Patriot Prime Reviews the G1 Transformers Top 10 Cartoon Vs Toy Disappointments

  • Now for something a little different.
Here's my TOP 10 list of Transformers Cartoon Vs Toy Disappointments.
Keep in mind, I'm just comparing G1 Toys and the way I felt in the 80's getting these bots for the first time and seeing how much they differed from their cartoon counterparts..
Like other children of the 80's I had no idea they were a line of preexisting toys imported from Japan.
I'm not hating on these classic figures.
    Well...maybe a couple.

When I was a kid I loved that Jetfire cuz I was a huge fan of Robotech and it was the only "Robotech-ish" toy I could get my hands on for years.

As insightful, informative, and entertaining as this review was, keep in mind a lot of the toys from the 70's and 80's didn't mirror the actual characters from the cartoon shows and movies. Quite frankly, a lot of us old school soldiers growing up during that time didn't care, either. They weren't perfect, but we had fun with them all the same. Toy technology, of course, has over the years evolved. Now today's toys can almost, not entirely, appear as we see them on film and television. Myself, personally, I get a nostalgic kick out of seeing these classic toys. A reminder of how much simpler and fun times were.

yeah we had to use our imagination way more back in the day. I remember my friend havin ironhide. I remember thinkin it was weird it havin no head. But we still played with it. In our minds it was still ironhide. So much of it was different from the cartoon. I think thats why nowadays transformers fans appreciate the toon aesthetic and why its so popular, its what we really wanted when we were kids

Great video as always, but any inaccuracies (apart from the Jetfire/Valkyrie situation) are down to Sunbow et al since the majority of the toys existed well before the cartoon.
Wheelie, however, is just an unforgivable abomination.

Jetfire/Skyfire was the one exception where the toy was WAY cooler looking than the boring cartoon design, IMO.

    My top ten worst:
    10. 1984 Minicars. With the exception of Cliffjumper, not a single one of these guys remotely resembled their counterparts.
    9. Blitzwing. Where are his feet?
    8. Hound. Look at his baby arms. Love this toy, but his arms are really puny.
    7. Springer. Ok his car and helicopter modes are pretty cool, but the robot is stiff and blocky and bland.
    6. Superion. The individual Arialbots are ok, but in Superion mode, he looks like a robot on stilts.
    5. Rodimus Prime. Super cool vehicle mode, lackluster throwaway robot mode.
    4. Megatron. This guy is pretty cool, but the transformation gimmick is clearly based around gun mode first and robot secondary. Marvel took a lot of liberties to make this guy look humanoid in appearance for the Sunbow animation.
    3. Wreck Gar. What the hell happened to his head? His bike mode is blocky as hell, and looks like a terrible kitbash.
    2. Ironhide/Ratchet. Gorgeous vehicle modes, but what the hell happened in robot mode? Nothing works! The legs are already for G1, but the arms look like spindly twigs, the chest/head thing may be alright for a Diaclone toy, but no way was this thing going to translate on screen without heavy liberties taken.
    1. Broadside. This is the worst looking Transformer I have ever seen. At least Ironhide and Ratchet have an excuse, they were not designed to be autonomous robotic lifeforms, but piloted mechs, but Broadside doesn't have that excuse, this guy was a Transformer first and foremost, and despite an attempt to make him somewhat like his animation model, without stickers, you cannot tell where his legs are, has the most uninspired and lazy transformation ever, and because he's almost the size of an arialbot you couldn't even use him as a proper aircraft carrier, basically Broadside is just effing terrible.

It's always fun to look at lists like this. Cause they always bring up the characters I liked. It might have to do with the fact that I didn't have the same cartoon and toy relationship, since I never saw the cartoon as a kid. I had a few comics, but in general, I was left with the toys. And I just liked the bizzare look on some of them (Ratchet especially). Second, I found the differenced in the toys and the comics sort of fascinating, but didn't think too much about it. That was a whole different rabbithole to dive into recently, when I've been able to find information on why that was the case so often. If should mention one that was a disapointment, then it was the shell of skullgrin. Though, I gotta admit that it's grown on me. And Thunderwing. Such a good looking character and then you realize that he only has a face and no head.

    • @PatriotPrimeReviews
      @PatriotPrimeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I didn't get the Skullgrin toy until about 6 years ago and my immediate thought was "He looks nothing like he did in Marvel."
      Thanks for watching.

LOL, Patriot Prime Jr. is such a cute boi. :D
I don't mind the differences between the show and toys, becuase I kind of understood that sometimes looking like the toys in a TV show doesn't work that well (Gobots is proof of that), so you have to redesign stuff. But yeah, I can understand why people wouldn't be thrilled about the design differences.

I have a love/hate relationship with the G1 toys. One problem I have is the scale. The minnies were way to small. The combiners with exception of devastator had one big robot while the other 4 were small. Devastator by far was the best combiner. But all the combiners should have been bigger than what they were. Shockwave and Blaster were way to big, towering over everyone.

My top 10 (stuff from G1 that disappointed me not differences between the cartoon and the toys):
    10. G1 Megatron toy (you know why)
    9. Not many episodes in season 4
    8. The one frame where Optimus doesn't have his mouthplate
    7. All the discoloration
    6. Giving us Daniel
    5. Giving us Wheelie
    4. WHERE ARE RATCHET AND IRONHIDES HEADS
    3. The movie didn't do so well in the box office
    2. My dad couldn't afford the G1 toys
    1. The fact that Hasbro killed off random characters just because they're toys didn't sell that well

I actually liked the Bumblebee toy better than the cartoon. My first introduction to the character was through the Marvel comic #2, so the shielded face looked right to me. The cartoon face seemed cheesy to me as a kid.

  • @jpatt1000
    @jpatt1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Fortunately the third party makers have remedied the toon vs toy disparity. (I just wish they weren't so expensive!) I just got the X-Transbots Stunticons and they are awesome (though fragile). I did get the Walmart re-issue Bumblebee to fill that spot in my G1 collection and I really do like the new cartoon head sculpt on it. Jetfire? The only reason I wanted him was because I also liked Robotech and that's all I could get as a kid. (Now I have a proper lineup of Macross Chunkies from Bandai.) Wheelie is the fugliest of the G1 figures. I never thought Trailbreaker looked too far off (other than having red Oakleys instead of blue, Hoist was closer to the toon) Wheelie is the fugliest G1. It looks like a McDonald's toy! Brawn was my very first Transformer so very special to me! (Got a GoBots Dumper the same Christmas. Didn't take my parents long to see which company had the better quality and hence their money at Christmas and birthday times!) Yes, Ironhide/Ratchet were a disappointment. The third party head attachments brings their hideousness down a notch or two towards "Okay, now we're getting somewhere." territory.
Now if you wanted toon/toy cohesion, take a gander at GoBots. They drew the toon directly from the toys and had Ironhide and Ratchet been on there, well they'd be talking through their windshield just like Z-mon and Dr. Go! (I do have to say I really like Bernard Eckhard's voicing of Cy-Kill and most of the TF cast is actuall on GoBots too.) I am more into Transformers but Action Toys Masterpiece Bike Robo drew me in just because they include three Cy-Kill face sculpts and the figure looks fantastic (and is quite large).

  • @chuckles500
    @chuckles500 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I gave the first 2 waves a pass because the toys originated from Japan first, a few years before the cartoon came out. We could fault Sunbow for not making the cartoon characters look exactly like their toys, but they improved the looks of them, so it’s ok.
Now wave 3 and after(the movie and season 3 characters) where Hasbro had more of a hand in creating the toys…yeah, those sucked, and had no reason to make the toy look so different from the cartoon.
But Jetfire has always been my favorite toy growing up. They wanted to use the design in the cartoon(they did in the animated portion of the toy commercial), but couldn’t because of Robotech

  • @DragoonMS
    @DragoonMS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    1. Rodimus Prime: This clown could've nailed it...but then you realize that he looks more like somebody's grandpa than Rodimus Prime.
    2. Almost any of the combiners: Superion was anorexic compared to the animation model, Menasor looked nothing like the animation (a large part being Motormaster's fault), Predaking almost had it but the wings and stuff weren't quite there, Defensor looked odder than the already goofy looking show model...
    3. Astrotrain: having a white robot mode highlighted all the design faux pas the animation model ain't have.
    4. Windcharger: I can forgive the Minibots in general. Small little McBastards. But Windcharger? Com'on, maaan...Gears & Brawn look more like themselves than this abomination.
    5. Fortress Maximus: The problem is Cerebros, who is effectively the Takara Fortress from The★Headmasters. And we wouldn't see a screen accurate Cerebros until the Titans Return Fortress Maximus.

  • @Futurevoiceactor

I didn’t think wheelie was bad. Voiced by Welker, he’s great. I just prefer the Titans return version now. But when I had the G1, it still beat the hell out of the buck tooth character from Revenge of the Fallen voiced by spongebob.

    8: Warpath
    7: Scourge
    6: Devastator

I'm older than you and so had fewer T-formers. But I played with a lot of the early ones. Disappointments? Megatron, the toy was hard to play with and fragile. Jetfire, I preferred the toy's Robotech sculpt! I was mad when the cartoon version didn't look like him. Maybe because I was older, I preferred the Diaclone toy sculpts over the cartoon versions most of the time.

Great vid! What's funny, is that I only felt some of these were bad when I was a kid. I love them now, even the bad ones. Ha.
Reflector disappointed me as a kid. He's still my favorite Transformer character (even I don't know why). I just wanted the cartoon look.
Omega Supreme - He sure looked good, but as a kid I thought he was more like Legos than Transformers.
    Springer... What happened there?

    • @Martynde
      @Martynde 6 ปีที่แล้ว

The character design was made up without any thought of how a toy could be made of it with 1980s technology - plus he was a triple changer which makes it even harder to replicate the character model exactly.

  • @windsweeper8002

    I'd add the following:
    Broadside
Optimus Prime. That head sculpt with the creepy yellow optics did not make Prime look heroic.
Sandstorm. I just don't like faceplates.
    Swindle
    The Throttlebots
    Flywheels
    Hardhead
    Blurr
    Hot Rod
    Swoop
    Wildrider
    Apeface
    Breakdown
    Perceptor
    Omega Supreme
    Tracks
    Blaster
That said, some toys looked better than the animation model:
    Motormaster
    Dead End
    Ultra Magnus
    Smokescreen
Ramjet. The Conehead thing looks goofy especially when people do it with the G1 toys.
    Kickback
    Dirge
    Thrust
    Scorponok
    Snapdragon
    Misfire
    Highbrow
    Kup
    Onslaught
    Grimlock
    Sludge
    Metroplex

my list is not g1 as I grew up in the 90s - mostly beast wars
    show vs toy disappointment
10 - terrorsaur (he deserved a better toy than that tiny terrodactyl)
09 - scorponok (bumble bee gimick absolutely ruined toy - badly designed.. if you have one today its most likely broken)
08 - rail racer (nice set overall but is ruined by midnight express's weak legs)
07 - hasbro transmetal megatron (badly designed waist - most likely broken on ebay - I love my takara one now)
06 - rhinox (bad just all around)
05 - sideburn (transformation is too difficult)
04 - armada optimus prime supreme (basically a giant brick with a stupid minicon)
03 - tigatron - deserved more than a cheetor repaint (mine is takara so I can't really complain - the face is what erks me)
    02 - cheetor - looks more like a tiger than a cheeta
01 - transmetal rattrap (for the life of me will not stand up in robot mode - also everytime I touch him he leaves a trail of metal flake lol)

(Actually got him, hated even looking at him so much that I GAVE him away, then later when I was thinking about recovering my original G1 figures for my collection, I got him again...STILL HATED HIM, ONLY MORESO...so I got rid of him again, lol.) The TR Wheelie is pretty good though.
    2) Cosmos...yeah.
    3) Warpath...yup...uh-uh.
    4) Megatron.
I know there were more, but drawing a blank beyond these guys at the moment, although Wheelie alone makes the top 6 slots by himself, so I guess I have my Top 10 after all...(Seriously, WHO at Hasbro thought that was a good design in the first place?! His toy was like the Jarjar Binks of Transformers...only worse, if that's even possible...)
As for your Ironhide & Ratchet figures, there's a 3rd Party company that has actually made some nice heads for those figures, so they don't stink as much. (My friend got them, so I've had them in hand, and they make a real difference. That was his first ever 3rd Party purchase.)
I believe, they're still available, with a little searching...if you're interested in making them nicer figures?
    Another great video! Thanks!

This is the reason that i have never been a fan of the g1 toys i love the show but the toy where a big disappointment the only good quality they had is that they where die cast and if you took care of them they would last you a life time like old Tonka trucks

All the S1/S2 toys came first, so technically the show isn't toy accurate.
    Just wanted to say that.

True, but 80's me didn't know that back then.
MARVEL at least kept them toy accurate until issue 3.

You didn't put the combiners some of the old combiner where horrible looking specially when you put the individual part by themselves you got one big brick and four tiny ones. Look how g1 motormaster looks i think he looks horrible and what about the seacons another one that looks horrible the only good looking g1 combiners where devastator and liokaiser.

Buy gear 4 toys or transformers go

  • @Martynde

Yes, how dare that those 1982 toys not look anything like the characters do in the 1984 cartoon.

    • @PatriotPrimeReviews
      @PatriotPrimeReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, but us 9 year old kids in 1984 didn't know they shipped over from Japan from a preexisting line.

Still not the toys fault. It's the cartoon you should be attacking for changing the appearances from the existing toys the characters were based upon. Except for the new movie characters other than Ultra Magnus as in that case the cartoon character came first without thoughts on how a toy could be made of it - leading to some very awkward looking movie toys. That is no excuse for Galvatron's color scheme though.

      Very true.
But the point of this video was how we as kids felt in the 80s when we first got these toys.
The toon definitely humanized the characters look, we wouldn't have cared as much for Ironhide if he looked like his toy.
Galvatron would been such an easy fix. :/

oh man, Galvatron is a mess. Really, maybe the ugliest transformers toy ever! Not only it has no resemblance to the character, but its ugly as hell. It reminds me of a nurse ghost from a schizofrenic clinic in 1930s...

Can’t blame the toy’s because they predate the cartoon by almost 10 years- blame the artist,

Sorry but this was a poor list and comparison, the last few , from wheelie on down I'm with you, but Galvatron? Megatron? Cyclonus?? Nah man even as a kid I knew they did a great job with what they were capable of back in the day, and you were supposed to finish the corralation with something called your IMAGINATION. Skyfire? Loved him, still got him. Even I knew he was a borrowed model from the robotech series. Again fill in the blanks with your imagination. But yeah some blanks were too big to fill, with Ironhide and ratchet 😫
