    Great video. I've been using the s5ii for a little over a month. Nobody is talking about the photography side of it. I'm an amateur but I quickly noticed how great it is at taking photos.

      Tossing up between this and A7IV as an upgrade from my Nikon Z30. I was leaning towards the Sony because of the resolution, the autofocus and great high ISO performance. The S5ii is no slouch though. This was really informative.

    Excellent video,James. I actually bought the S5ii mainly for stills photography so I really appreciate videos on the camera that focus on the photo side of things. I use the 50/1.8 and the 85/1.8 a lot but I’ve been thinking of adding the 35/1.8 so thanks for featuring it in the video.

      How's it doing when using flash? There's not much flash options out there yet for it. I'm nervous with using it for stills because lack of support in that area. Also how's the overall AF speed when tracking ppl?

    Im considering the the s5ii. I started off in photography with Panasonic so i have a soft spot for the brand. My main reasom for wanting to switch potentially (aside from price compared to my canon set up) is the real time LUT. I adored the fuji film simulations when i shot with that for a few years. And now you can make your own recipes or purchase others and put them in to your s5ii and you've got yourself completely customizable/unique jpeg looks sooc. I think that is a beautiful thing. And love that it works for photos as well as video. So yeah its like having a full frame Fuji! Beautiful stuff.

      I have an s5 and the experience shooting on it is great. Even on the original the AF is actually fast. Biggest issue is Sony and Canon use different descriptors for their AF and folks expect lumix to do the same. Example is what this reviewer said: human detect works better on face a d eye than eye detect. Not the users fault. Expectation for settings is awkward

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree, I think LUMIX need to be clearer about the difference between human and face/eye. Even after reading the manual it’s not clear why I’m getting considerably better performance in Human mode.

    Excellent review, man! I’m happy with the photo quality of the S5II, and the 1.8 primes. I’ve already shot a few gigs in the last two months with it, and coming from the A7IV, the files are so much easier to work with in terms of color. The AF can miss every now and then, but so did my Sony. I also shot a short narrative film withe the S5II, and the open gate anamorphic recording is next level.
    I do agree that Lumix needs to release some more f/1.4 primes with breathing corrections already built in. The way Sigma’s f/1.4 lenses breathe is just not acceptable for me.

    • @JustinWilliams-hn2bc
      @JustinWilliams-hn2bc ปีที่แล้ว

      So you are finding the open gate shooting useful? It is defiantly what is drawing my attention when switching cameras.

    • @AbdonPhirathon
      @AbdonPhirathon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinWilliams-hn2bc Absolutely! Open Gate unlocks the whole sensor area and allows you to crop in whichever way you choose. Not only that, but the extra bump in resolution makes it less problematic to crop when editing in a 4K timeline. As far as I’m aware of, only the GH6 and the XH2 will give you that ability, albeit in a cropped sensor. You can get open gate with the S1 or the S1H, but at this point, they’re going to be more expensive, and will not provide any meaningful upgrades (unless the S1HII is able to shoot in Open Gate 6K60).

  • @marceln2

    Great video. I watched it and also the the comparison with R6 ii and a7 iv multiple times.
    I'm considering S5 ii for photography (rather shorter focal lengths landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street, travel, no sports/birds). R6 II is amazing but the cost of ecosystem including lenses is hard to justify for me as a non-professional.
    I'm deciding between a7 IV and s5ii. They cost the same now in Switzerland (Sony is very popular here and on sale).
    Sony has a better lens selection and 33 Mpix but I didn't hear good things about ibis. Sony also has a big selection of bodies so when upgrading one can keep the lenses and have body for a desired purpose.
    I'm still leaning towards S5 ii even though it has lower resolution because I shoot for fun and the display and UI seem better. The lens selection is more limited than Sony but better than Canon RF options and could grow with the popularity of new Panasonic cameras and Partnership with Leica. The selection of Panasonic bodies is smaller as well, although they seem to be introduced at lower prices which makes it easier to upgrade when new model comes out.
    I also found rumors about new s1(h/r) body being released soon so I want to wait a few days to see what will happen.
    Sony definitely wins the ecosystem with support from retailers, local shops and second hand gear in Switzerland. Panasonic seems a little absent/niche in Switzerland.
    Also Panasonic is priced at eur 2300 for body and 2500 for kit in Germany which means it loses the price advantage as sony body is getting on sale often being it a 2021 model.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! That's definitely a tough call. Could you rent both and see what you think? For photo, as you said, Sony have a few upgrade paths in the A1, A7R cameras etc as well as all the great lenses and more that the Lumix mount has. There's so many advantages to Sony on paper, and they are technically excellent, but after using them they are just not the right cameras for me. That's why I would always recommended trying them out if you can.

    Great video! Good to see someone focusing on the photo side as well. I'm very much 50/50 hybrid between photo/video.
    How do you find it in terms of switching dynamically on the fly, lets say if you're doing a photo + video portrait session at the exact same time. Could you grab a v-log clip with the video record button, stop, then fire off a couple raw photos before/after? Or does it require any reconfiguring to do that?
    My A7 III sort of does this but I have to switch to a custom mode to apply the picture profiles for video, then swap back to manual mode for photos (to remove said picture profile since it does for some reason affect the RAW file)
    So I'm hoping the S5 II will be more elegant here, and the IBIS looks amazing for video vs the A7 III which I find is really lacking for handheld video.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found the S5 II to be a pretty great hybrid. I had it set up so M on the mode dial was for photo, and C1 was for video. So just two clicks of the mode dial would swap between. You could probably use a single profile for both photo and video but using shutter angle and VLOG would throw things off for photo settings.

    • @Matt-fo4gg
      @Matt-fo4gg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesReader Thanks for the info 👍 that's similar to how I set it on the A7 III too, worked well. I suppose doing it in one mode is too tricky to solve operation wise at least at the moment.
      I've not used V-log before (just S-log) but I'm guessing you mean it would under or overexpose the photos a lot when using that for video as a side effect? Even if V-log itself isn't directly affecting the raws in a negative way.

    Although I understand the attraction of face & eye autofocus, I have yet to use a camera that can do it reliably enough to make it a worthwhile substitute for standard single-point autofocus. This is particularly the case when the distance between you and your subject remains essentially the same. (This includes the escalator shots, BTW.) If the distance changes it takes less than a second to re-focus. Stop down to a reasonable aperture and depth-of-field will take care of any minor errors. All that being said, I love the look of the photos and appreciate the effort that went into this review.

    Hi. Thank you for this great video. The S1 was my main camera for photo and video. The quality was great with the lumix s pro 50mm 1.4. But I ended up switching to sony because of the weight of the lumix and the limits of contrast detection. Lumix lenses used to be very expensifs before these 1.8 primes, and sigma lenses were not an option because of the bad afc performance in video. It was my only drawbacks with panasonic. The S5ii is a game changer. I want to have a second body for video work, and I am happy I didn't sell my panasonic gear. Goodbye sony ! I won't miss your menu system, your lack of firmware update, insuffisant stabilization, not so good color science, and your overprice camera body. I can´t wait to play with this small prime lenses. I want to try to do portrait with a 24mm thanks to you now. 😅

    Hello, I still have 4 colors for video and photo recordings with the Panasonic Lumix S5II
    Unfortunately, Panasonic could not give me an answer, and I didn't find any answers in the manual either.
    1: Slow motion recording is only possible with MOV? can't you record slow motion with MP4?
    2: Is it possible to record with normal settings (without S&Q mode) with 100, 120, 180 FPS and slow down when editing slow motion?
    If you record on S&Q then you only have slow movement without sound, but can't you record normally with sound but at high FPS e.g. 100, 120 fps? (possible with other cameras like Sony!
    3: S5II has 5 different types of shutters, I read in the manual (399) which ones are more precise and accurate than the others? what is different?
    4: where can I find the picture account roll? That is, after the picture is taken, the picture appears on the display without pressing any button for 2 (or more) seconds to check.
    Thank you very much

Colours were supereb and the ergonomics were great, also a shame they dropped the S1 line for the S5 as the higher spec with phase detect would have been great. I also lost a fortune when trying to sell it and they were very hard to sell as well, very poor market for lumix second hand and trade in prices were dreadful but im tempted again with the S5ll ...or maybe i should just stay put and wait for Fuji to fix its again inconsistent AF.

    I bought the s5 II and I was super excited about the new autofocus. For video, it's on par with the greatest ones. But I think I use 50/50 photo and video and I can tell you why I returned the camera.
    The system is not snappy at all. First, you have to enable the screen and viewfinder to preview the shutter, aperture and iso. Otherwise, the vf and the monitor behave like an old SLR and don't show you the preview of the SS/A/ISO config. When you activate the live view (I forgot the specific name of the function on Panasonic cameras) and you are in SS less than 1/25 in photo mode, the system gets really laggy. Feels like the processor is weak and doesn't handle the camera operation well.
    I tried to live with the slow system but I ended up returning the camera.
    I was excited about the s5 II and think it has great potential. But seems like Panasonic is aiming all their efforts at video only and the photography side of this camera is really weak, compared to sony and canons.
    I must say that I have an R5 and an RF 24 70 and I'm really bothered by Canon's attitude regarding 3rd party lenses. I'm not a professional and every day I feel like an idiot for having such an expensive kit just for my hobby. I love the R5 and I think it's a great camera to this day. 8k all-I, 45mp. What a camera. But the 1.8 glass is expensive and inferior to their competitors.
    The S5 II and a Sigma 28-70 would be a nice cost/benefit for my use. But I'll have to stick to my stupidly expensive and huge Canon system or sell everything and go for a Sony a7IV or even an A7C
    Maybe in the future, if Panasonic gets more focused on photography as well, I might come back.
    Thanks for the video. I've subscribed to your channel :)

      Thank you for watching Bruno! I noticed the same thing regarding exposure compensation in photo as well as the laggy, non responsive screen at lower shutter speeds. The A7IV could be a good move, amazing lens options and excellent image quality. I just personally love the feel and ergonomics of the Canon. I really appreciate you subscribing.

      @@JamesReader I had an a7IV already and there's one thing only that I don't like. When you're with the screen flipped and you want to bring the camera quickly to your eyes, the a7IV doesn't change automatically to the VF. You have to close the flippy screen so the sensor can work. Not sure as well if that was a human error on my side but that silly thing made me give up on the Sony, but I'm reconsidering.
