Science shows 3000K has too much blue wavelength in the spectrum-- increasing risks for human health, ecosystems and environment. But just like the tobacco and lead industry successfully stalled the truth and regulation about the risks, lighting idustry is doing the same. People, do your homework, and speak up. I've seen the brand new patented Lumican 2200K LED streetlight that is outstanding quality without the health risks, and I heard they also have an amber LED, too that is outstanding. The point is that it is possible to light responsibly-- without risks to humans, envirnonment and ecosystems. Too many cities jumped in too soon-- before the LED technology was developed enough, and the citizens are paying the consequences while the lighting industry rakes in the profits. I would LOVE to see a TOTAL RECALL of all the harmful LED streetlights installed-- on the lighting industry's dime.

@Chronic Blast the comment is talking about an issue called "blue light" that our phones and electronics give off. As far as I know the name is not only referencing a blue tone, but the specific spectrum/intensity of light that's been shown to cause disruptions in people.

@Larry Anims - Devil God - Animations while I strongly advise against shooting lights in neighborhoods they need to install dimmer and more yellowish lighting with shields. That way the light points downwards and isn't too bright and is warm (blue light is harmful at night) which can easily be done with the newer LED's! You can still have energy efficiency without disrupting people's sleep & harming animal's with horrible light pollution.

@larryisnothingee Dimmer and more orange yellow lights! This can be done with LED's. They don't have to be so dim like the old incandescent street lamps but most of these new LED's are much too bright and emit too much blue light! Blue light is harmful to animals and especially insects at night, while also disrupting many Human's sleep as well!

hmm. Light Pollution, a very real thing, seems to have been forgotten. the reason we used orange/amber street lights is because at one time in human history, we wanted to reduce the pollution we put out on this planet, that included Light Pollution, Light Pollution disrupts growing cycles and hampers ground based observatories.

Looks like the street lights we’ve got in San Leandro, CA. They are “only” 3000K indeed but aren’t shielded in any way, thus appearing very bright. It puzzles me that the communities are still installing those while more eye - and environment - friendly options are available now. The City of Berkeley, CA, for example, started transitioning toward dimmer lights this year. The harsh LED lights should be fully recalled and banned from this planet!

    • @jKLa

It's an ideology now want things too bright at night now that everything is ideological! Politics on both sides and across the spectrum is partly to blame. Being "Progressive" increasingly means technologically progressive and being ideologically "environmentally aware" without really valuing nature, among other similar contractions. Meanwhile many "Conservatives" are now not tradition valuing so much as they are instinctively against what they think is progressive, such as being environmentally concerned. And are all about conformity. This reactivity has now been mirrored by many "progressives" and "liberals" (often highly illiberal in reality). It is all so stupid! People across the political spectrum want everything lit up "for safety" -and also just to conform. Unfortunately, people's environmental conserns (for those who have them) are often abstract in nature but they increasingly don't actually value what is natural or nature itself! More big trees being cut down in many older neighborhoods and many newer neighborhoods being largely treeless is another example of this awful trend.

An HPS(High Pressure Sodium) streetlight has a color temperature (Kelvin/CCT (Correlated Color Temperature)) of about 2000K - 2200K, which is healthier for the Circadian Rhythms of People AND Wildlife. Another aspect is the Intensity of the light (Lumens Flux and/or Candela (Candle Power))..., LEDs come in every color under the rainbow AND are dimmable..., So why not dim the lights to 50% output and SAVE even more money & use less electricity ?? If you believe that Bright Lights will keep you safe, then you are mistaken. Under that logic, there would be Zero crime during daylight hours & Gas Stations(which are amongst the most brightly lit places in town) would the Safest places on earth. Criminals have the same eye structure as law-abiding citizens..., Only active vigilance by Police, Neighbors & Business Owners prevent crime NOT ANY amount of lighting. Also, to those who say, well just use blackout/room darkening curtains & sleep masks..., You & I have that luxury but, wildlife doesn't. Another point, if people close their curtains because of bright lighting well, that equals less vigilance by neighbors and better opportunities for criminals since nobody's got their curtains open. Oh, and more use of A/C during warmer months instead of having the windows open at night so, that is a factor in more energy use. They must be able to make shields for the fixtures to avoid Light Trespass unto neighboring properties. Oh, and the "Industry Standard" of 4000K is set by the lighting industry alone and that will soon fall as more people are becoming aware of Light Pollution, ARTIFICIAL Blue Light Wavelengths at NIGHTTIME and a plethora of studies by many respected & established Universities, Chronobiologists, Doctors & Institutes throughout the world.

Done correctly, it would look like it’s still HPS. Even 2700K lights (I would use them only in some parking lots), if correctly installed and fully shielded, could look like they’re incandescent lights.

Then he sent another email today saying that now they cannot change the bulb or put a dimmer shade on it after they said they could yesterday. Liars. I may get an attorney. 3000K is a measure of color temperature, not brightness. Brightness is measured in lumens. Color temperature refers to how yellowish or blue the light is. Still, it's good they used 3000k lighting instead of 4000k; 4000K is way too bluish to be using as street lighting and may cause insomnia in people who live near the lights.

I moved from Denver back to Illinois in late 2021 after a disastrous stint there and all of the streetlights have long been replaced with LED and my mood took a severe nosedive. The streets now look like I've inadvertently wandered into a top-secret military facility. It is so depressing and unpleasant going out for walks at night with these LED streetlights and in all honesty, I think it's worth trading away 'efficiency' and restoring the old streetlights. High-Pressure-Sodium lights are far safer than the LED lights replacing them. What the hell are engineers doing?! Do they yet understand that people HATE these lights and the ugliness they create?
When I do go for major walks, I drive to neighborhoods where the old HPS lights are still dominant and the difference in my mood is almost night and day, even taking into account personal circumstances. The HPS lights create a warm and pleasant mood and the lights generally do not assault my eyes even if I stare into them, very similar to the sun just after sunrise and right before sunset. I GET the criticisms of high pressure sodium lights especially with mercury in them but in terms of 'saving energy', do we really need to turn our urban nightscapes into such an ugly, and unwelcoming place?
These 'newer' lights generate painful glare that assaults my eyes, even though I'm only 40 as of this writing but I generally fear for the safety and well-being of older drivers who otherwise have few other age-related vision problems. The harsh white glare of these LED lights can damage the retina and it suppressed the production of melatonin, the substance that promotes natural sleepiness at night. I actually got rid of these 4000K lights from my house and put in 3000K or less lights and the difference in my mood has been profound. Not only are these white LED lights ugly but they create sharp contrasts between the lit and unlit areas creating areas of brightly lit and pitch-dark areas and the eyes cannot adjust well enough at a fast enough speed to accomodate the contrasts making it impossible to see in dark areas. I almost twisted my ankle on an irregular sidewalk surface (pothole) as I was trying to look away from a blindingly bright LED streetlight. I don't even want to know what kind of injuries others have sufferend from similar circumstances.
This is also the same lighting that is emitted in far smaller doses from computer and iphone screens and it's what doctors tell us to avoid exposing ourselves to at least an hour before bed. However, even newer computers and iphones now have the option of changing the 'color temperature' to a warmer scheme. Yet we install 4000K streetlights on our streets, the very same light we're supposed to avoid at bedtime. I no longer sit out on my front porch since a bright LED streetlight glares in front of me. I used to do this many times in years past but no more. Once it gets dark, I'm inside or somewhere else.
These current 'white' LED streetlights are extremely ugly, unwelcoming, dangerous (glare assaulting the eyes), poorly made (cheap and not built to last) and badly designed and have NO place on our urban streetscapes. These kinds of white lights are for windowless rooms in the interiors of commercial, office, and industrial buildings. This kind of light should NEVER be used in large amounts in outdoor landscapes. If anything, they need to be covered with special diffusing lenses to filter out the blue and green wavelengths so only the warmer colors can shine through and they must also be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes too. They should never be uncovered like the way they currently are. The ugliness of these lights may have a factor in creating more antisocial behavior, not only due to the ugliness of the lights but also the disruption of quality sleep in those whose windows are near these lights.
Mind you, I'm not some conspiracy-minded person who buys into the bullshit notion that these are weapons being used by some big-scary-evil-government. No. I just think these lights are a badly misused technology that is still poorly understood and that the obsession with 'saving money' and 'efficiency' is creating a situation that I could see become a costly and unnecessary urban fiasco that will have to be addressed and/or reversed or replaced with lighting that is far safer and healthier than the white LED lights right now or even revert back to high-pressure sodium lights.
If we must use LED, they should NEVER be higher than 2200K to 2700K or equivalent of between low-or-high-pressure-sodium lights and roughly candlelight and/or campfires. They also must be designed so the vast majority of the light is limited to roughly a 120 arc between 120 degrees (just beyond 90 degrees to the right of up) and 240 (just below 90 degrees to the left of up). Until Amber or Orange LED streetlights become affordable enough, then cities aorund the world need to keep their sodium lights for as long as possible and if a HPS light fails, just CHANGE THE DAMN LIGHT BULB Then!

they made the new lights hideous and painful to be under for a reason, it is literally about degrading human beings and taking away our dignity and quality of life. they know everybody unanimously prefers warmer colors, and they still force hideous white light on us.

Oh shut up with this 5G bullshit! These are not weapons. They are a far worse problem and are a byproduct of a loss of appreciation for aesthetics and gentleness in our society and our blind acceptance of 'harshness' for the sake of 'energy efficiency' which is one of the biggest scams ever promoted.

  • @Coolc1234
    @Coolc1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Being a street light enthusiasts I don’t think Xcel energy thought through this and was just rushing this project through. The reason why people are complaining that they are to bright is because the fixtures are 15000 Lumens 149W which is enough light to emit a major street and 8800 lumens 84W which is acceptable in neighborhood roads are place in as well placed in neighborhoods. So In conclusion Xcel energy was not pro efficient with this project, and instead of doing so they just threw out what ever they had an did not carefully improvise.
