I knew that Pantera were from the Arlington, Texas area. Little did I know when I moved in with my sister in Pantego, Texas, that Pantera recorded right down the street. Then one day I was shopping and Rita Haney, Dime's girlfriend was right behind me. A week later I'm playing disc golf at a park wearing a Dimebag shirt when another player said he lived around the corner. The love for Dimebag, Vinnie, and Pantera is strong around these parts.
Just listening to this on the way to a doctor's appointment when I find out vinnie Paul has died at 54. Very sad. One of the best if not best brothers duo in metal are now gone. I just wish phil and rex could have reconciled with vinnie prior to this. He was one of the hardest hitting drummers didnt have tons of flash but did not need it. His drumming was a huge part of the pantera sound. It was unthinkable they could ever reunite without dime. But now it will absolutely never happen. R.I.P. Vinnie Paul
The current Pantera should have been called "A Tribute To Pantera". I tried to watch one of the new shows but got disgusted. It should have never happened.
@@scottroberts7103 I never thought it was possible. Vinnie and Dime were Pantera...or at least 2/3 of the dynamic sound. Rex's bass while great is probably the most replaceable. The main thing is I don't think it's right without dime because of how special he is. The uniqueness of his overall style and sound is a huge part of Pantera . He is not a replaceable guy. Plus Im not a fan of zakk wylde. While I love dimes pinch harmonics, dive bombs and all of the other ph + wammy bar work, i can't say the same for zakk. He simply over uses ph. He generally doesn't accompany them with awesome wammy bar work and so it gets straight up annoying when you hear his trademark squeal every 3-5 seconds. Anyway I need to listen to more, but from the lil ive heard the shows it sounds like he is toning down his normal schtick and trying to emulate and do his best to respect Dime. I also think that without phil it wouldn't work either. Though thats the thing though, they still have the main vocalist and bassist. There are tons of bands that have 1 or sometimes zero original or well known members (phil is technically not the original vocalist, although he's the only one most ppl have ever know unless your a Terry Glaze era fan.) Regardless of how ppl feel about the reunion ppl are still attending to get to see the songs performed with phil n rex. Charlie is a pretty decent drummer but he doesn't really remind me of Vinnie. Maybe they should've billed it as a celebration of pantera. I know some want it to be called a tribute but you have basically 2 original members because phil is original to the Pantera everyone knows.

Had never heard this, this is a solid heavy metal album, even if it is not what Pantera ended up sounding like. Great vocals from Phil, and the guitar is incredible. Don't know about the rest of their 80s albums, but this one is pretty good, they should acknowledge its existence.
This is pure 80's Speed metal right here. This is an incredibly underrated record, it's not the greatest album ever but it's pretty damn good and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
@@jibicusmaximus4827 speed metal is bands like helloween iron angel and agent steel, thrash is heavier with typically less melodic harmonies and high pitch vocals...
It's funny to me how they had spent nearly 30 years trying to erase this album's existence from history, but I actually think it was their best album and wish they would have embraced it more.
No one is trying to erase it! Its normal for pantera to consider their first album to be CFH since its the first one writen by phil anselmo. This one was supposed to have their past singer but he left.
I don't understand all of the comments. This album is the logical progression into cowboys. Each album is a different than the one that came before it, but the biggest step in a change to their music probably took place between Vulgar display and Far Beyond Driven. The sound got much heavier, more use of d standard tuning. Most of cowboys is standard or close to it tuning, same with Vulgar. Their style obviously changed, but the falsetto vocals didn't go away in Cowboys; they went away completely by Vulgar though. I like all 9 of Pantera's albums they all have their own merits.
Its not Falsetto , its full out range . Falsetto is king diamond . Phil did in the Rob halford way , in a baritone resonance, and more rasp maybe at times And a bit Tate too .
@Default User on I am the night its not Standard tuning . They re in D . In Live in 1988 , there re stuff where there re not really in standard . But i think until CFH they still in E standard / flat something ..
After 25 years of listening to Pantera , I never heard this before. It felt as though the abbots were alive with new material .It gave me chills .We just met again .
yeah it's been a while for me. this is some straight up judas priest sounding shit. Vulgar display of power came our right when I started listening to metal as a kid, it was years before I heard their 80's stuff.
Crazy to think that people still believe Cowboys from Hell is Pantera’s first album. Clearly they go back farther than that. Real Pantera fans know what it is. Rip Dimebag! 🤘🤘
MonsieurBelding Not exactly. Some CFH songs were being written around the time of the making of this album, but the bulk of it was done after. You're right the overlap, though. You can definitely hear some.
Many people refused this album because they listening it while they keep the general image of Pantera in their minds, so to understand this album and interested in, you need to start it without traditional idea of the band, like your first experience with a new band that you never heard about them.
Nothing wrong with it, but it sounds too derivative of stuff that came before it...how many people say "this sounds like Priest"...which is pretty awesome, but also pretty not original. They got it done on Cowboys...then the MYTHIC Vulgar Display of Power...anyone that says this album (a nice, listenable, yet outdated record) is better than Vulger has a screw loose or is just trying to be avant-garde, to prove their metally. LOL...this album blows compared to VDOP
Ian Gautier Cowboys from Hell came out before Slaughter in the Vatican...the Exhorder album that featured chugging guitar riffs and SOME aspects of groove. Slayer had already done that. Exhorder didn’t go groove until 1992 honestly but by then Pantera had popularized the sound.
Listen to their first three albums back in the early/mid 80’s. Diamond D is the only guitar player I have ever heard make Eddie VH sound like a rookie, and I adore EVH..
@@river2352I believe Dimebag to be the 2nd created guitarist but nobody can make Eddie sound like a “rookie” get outta here with that. And Dimebag woulda humbly agreed with that… I guarantee Eddie coulda played in a thrash or death band..
On a second listen, every single element that characterised the "official" Pantera is contained within the realm of this album. Not all that's on here survived, but all that came later is here.
Interesting side note I haven't seen mentioned.......... "Down Below" is Pantera covering.....Pantera. It is a song from I Am The Night featuring Terrence Lee on vocals re-recorded here with Phil Anselmo as it was a heavier song and they wanted to showcase the bands new vocal approach with Phil.
Integrity101 down below’s a catchy thrash riff. My top 5 would probably be P*S*T*88, burn, down below, death trap, and over and out. In no particular order. Much prefer the thrashy Pantera stuff over some of the glam stuff on this album (hard ride, we’ll meet again). Fast and aggressive suits them a lot more.
Leads into CFH perfectly. Why they haven't remastered this is beyond me. All the early Pantera albums stand proud amongst their contemporaries. Some unbelievable Dimebag solos throughout.
Well, Cowboys from hell came out before grunge, death and thrash really crossed over to the mainstrean (one year before Nevermind and the Black Album), I would say it was more like they saw it coming and made adjustments accordingly.
I remember when they were just boys playing with guitars in high school❤❤❤❤❤ I miss him so much. We were friends for 20 years. I was a stripper and he was a heavy metal dude and we would smoke weed and hang out almost every weekend. I miss him so much
I know about the 80s era of Pantera until over 10 years ago. It's almost like this album is the precursor to Cowboys From Hell. This bridges the gap between 80s Pantera and 90s Pantera. That is why this album stands out to me. This album is so underrated.
I used to see these Guys at Joe's Garage in ft worth and at six flags old southern palace they always rocked everywhere they went!!! they will truely be missed. Always very friendly and talkative, Darrel was so down to earth guy!!! Master of the Guitar!!
Lots of MYTHS regarding early Pantera. 1) The band is NOT ashamed of this record. MYTH. 2) If this is Glam, than Judas Priest is a GLAM BAND 3) Yes Phil Anselmo is the singer (he's on the cover) 4) This album was written in 1986 before Phil joined (joined late 86. first concert January 1987) 5) Phil was in the band about a week or two when they asked him to quickly throw some vocals on so they could shop the album/demo to record labels and tour 6) Phil quickly wrote lyrics to 7 of the songs. 7) They played these songs well into 1990. 8) They were playing CFH material Live as early as 1988. 9) The 1st album PHILIP *WROTE* with the band is CFH. 10) They shopped Power Metal album/Demos to record companies throughout 1987 before finally releasing it on their own in 1988. FACT: The 1st Pantera album NOT to feature a performance by a TEENAGER is CFH in 1990. FACT: The 1st Metallica album NOT to feature a performance by a TEENAGER is RTL in 1984 11) Pantera played their first gig FEBRUARY of 1981. More than a full year before METALLICA. Dimebag was 14 12) Dimebag started writing Metal Magic at 14 years old 13) Metal Magic was *RELEASED* when Dime was 16 14) Projects In The Jungle was *RELEASED* when Dime was 17 15) I Am The Night was *RELEASED* when Dime was 18 16) Dave Mustaine is five (5) years older than Dimebag 17) Kirk Hammet is four (4) years older than Dimebag 18) James Hetfield is 5 years older than Phil Anselmo Comparing 1983 Pantera to 1983 Metallica is apples to oranges. Comparing Kill Em All to Power Metal makes much more sense. Dimebag wrote most CFH when he was 21 & 22. So when people joke about songs written 7 years earlier...…….it's simple math. Pantera considered CFH to be their debut because it *IS THEIR DEBUT writing music with New singer Phil Anselmo* AND it's their Major Label debut. Why on earth would Phil Anselmo wanna sing songs from a *previous singer* written before his brilliant guitar player was old enough to get a *drivers license, LOL????? Phil, like 99% of singers out there, wanted to sing songs *HE WROTE, PERIOD.* The band felt the same way. It's not more complicated than that.
I think this is a great album. It’s different enough to stand alone away from the Pantera we know now, but you can hear moments of what they were to become from Cowboys From Hell onwards.
All I know is you could tell they were gonna be something special. And how special were they. Greatest metal band to this day. No one has come close ,says it all.
I really like this album, love a lot of 80s metal. I'm not that familiar with Pantera, but I just can't stand the sound of their later work..it's like all life has been removed from the music, monotone sounding songs.. awful deafening production. Obviously you hear things in it I don't get

@@ferox965 Glam-METAL started (roughly) in 1982 (quite heavy and influenced by Judas Priest circa 1978-1982) and was eventually overshadowed by Pop-Hair Metal in the late '80s (think of Warrant, Winger, etc); some bands still played Glam-Metal by 1988-89, Pantera included; Celtic Frost's Cold Lake is another example of a Glam-Metal album released in the late '80s.

this album is gold. it's almost a tribute album to classic heavy metal sound. I hear just very talented young guys who trying to sound like their childhood heroes on this album. and it's awesome. afterwards, they quickly developed their sound and found their own style. If you want to create something original, you need to imitate others at the beginning. that's how it works.
How can it be a tribute? It's from the era of "classic" heavy metal.
@@skepticalbadgerTrue but classic metal was on its way out. By 89/90 metal was moving on to more extreme territory and this was right during that transitional period. This is sort of a sweet kiss goodbye to the classic era.

Because they started wearing cargo shorts and playing douche metal larping as tough guys and saying this kind of music is too effeminate
Absolutely their best album
I don't understand all of the comments. This album is the logical progression into cowboys. Each album is a different than the one that came before it, but the biggest step in a change to their music probably took place between Vulgar display and Far Beyond Driven. The sound got much heavier, more use of d standard tuning. Most of cowboys is standard or close to it tuning, same with Vulgar. Their style obviously changed, but the falsetto vocals didn't go away in Cowboys; they went away completely by Vulgar though. I like all 9 of Pantera's albums they all have their own merits.
Absolutely right!

Lots of MYTHS regarding early Pantera.
1) The band is NOT ashamed of this record. MYTH.
2) If this is Glam, than Judas Priest is a GLAM BAND
3) Yes Phil Anselmo is the singer (he's on the cover)
4) This album was written in 1986 before Phil joined (joined late 86. first concert January 1987)
5) Phil was in the band about a week or two when they asked him to quickly throw some vocals on so they could shop the album/demo to record labels and tour
6) Phil quickly wrote lyrics to 7 of the songs.
FACT: The 1st Metallica album NOT to feature a performance by a TEENAGER is RTL in 1984
11) Pantera played their first gig FEBRUARY of 1981. More than a full year before METALLICA. Dimebag was 14
12) Dimebag started writing Metal Magic at 14 years old
13) Metal Magic was *RELEASED* when Dime was 16
14) Projects In The Jungle was *RELEASED* when Dime was 17
15) I Am The Night was *RELEASED* when Dime was 18
16) Dave Mustaine is five (5) years older than Dimebag
17) Kirk Hammet is four (4) years older than Dimebag
18) James Hetfield is 5 years older than Phil Anselmo
Comparing 1983 Pantera to 1983 Metallica is apples to oranges.
Just shows how amazing the lads were.

All I know is you could tell they were gonna be something special. And how special were they. Greatest metal band to this day. No one has come close ,says it all.
a lot will sat not, but i have to agree with you...the Greatest!
My absolute favorite metal band of all time. Like you said, no one comes close
I really like this album, love a lot of 80s metal. I'm not that familiar with Pantera, but I just can't stand the sound of their later work..it's like all life has been removed from the music, monotone sounding songs.. awful deafening production. Obviously you hear things in it I don't get
Man I used to listen to this album over and over and that was when Dimebag was over at our house sometimes and life was just wild and crazy and I was about 20. Now here I am in 2022 and starting a new life listening to this old music that I still love and watching the sunrise. Cheers to New Beginnings. Goodbye mystery. Goodbye pain. Goodbye love. We'll meet again
Call me a hipster but this is legitimately my favorite album by them and the only one I even like. I don't like Glam, I don't like Groove so this hits a sweet spot and makes me appreciate a band I had already written off as not for me.
You're smokin meth
Definite hipster, but if you are legit with your call, enjoy!
But this is not glam, its second wave of british heavy metal so obviously is like judas priest copycat
@@dimifisher Pantera is an American band homie, it's not British heavy metal if it's not made in the UK. This is late stage Glam metal
@@dimifisher They aren't British and waaay too late for NWOBHM.
Still the heaviest Glam-Metal album of all time
Not a glam metal record at all. Much closer to Judas Priest...unless you consider Judas Priest glam metal.
@@ferox965 man I hear some Crue and some Ratt in this so I wouldn’t say “at all”
@@jjrj8568 just the mention of that damned POP ROCK ALBUM by arguably the greatest death/blackened thrash metal band ever, just boils the bile in my body
Some glam albums are heavier than some thrash bands
Now I understand where Phil got those high notes and screams from Cowboys from Hell as they started in this Heavy Metal Judas Priest esque sound before
In razor white ( prior to Pantera ) they were covering Priest tunes .
