet doesn't lack any high end. I think "Get Up" is the worst offender of this when auditioning both versions. I'm very impressed with what Bernie Grundman and Don Landee have done with these. The 5150 LP sounds great as well.
    TIMESTAMPS:

01:05 Why Can't This Be Love?
    02:09 Get Up
    03:14 Dreams
    04:19 Summer Nights
    05:24 Best Of Both Worlds
    06:28 Love Walks In
    07:33 "5150"
    08:31 Inside

I’ve been listening to the new albums and they do sound more clear. They also sound a bit louder which is fine. I agree that the bass is more prominent. I personally prefer the Roth era to Hagar, but love the Sammy songs and I’m grateful they finally got around to remastering them.
I would love to see the “Zero” tape get cleaned up and made into a stereo mix.
