      Ey, Scotty! I recently got my permit and I’ve been driving in my mother’s Lexus RX330. It’s a pretty sturdy car, got nearly 100,000 miles on it. Do I want to get a slightly more modern car when I get my license, or stick with the Lexus? PS: I’m aware that Toyota makes Lexus cars, so they’re obviously good quality.

      To clarify about parking on a hill, I don't want to put my '06 Toyota Sienna Van in park and THEN put the emergency brake on? I want to FIRST put on the emergency brake while I have my foot on the brakes, then after, with my foot still on the brake, put the car in park? Or do I put on the emergency brake, take my foot off the brakes, and then put the car in park?

    Scotty, let me thank you for the good you are doing. Earlier today, I parked on a steep hill and had to get my car towed cause the axle broke. Every time I park, I always put the ebrake on. My mistake is that I always shifted to park first. Thus, every time I start the car and shift into drive i can feel the strain I put onto my transmission. I knew I was doing something wrong, I just didn’t know what. After tonight’s events and watching your video I now know for sure to always put the ebrake on before shifting into park.

    I am 70 and only recently learned about putting on the emergency brake when parking. I read the owner's manual. The only thing is I hold the brake pedal down, then put it in park, then with the brake peddle still down, I engage the parking brake. There is no vehicle movement to catch the transmission. Now it's automatic for me to do it. Nice tip.

    What I have been doing (while parking on a hill) is:
    pull up, brake.
    Shift into neutral
    Apply emergency brake (normal brake still applied)
    Release brake so vehicle is resting on emergency brake
    Then shift into park.
    Is this a good idea? What do you think Scotty?

    • @PauloHeaven
      @PauloHeaven 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little bit simpler,
      - I park
      - When still applying the brake, I shift into park,
      - I put the e-brake on,
      - Then I release the brake pedal.
      I don't know how useful it is, maybe it is very much, maybe tranmissions' parking metal pins are made to support the car weight 10 years before breaking, but I think it is certainly a bit fragile anyway so my instinct asks me to preserve it, I do it and I think it is a good practice.

    • @pacotilla55
      @pacotilla55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rudy Salas I always do too after having so many transmission problems with my old cars I’ve gotten used to it. Although I’m kinda confused on what Skotty said at the beginning of the video. What I do when I park is I first come to a stop using the brake then put the emergency brake and put it in park or viceversa, put it in park then put the emergency brake (always stepping on the brake) to keep the car from moving backwards and putting tension on the transmission. I hope I’m not doing it wrong 🤞

    • @HoosierInNJ
      @HoosierInNJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pacotilla55I had to listen to the video a few times myself but I believe you're right, I come to a stop and before I remove my foot from the brake I put it in park, then I apply the emergency break, THEN I remove my foot from the break, this keeps the car from rocking and resting on the transmission. Been doing it this way for decades and I believe that's what he meant.

    Some people are dumb with automatic transmissions. They just slam it from drive to park with out freeing the transmission first. So best way is to go from drive to neutral, then once car isn’t rolling use hand brake and either keep it in neutral or got to park if you are that paranoid about your car rolling away. I do it all the time my self in my v8 and it’s the best way to preserve the transmission and avoid unnecessary wear and tear.

  • @elfpimp1

    Scotty, @3:10, the cranking,non starting magnum, if it has a tachometer, watch it as you crank the engine. If it bounces, the timing sensor is good. If it doesn't bounce, it's the timing sensor. I've had this happen on my '86 Porsche 944 and my 2000 Land Rover Discovery II. Watching the tachometer on both is what lead me to the problem and eventual fix.

  • @BalooUriza
    @BalooUriza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    It's gotta be really flat, though. If your car rolls until the parking pin stops it when you let your foot off the brake, you're now straining the transmission. Best to just always set the parking brake anyway.

      I've gotten in the habbit of putting the car in neutral with my foot on the brake, setting the parking brake then letting the car settle onto the parking brake then put it in park. I think the parking prawl on the transmission was originally intended to be a last ditch failsafe should the Parking Brake fail for whatever reason.

    • @BalooUriza
      @BalooUriza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joecostantino3684 This is correct, though if you're getting movement enough to bind up the parking pawl after setting the brake firmly, you need to get that cable tightened. This might be easy to fix on your own, for example my truck's owner's manual says it's self-adjusting and you can tighten it by firmly applying the brake, then shift to reverse and back up with the parking brake firmly applied about one vehicle length. Consult your owner's or service manual.

Pet peeve of mine is everyone (including you Scotty, sorry ;-) ) calling it the "emergency brake" and not properly the Parking Brake. It's not for emergencies, it's for parking. I've known people who never use it and it ends up rusted and useless when they really need it. Never mind the potential damage to the transmission lock.
